THE BIRCHES & CHESTNUT HOUSE COPTHORNE WEST SUSSEX BY ASPREY HOMES
The Birches & Chestnut House are two detached family homes standing within extensive southerly facing gardens and situated in the Sussex village of Copthorne.
Copthorne is a village in the Mid Sussex District of West Sussex lying on the borders of West Sussex and Surrey. It gets its name from the Old English word coppede porn which means capped or pollarded thorn tree. It is rumoured that Copthorne Common was a haunt for smugglers from the south coast who stashed their goods in the woods, conscious that it was easy to step over the county border and escape any pursuing constabulary. At the height of the Napoleonic war, the isolated waste of the common was designated as a hiding place for the families of the Sussex gentry in the event of an invasion and it was that remoteness which attracted to Copthorne a few years later the sport of prizefighting. A Copthorner is traditionally known as a Yellowbelly and there are a number of stories told as to why this might be. One theory behind the name is that smugglers had to crawl through the mud to avoid detection and thus acquiring muddy yellow bellies. But the most likely reason is probably tied to the traditional local trade of charcoal burning, where some of those working stripped to the waist found their skin turned yellow with the smoke. The village of Copthorne offers a range of local shops including a post office, a Costa Coffee and three public houses all serving food and beverages. The Cherry Tree public house once served as the local library and is over 400 years old. For a larger selection of retail outlets East Grinstead which is approximately 4 miles to the south east offers a Waitrose, Sainsburys, Boots and WH Smiths to name but a few and has a Farmers Market every Thursday from 9.00am- 2.00pm selling a wide range of fresh produce. Copthorne has a wide selection of leisure activities for all ages. Copthorne Football Club has four adult teams and Copthorne Youth Football Club runs teams for children under 6 through to under 17. For the golf enthusiast Copthorne Golf Club is a private club with a challenging heathland and woodland 18 hole course which also welcomes visitors and society golf. For cricket lovers, Copthorne Cricket Club welcomes players of all abilities whether they want to play regularly or just fancy an occasional game. For a larger range of sports facilities including a gym, badminton courts, trampolining, indoor bowls, and much more, K2 Leisure Centre in Crawley with its Olympic size swimming pool has something for everyone. The racing fraternity are well catered for with Lingfield Park racecourse a short distance away. For budding actors, Copthorne has its very own theatre group called the Copthorne Players with around 70 members of all ages. Just over a mile away towards Felbridge is Hedgecourt Lake a designated site of special scientific interest, 12 acres of which is a nature reserve accessible to the public and is managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust. The 43 acre lake is controlled by East Grinstead Angling Society and contains a large stock of good size bream, roach, tench, pike, perch and eels. Peter Bunny Nursery looks after children from 4 months to school age and is located at The Warren in West Park Road in Copthorne. Fairway Infant School situated in the Fairway in Copthorne caters for children from Reception Class through to Year 2 and Copthorne Primary School caters for children from the age of 3 to 11 years. Copthorne Preparatory School which is an independent school caters for children from the age of 2 to 13 years. For secondary education Imberhorne School in East Grinstead is a co-educational school for pupils aged 11 to 18 years and has an outstanding Ofsted report. For further education the University of Sussex in Brighton offers under-graduate, masters and PHD courses.
Steeped in history,it is rumoured that Copthorne Common was a haunt for smugglers from the south coast who stashed their goods in the woods, conscious that it was easy to step over the county border and escape any pursuing constabulary.
