DISTRICT 6380 GOVERNOR SECRETARY EDITOR John Kenny Judy Garver Keith Dawson Sandee Frederick 2009-2010 2202 Forest Glen 19 Braemar Blvd Executive Secretary Grangemouth, Scotland West Bloomfield, MI Chatham, ON Rotary Club of 48324 N7M 6G2 Chatham THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS WEDNESDAY Feb 10, 2010 DATE PUBLISHED Feb 11, 2010 As part of National Heritage Week Brenda Travis, formerly a school teacher in the Detroit area and now retired to the Dresden area with her husband, spoke to the Club on February being Black Heritage Month. She is the current President of the Black Historical Society of Kent and an active member of the Zonta and Reading Clubs and an active volunteer at the Wish Centre. She had on display a very large Underground Railway Quilt made upwards to 150 years ago to pay respect to those who escaped from slavery in the USA by using the railway links to Canada back then. She reminded us of many well-known names with Black Heritage starting with Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who was the second Black to receive a Doctorate from Harvard but still was not able to get a job. He is considered to be the Father of Black Heritage Month having gathered considerable history leading to the formal start of Black Heritage Month being declared in 1976 in the USA. She drew attention to the Hon. Jean Augustine - the first Black to elected to Parliament on Ottawa, Michelle Jean, the first Black to the Governor General of Canada, Martin Luther King Jr., Josiah Henson, Elijah McCoy who invented lubrication for a moving steam engine and Harriett Tubman who was responsible for 300 escapees to the Niagara area. Brenda was introduced by Moira Kerr and thanked by Peter Cook
