He was the youngest of six children of Ernestine Knox-King. Through his inspiring mother, Donald knew as a child that he wanted to be an architect and to make a difference in the lives of those whom prosperity had left behind. Between 1968 and 1984, Donald served on the staffs of four community design centers. He has taught drafting skills to Detroit inner-city youth and, in the late 1960 s, helped the still smoldering Watts community to come together and begin planning for a brighter future. His practice in Seattle serves African-American, Latino/Latina-American and Asian-Pacific American groups as well as the majority population on a variety of project types. Donald is supportive of responsive design and how it empowers clients and community. He envisions himself as a facilitator/interpreter of a collaborative design approach. He observes, asks questions and pays close attention to the answers. He encourages participatory design processes resulting in a body of work that resonates with the cultural identity and enhanced dignity of the end users. As former President and CEO of DKA Architecture, Donald King has over 40 years of experience in the planning and design of human service facilities, schools and affordable housing. He led DKA in the completion of over 400 successful projects. His writings on planning, design and architectural practice, as well as articles on DKA, have been published in numerous books and periodicals. Donald King was elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 2000. He is one of approximately 2,200 members of the prestigious College of Fellows and one of approximately 100 living African American Fellows. He and his former firm, DKA Architecture, are the recipients of several awards for practice, business success and design. In 2015, Donald King was awarded the AIA Seattle Medal of Honor. A sampling of Mimar Studio and DKA Architecture projects follows.
