The historical heart of Barcelona s Ciutat Vella ( Old City ) is still pumping. The winding medieval streets of one of its most dynamic districts, La Ribera, buzz with activity as new businesses and new residents add fresh colors to the mosaic of modern life. APiece of History Around the cafés, boutiques and restaurants, the ancient past of the area can still be seen. La Ribera is Catalan for The Shore, because it marked the seaward limit of the city in the 13th-15th centuries. Wealthy merchants and traders made their homes here, building streets and properties that remain full of character and identity. But locals know the area where Portal Nou is located by a different name: El Born. Although El Born has come to refer to the whole of the administrative district, the real Born is centered around the magnificent former public market of the same name. This soaring iron structure, the largest covered square in Europe, no longer houses a market but a vibrant cultural center, with the archaeological ruins of the old Ribera visible underfoot through glass. Why El Born? In Catalan, it means a place where tournaments are held - another clue to the area s medieval origins. It sits next to the great green space of Ciutadella park. This former fortress is now a favourite spot for families, who soak up the sun on the ornamental lawns or row across the lake. One of the few surviving buildings of the old citadel is now home to the Catalan Parliament. Dotted around the park are architectural jewels including the moderniste Zoology museum and a fountain by a young Antoni Gaudí. - 9 -
A Gateway to Your Chosen Lifestyle Portal Nou means New Gateway and this street opens onto a world of experiences. An Urban Oasis... Walk to one end and you ll arrive at the broad, elegant and pedestrianized promenade of Passeig de Lluis Companys. Here, between the lawns and palm trees, you ll find everyone from skateboarders to senior citizens enjoying the relaxed atmosphere. If it s a weekend, you might discover one of the wine fairs, gourmet food markets and cultural events that take place here. Look left and you ll see the red brick Arc de Triomf monument, built to commemorate Barcelona s artistic, economic and scientific progress for the 1888 Universal Exhibition. Look right and you ll see the gates to Ciutadella, the biggest park in central Barcelona. Beyond lie the beach and the sea. - 11 -
Just One Step From the Center Walk back home and to the other end of Portal Nou, however, and you have the best of the old city on your doorstep. A labyrinth of streets will reveal countless secrets as you explore: narrow alleyways and sun-dappled squares; a 10thcentury monastery and a brand new boutique; the Picasso museum and a chocolate museum; and at every turn, some of the best tapas bars and restaurants in town. Want to go even further? The property is close to the Arc de Triomf Metro and rail station, giving you fast, direct links to the rest of the city and trains that will transport you deep into the Penedes wine region or northwards up the beautiful Catalan coast. The lifestyle you choose is within your reach. - 12 - - 13 -
The Opportunity The Born s combination of old elegance and new energy has made it one of the most desirable destinations for discerning Barcelona property buyers. But hidden treasures still remain. Away from the busy cafés and galleries there is another Born. These streets, just minutes away, are quieter and more residential. With no passing tourist traffic driving commercial speculation they continue to evolve organically at a sustainable pace. They are filled with homes, not holidaymakers, and the quality of life they offer is hard to find elsewhere. Portal Nou is a ready-to-develop property in just such a location. Norvet s restoration integrates the best of the old with the best of the new. It respects the elegance and architectural features of the historical building and adds space, light and modern facilities, including an elevator. Norvet is developing the front facade in partnership with Barcelona s Patrimony Society to ensure that the upper floors blend harmoniously with the fully renovated original. This 19th century building will be transformed by a team of architects, interior designers and craftsmen into three luxury apartments featuring smart-home technology. - 14 - - 15 -
