He apparently suffered from some physical affliction, as he was referred to as a "cripple" in the 1851 Census, whether from birth or from injury is not known. He became a tailor, and at his sons' birth in 1863, was called a "MasterTailor". He was born in Upholland near Wigan, moved with his family to Chorley, and finally moved his own family to Little Bolton about 1862 prior to the birth of son Henry. Henry died sometime between 1871 and1881. In the 1881 Census his wife Elizabeth is found in the Census as a widow living in Bolton. Henry;s first wife was Alice Farnworth, who he married in 1838 in Chorley. Alice must have died shortly after the birth of their first son, John, in 1842. I believe this is our Henry but the age is recorded incorrectly. There is no perfect death record for Henry otherwise and according to the 1871 Census, the only one of the correct age and place recorded. Notes for Elizabeth Gillibrand It is likely that she was born Elizabeth Gillibrand, who is recorded as being born on March 17, 1822 in Chorley, daughter of John and Ann Gillibrand. There were however, two Elizabeth Gillibrands born to John and Ann Gillibrand in the same year, in Chorley. Research has indicated that this Elizabeth was the daughter of John Gillibrand and Ann Yates. The other Elizabeth was the daughter of John Gillibrand and Ann Edmundson. The family story is that Elizabeth was looking after the 3 daughters of Henry Martindale, her son, when Mary Alice, Henry's wife, took them and immigrated to Wyoming, USA, apparently without the knowledge of Henry or Elizabeth.
I did not find Elizabeth in the 1841 Census, although I believe a Betty Gillibrand, single, age 20 and a weaver is most likely our Elizabeth.
