Cyprus to establish Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts The cabinet has approved a bill proposing the establishment of a Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts, meaning the country will now be able to participate in important international scientific and cultural events. Cyprus will soon have its own Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts that will contribute to the emergence of excellence, spiritual progress and achievements of our country, said minister of education and culture Kostas Kadis. The ministry said the procedure for establishing the academy was presented at an official ceremony last November at the presidential palace in the presence of its founding committee. Cyprus was one of the few European countries that until now has not had such an academy. The founding committee of the academy includes Nobel Prize Winner Sir Christophoros Pissarides physicist Loucas Christophorou, chemist Kyriacos Nicolaou and archaeologist VaSsos Karageorgis. The committee has voluntarily undertaken the preparation of an in-depth study on the academy s mission and activities, form and status and the resources required. The academy will be modelled on other European and international academies. Its objectives include the international promotion of the work of Cypriot scientists, the promotion of excellence, facilitating cooperation between Cyprus leading intellects, supporting education, giving the state scientific advice and strengthening cooperation between local industry, universities and research centres. The academy will also promote the development of research and innovation in Cyprus, the institutionalisation of awards, the representation of Cyprus in international scientific forums, the publication of a scientific journal and the publication of announcements and research. The bill approved by the cabinet will be submitted to the House as soon as possible. Cyprus and Israeli plan their largest-ever military exercise The largest land-based exercise between the National Guard and the Israeli special forces will take place in the coming days in several areas of the Troodos mountains. The exercise, part of the defence cooperation that has developed in recent years between the two countries, will mainly focus on scenarios for occupying and liberating villages and survival strategies.
The presence of Israeli commandos is expected to be impressive, as this is the first time such a large number of Israeli soldiers will attend a military exercise in Cyprus. Advisor to the defence minister, Maro Theodotou, was unwilling to confirm any details of the joint military exercise. This week s exercises follow a three-day joint military exercise between Cyprus and Israel which took place between March 20 22, as part of the agreement for military co-operation between the two countries. The Onisilos-Gideon exercise was held inside the Nicosia flight information region and also incorporated a large section of territory. A large number of National Guard personnel took part as well as numerous Israeli air force aircraft, which tested Cypriot air defences. Onisilos-Gideon was the biggest since 2014 when the two countries agreed to hold joint exercises. New Paphos-Polis road finally approved The Cyprus government has approved plans for the creation of the long-awaited Paphos-Polis dual road while approving works to improve the existing road. According to the plans, the road will be have two lanes with a provision to expand into a carriageway way at a later stage. The 60 million project (excluding expropriations), was presented to the House Communications Committee on Friday by Finance Minister Harris Georgiades and Communications Marios Demetriades. According to the project timetable, tenders will be called for at the beginning of 2018 with the aim of the project to start towards the end of the same year. The road will pass along Ayia Marinouda, just 7km east of Paphos, and will connect the village of Stroumbi with the Limassol-Paphos motorway. In other words, motorists wanting to head to Polis will no longer need to cut through Paphos but will instead turn off just before the town and head north toward the village of Stroumbi to then connect to the road all the way to Polis. Apart from the interchange on the Limassol-Paphos motorway, the new road to Polis will also feature two tunnels 730m and 290m long respectively, five bridges, two overpasses and five underground crossings. The plans have been approved by the cabinet. The budget for 2018 makes provision for 6m for the project which is the down payment to the contractor, said Georgiades adding that the amount excludes the amount for expropriations. It was also revealed that the first phase of the Limassol-Saita road as well as the Nicosia perimeter road were expected to start in 2018. We hope you enjoyed reading this Newsletter!
