/ 6 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Marci B. Reed, CFRE, MPA mreed@aiaga.org AIA Georgia Presents 2012 Design Awards December 4, 2012 - The AIA Georgia 2012 Design Awards were announced at SCAD Saturday, December 1 in Atlanta, Georgia. Twelve entries were recognized from the more than 90 entries received earlier this year. The award submissions were juried in Chicago. Neil Dawson AIA was the AIA Georgia Design Awards Program Chair. The intent of the AIA Georgia Design Awards is to encourage excellence in architectural design, to make the public more aware of the potential of the man-made environment and to honor the architect, designer and owner of significant projects. This year, in an effort to further elevate excellence in design, AIA Georgia partnered with local allied organizations to focus attention on all aspects of the design profession and expanded our categories to include unbuilt, landscape and small projects. All submissions were reviewed by a common jury of distinguished guests - Andrew Metter FAIA, David Brininstool AIA and Peter Landon FAIA - connected to all facets of the design profession. Submissions were evaluated on creativity, design excellence, and for innovation beyond the current trends of form and image making. Each submission was judged on its own merits - not in competition with others. Awards are bestowed in three categories, Honor, Merit and Citation. Honor Award Winners Honor awards are granted to projects that exemplify excellence of architectural design of all levels of analysis and is reserved for those projects that stand out from group of otherwise meritorious projects. Puerto Rico Capital District Master Plan - Perkins+Will. The project is a historic opportunity to restore the grandeur of a national landmark. This Vision Plan guides the transformation of Puerto Rico's Capitol District by dramatically reorganizing and expanding public and open spaces, while balancing the demands of a congested tourist destination. The jury commented that "the clever resolution of competing geometries has resulted in a proposal which respects and honors the past, while recognizing a future which leverages existing conditions and infrastructure in responsible and creative ways."

/ 6 Benjamin E. Mays High School, Atlanta, GA - Perkins+Will. Benjamin E. Mays High School demonstrates how an aged, worn school building can be transformed into a modern learning facility that the community, teachers, and students can be proud of. Mays is an example of how adapting and renovating the existing school can be as effective as completely demolishing and building a new building. The facility's existing spaces before the renovation/expansion were extremely dark, disorienting, and uninviting. The jury noted that "the consistency and transparency of the interior detailing, including curtain wall, clerestories, and minimal structure, created a beautiful new light- infused, animated space. These architects were able to create a dramatic and pivotal new space through the careful and precise placement of this modest but powerful intervention." Merit Award Winners Merit awards recognize achievement in design and are awarded to projects that display a high standard of architectural quality and design. College of Coastal Georgia - Site Design, Brunswick, GA - Perkins+Will. A series of projects with the College of Coastal Georgia seeks to re-envision this campus as an expression of the institution's values. The design team was able to improve on plans of the past and reconfigure for future growth, giving an identity to the college by thoughtfully highlighting the unique character of the coastal landscape. This new campus landscape sets the stage for the quintessential college experience. Rather than a disconnected series of buildings, visitors now encounter a campus united by a series of green, lively, attractive, and functional spaces. D.M. Therrell High School, Atlanta, GA - Perkins+Will. D.M. Therrell High School has been redesigned to operate as three independent academies. The original structure of the school was inwardlooking and fortified with little natural daylight reaching classrooms or circulation spaces. As the organizing element for the facility, this heart of the campus makes possible an open and transparent architecture that changes the life of the school both functionally and experientially. This 180,000 squarefoot new construction/60,000 squarefoot renovation facility is targeting LEED

/ 6 Silver certification. What once was an internalized and inefficient building is now an academic campus designed for student success. Georgia Tech Carbon Neutral Energy Solutions Lab (CNES), Atlanta, GA - HDR Architecture. The CNES project has a clear mission: carbon neutral "netzero site energy use"; by optimizing passive energy technologies, reducing electricity loads, and maximizing the use of renewable energy. The design is intended to express its mission simply, directly and honestly; a "no frills" design. Through analysis of contemporary carbon neutral buildings, establishing a working definition of net zero site energy use, incorporating baseline energy- modeling and studying simple pre- industrial structures, the design team created a series of four alternative building concepts. These were evaluated through further energy- modeling to determine which options and which energy- savings features to pursue. The design of the site will expand the Institute's campus- wide initiative to move towards a more natural ecology and dramatically increase water conservation, efficiency and quality. Nancy Creek Guesthouse and Pool, Atlanta, GA - Philip Babb Architect. The Nancy Creek Guesthouse & Swimming Pool provide guest quarters and outdoor entertainment space to a mid- century modern home in Atlanta. Each element of the design was carefully positioned to enhance its relationship to the existing house and to the movement of the sun. The program called for a large swimming pool, a stone terrace for entertaining, a lawn for playing ball and a free standing 800 sf guest house with living space, kitchen, bathroom and guest room. The pool is located along the western edge to avoid morning shadows from the wooded site. The guesthouse, situated along the northern edge, provides a backdrop to the pool and terrace when viewed from the main house. Sliding glass panels & clerestory windows along the southern facade create an open pavilion aesthetic.

