Pappas: Redesigned Property Tax Bill is Easier to Read Owners of homes and other real property are receiving a property tax bill with bigger print that is easier to read on a bigger page that gives the owner more key information, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today. Pappas office mailed bills in the first week of July for the 2nd Installment of tax year 2012 on more than 1.7 million parcels of property across Cook County. The due date is August 1. Pappas office increased the physical size of the bill from 8 ½ by 11 inches to 8 ½ by 14 inches to make it easier to review all the information on the bill, and used larger type to better show the Taxing District Breakdown listing the governmental bodies which tax a home, business or land and their share of the bill. The new bill also has a revised Tax Calculator that shows how the bill was calculated and exemptions applied, and provides an Important Messages box giving information specific to that Property Index Number, such as: Tax payments to be made by mortgage company escrows. Prior-year tax delinquencies. Current-year refunds due. Last payment received. Tax abatements. Tax Increment Financing Districts. Making the numbers more legible on a larger page gives taxpayers a clearer and deeper look at what goes into their bill, Pappas said. Pappas reminded owners that payments can be made from savings and banking accounts at cookcountytrea surer.com, at more than 400 Chase Bank locations across Chicagoland and at more than 200 participating community banks. Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. George Eliot Bipartisan American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act Would Strengthen Middle Class U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) introduced today H.R. 2447, the American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act of 2013, a bill that would bring together the private and public sectors to develop recommendations to revitalize American manufacturing and create good-paying, middle-class jobs here at home. U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL-16) is the lead Republican cosponsor. American companies and their workers are operating at a severe disadvantage as they face foreign competitors who benefit from coordinated, strategic government policies that benefit manufacturing, Rep. Lipinski said. We need to recognize this reality and bring the public and private sectors together to develop a national manufacturing strategy that specifies recommendations for the optimal tax, trade, research, regulatory, and innovation policies that will enable American manufacturing to thrive. Manufacturing is critical for national security, an essential source of good-paying jobs for the middle class, and drives high-tech innovation. Manufacturing is vital to our economic and national security, and it is critical that we do all we can to promote American competitiveness in the global economy, Rep. Kinzinger said. I m proud to work with Congressman Lipinski to put forward bipartisan legislation that focuses our attention on the challenges facing American manufacturers. America has a long and proud manufacturing history. However, since the 1970s the number of manufacturing jobs has been shrinking, from 20 million in 1979 to fewer than 12 million today. The recent recession hit workers in manufacturing especially hard. The hemorrhaging of manufacturing jobs has contributed to the stagnation of middle-class wages since 2000, the median household income, after it s been adjusted for inflation, has fallen by $4,787. A pillar of the Make It In America jobs plan in the House, the American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act will require the National Science and Technology Council s Committee on Technology to lead other agencies and stakeholders in developing a national manufacturing competitiveness strategy every four years. The strategy would aim to advance policies that streamline government regulations and assist with the transfer of research and development into new products and jobs to grow the country s manufacturing base. Previous version of the bill have overwhelmingly passed the House with strong bipartisan support. We commend Congressmen Lipinski and Kinzinger for their authorship of the American Manufacturing Competitiveness Act of 2013, said Scott Paul, President of the Alliance for American Manufacturing. Our nation s manufacturers and their workers stand poised for a manufacturing resurgence, but Washington must do its part by implementing a strategy that actively responds to the challenges of the 21st Century. Don t Let Your Feet Ruin Your Vacation As millions of Americans hit the beach this summer, the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons offers these foot safety tips: Wear shoes to protect your feet from puncture wounds and cuts. Sea shells, broken glass and other sharp objects when stepped on can ruin your day at the beach. Avoid the water if your skin gets cut bacteria in oceans and lakes can cause infection. If you do suffer from a puncture wound, have it treated by a foot and ankle surgeon within 24 hours to avoid complications. Feet get sunburned, too. Rare but deadly skin cancers, such as melanoma, can occur on the foot. Prevent skin cancer on your feet by lathering up with sunscreen. Don t forget to apply to both the tops and bottoms of your feet! Wear shoes to protect your soles from getting burned as you walk on blistering-hot sand, sidewalks and pavement. Take extra precaution if you have diabetes. Be careful with your footing while playing beach sports such as frisbee or volleyball walking, jogging and playing sports on soft, uneven surfaces frequently leads to arch pain, heel pain, ankle sprains and other injuries. It s best to wear supportive shoes while playing beach sports. If injuries occur, use rest, ice, compression and elevation to ease pain and swelling. Any injury that does not resolve within a few days should be examined by a foot and ankle surgeon. Remember jellyfish stings can still occur even if it s washed up on the beach. Remove any tentacles that may stick to the foot or ankle, and protect your hands. Vinegar, meat tenderizer or baking soda reduce pain and swelling. Most jellyfish