/ 6 Ocean Center, Daytona Beach, FL - tvsdesign. The Ocean Center expansion envelops a design language from the city's racing heritage and ocean lifestyle. Built in the 1980's, the existing Ocean Center included a 10,000 seat arena with a ballroom and meeting space. It was largely geared towards arena events with recurring local- interest exhibits, including some that, though loyal to the Daytona market, had grown in size beyond the existing facility. The facility now has dedicated, technically up- to- date exhibit space and the ability to conduct two separate events at once. Sweeping views of the Atlantic are offered from a series of second level balconies highlighted by pops of vibrant green. The expansion to the existing center was envisioned as a way to elevate Daytona's convention and business profile hand- in- hand with its well- known role as an entertainment and recreation destination. Petrochemical Research Institute, Beijing China - Perkins+ Will. Inspired by the image of the Chinese Dragon, the new Research Institute for PetroChina was designed to create a strong international image while uniting multiple research centers into a continuous composition of linked buildings. The institute is set in a sustainably designed environment and is dedicated to promoting research and innovation. The main entry building represents the "head of the dragon," which incorporates a main atrium featuring a sculptural glass element symbolizing the "eye of the dragon." Rising out from the PetroChina symbol on the floor, the "eye" ascends dramatically up through the building volume and houses the major vertical circulation, elevators and stairs. This signature element links all levels of the building and penetrates the roof plane to create a light oculus that connects the entry to the sky. Further illustrating the dragon concept, the main pedestrian concourse represents the "spine of the dragon" and creates a generous path for staff to move through the complex with continuous glass openings offering views of the gardens and the sky.

/ 6 Pin Point Heritage Museum, Savannah, GA - Lominack Kolman Smith Architects. The Pin Point Heritage Museum is nestled in the marsh on the former site of the A.S. Varn & Sons Oyster Factory. Established in 1926, the factory created 60 years of economic interdependence between the Varns and the Pin Point people. The historic factory buildings now house static and interactive exhibits to tell the story of Pin Point, its people and Gullah culture. The Owner's goal was to stimulate community pride through sharing its heritage. The oyster factory was sinking into the marsh; the other buildings were collapsing. Every artifact or remnant of the original buildings was saved and reused where possible, adding only what was necessary to create a place to tell the story of the Pin Point community and families. While the community assisted in determining what would happen inside of the buildings, history and ingenuity assisted the design team with restoring the fabric of the historic buildings and site. Preservation work included: roof replacement/preservation, removal of failing paint, CMU repair, window and door restoration, salvage and reuse of many original items, and reversal of non- sympathetic changes. The work followed the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation. Tribute Lofts, Atlanta GA - Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein Architects PC. Tribute Lofts fills a tight 1.55-acre slice of land with a loft condominium complex that includes a street fronting retail base. The project, which has public frontages at all four of its sides, is scaled to fit within its context and is a welcome addition to the urban landscape. The project consists of three separate volumes organized around a raised parking base and landscaped courtyard. A concrete structure was chosen for the building in order to allow the greater heights and to provide lasting durability. In keeping with the overall minimalist aesthetic, the unit interiors have exposed concrete ceilings and walls, which are a direct result of the "tunnel" concrete forming system used to construct the building. Tribute Lofts is a modern sculptural building that varies in height to respectfully address each of the 4 unique public frontages while providing 147 minimalist lofts that maximize the skyline views for each resident. Citation Award Winners The citation award is given at the jury's discretion for project of notable accomplishment.

/ 6 Navy Federal Credit Union Brian L. McDonnell Center Building IV, Pensacola, FL - ASD, Inc. This is the fourth LEED Gold building for the Navy Federal multi- building campus. Located on a 65-acre site in Pensacola, Florida, the primary goal of this project was to provide an employee focused corporate campus that is Simple, Flexible, Open, Economical, Sustainable (LEED Gold), and inspired to meet NFCU's customers and employees' needs for the foreseeable future. The project utilized an integrated design approach in which the entire design team and client team worked together from the onset. This was highly successful in meeting the cost, schedule, energy efficiency and occupant requirements set for the building. Southside Apartments, Chattanooga, TN - Philip Babb Architect. Located in Chattanooga's Southside Art District, this project creatively assembles nine light- filled apartments on a small corner property. Interlocking L- shaped one bedroom apartments on two levels and two- bedroom duplex apartments on the second floor form three private courtyards that provide each apartment with ample sunlight and dual access from the street and covered parking. This residential development seeks to achieve the optimum number of spacious, light- filled apartments on a very limited site.