stings heal within days, but if they don t, see a doctor. Diabetes Risks: People who have diabetes face serious foot safety risks at the beach. The disease causes poor blood circulation and numbness in the feet. A person with diabetes may not feel pain from a cut, puncture wound or burn. Any type of skin break on a diabetic foot has the potential to get infected and ulcerate if it isn t noticed right away. People with diabetes should always wear shoes to the beach and remove them regularly to check for foreign objects like sand and shells that can cause sores, ulcers and infections. For more information on foot and ankle health, visit the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeon s patient education page at FootHealthFacts.org. Jury Duty Scam Due to the extreme penalties behind missing jury duty, scammers are preying on victims fear of legal action by pretending to be jury duty coordinators questioning consumers about their recent jury duty summons. This scam dates back to 2005, is circulating again with multiple states being hit including Illinois. Victims are being confused by scammers who request a Social Security number and date of birth to "verify" their information. With this information, scammers are armed for identity theft, tax fraud, hacking into bank accounts or other illegal purposes. Steps to avoid falling for this jury duty phone scam: 1. Understand that jury duty is always arranged by mailed letters, not phone calls. If consumers are expecting a jury summons, they are advised to hang up on the caller and get information directly from their local courthouse s or the state attorney general s website. Visiting www.uscourts.gov, consumers can learn about legitimate juror protocol or recent jury summons. 2. An official government representative will never be rude, bully people or make threats. Victims who are being harassed over the phone are advised to contact their local law enforcement to report the issue. 3. Never give private personal information, such as Social Security number, over the phone. A real official or court representative will not call to request this information. 4. Never give money, either in the form of a credit card number or wire transfer, to an unsolicited caller. In other variations of this jury duty scam, the caller requests money to pay various fees. 5. If in doubt, get the caller's information, do independent fact-checking and call back. Ask for the caller s name, phone number or extension and their manager's contact information. Then look them up on the internet or by calling the local county courthouse. If the caller does turn out to be a real government representative, consumers then can call them back. THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE John Smith Named DLS Girls Head Basketball Coach De La Salle Institute proudly announces that John Smith, a member of the Institute s Class of 1994, has been named the new girls varsity head basketball coach. Everyone at De La Salle is very pleased that John has chosen to accept this opportunity, De La Salle athletic director Tom White said. John is an excellent coach with a great knowledge, understanding and passion for the game. He also relates very well to our student-athletes and we felt that was a very important characteristic in building a successful program. Smith has spent the last seven seasons as the head coach of the sophomore boys basketball team at De La Salle. Under Smith s tutelage, the Meteors were Chicago Catholic League champions in four of the seven seasons, going undefeated in the 2009-10 campaign. Prior to his seven seasons as the sophomore coach, Smith spent three seasons as De La Salle s freshman boys basketball coach. Smith led the Meteors to a pair of CCL championships during his tenure with the freshman program. As a student at De La Salle, Smith, was a member of the basketball and football teams. Additionally, Smith s daughter, JaVonna, graduated from De La Salle in 2012 and is one of the top players in Meteor girls basketball history. I m definitely excited to have the opportunity to take over the girls basketball program, John Smith said. I want to get the program going in the right direction and win a state title here. De La Salle s girls varsity basketball team was 14-10 last season. De La Salle congratulates Smith on his appointment & wishes him every future success. Metropolitan Water Reclamation Pres. Kathleen Therese Meany, of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago would like to take this opportunity to inform all Cook County Citizens how the MWRD is out to help and assist them when it comes to storm flooding. Meany stated we monitor the weather and lower the Chicago Area Waterway System to provide maximum capacity for storm water in the area waterways, tunnels and reservoir system. In addition, we operate seven plants throughout the region. These plants take in a combined flow of over 3 billion gallons a day. During rain events, the MWRD maximizes flow to the plants to ensure we are moving the maximum amount of water through the system. When the Chicago area waterway levels are higher than Lake Michigan and predetermined elevations are reached, the MWRD opens control structures to move as much water as possible - out of the system. This provides protection from overbank flooding as well as more capacity for storm water. At this time, no gates have been opened to release water to Lake Michigan. There has been minimal rain to the south side of the county but over 3.5 inches has fallen across the north side of Chicago and northern part of Cook County. Tunnels that comprise the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) system are at the following levels: the Mainstream Tunnel has reached 92% capacity, the Des Plaines Tunnel has reached 60% capacity and the Calumet Tunnel is at 4%. The tunnel system is 109 miles and holds 2.7 billion gallons of water. Meany added we encourage the public to minimize their use of water in their homes to reduce the amount of water flowing into the sewer system during extraordinary rain events such as what is occurring. This will provide maximum capacity for combined storm water flows. We are here to serve you 24 hours a day. Congratulations On Your Graduation From DePaul University!
