The seminar will highlight the use of latest technologies for both reclamation and tunneling. About the Speakers Speaker 1 Tony O Brien Tony O Brien is the Global Practice Leader for Geotechnics in Mott MacDonald, and is a Visiting Professor at Southampton University,UK. Tony has over 30 years international experience on Transportation, Energy, Building and Water engineering projects, gained in a diverse range of geological environments. He has also acted as an independent Expert during dispute resolution and litigation. Currently he Chairs the European working group for retaining wall design for the update of EC7, and is the UK representative for TC212 (deep foundations). He has been a lead author for several industry design guides, including an upcoming CIRIA guide for the application of numerical modelling in design. Tony was the Section Editor and lead author for the ICE Manual of Geotechnical Engineering chapters on foundation design. Tony has received several industry awards for innovation, including early applications of deep soil mixing, and for the use of ultralightweight fill. Speaker 2 Ir. Linus Fong Ir Linus Fong is an Associated Director of AECOM. He obtained his BEng from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1994. He has 23 years of experience in geotechnical engineering with specialisation in marine geotechnics, related to marine ground investigation, dredging, reclamation, seawall embankment and ground improvement in soft clays and loose sands. He has involved in many major reclamation works in Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and Middle East. Speaker 3 Dr Wilhelm Degen Dr Wilhelm Degen obtained his PhD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, and he is a Technical Director of Ground Improvement Solutions. Dr Degen has 25 years of experience in ground improvement using Vibro-Compaction and Vibro Replacement Stone Column technology, and he is recognized as an expert in this specialized field. He has worked on the design and implementation of numerous ground improvement projects in the USA and internationally. These include the Hong Kong Airport Core Projects, Hong Kong Disneyland, World Island Dubai, Port of Stockholm, Hanoi-Haiphong Expressway, and the Hong Kong Border Crossing. Speaker 4 Simon Auvergne Simon Auvergne is the geotechnical manager for the challenging tunneling MTR project SCL 1128. He is working since 2007 for one of the leadding construction company, Bouygues TP and its subsidiary Dragages HK. During that time he was involved in challenging tunneling projects in several places around the world including, South Africa, Egypt and Hong Kong. Speaker 5 Prof. Masaki Kitazume Masaki Kitazume graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology with a BEng in 1979, and a MEng in 1981. Then he joined the Port and Harbour Research Institute, Tokyo, where he has worked for 30 years. He has been Head of the Soil Stabilization Laboratory for 20 years and has worked on the interaction of improved ground and soft ground in order to establish design codes for several ground improvement techniques. In 1994 he was AGS (HK) page 3 of 7
awarded a DEng from Tokyo Institute of Technology on the design of Deep Mixing improved ground. In 2011 he became Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology. Prof. Kitazume has been involved in many land reclamation and ground improvement projects, including Tokyo/Haneda and Kansai International Airports, Bussan Immersed Tunnel Project in Korea, Cai Mep Port in Vietnam, Virginia Port Expansion in USA, Pasir Panjang Terminal in Singapore, and a peer review for Deep Cement Mixing for the Hong Kong Third Runway. He has published three books on Deep Mixing and Sand Compaction Piles. He has won many awards and he is a Member of the ISSMGE Technical Committee TC17 on Ground Improvement. Speaker 6 Dr Saw Ay Lee Dr Saw Ay Lee obtained her first-class honours degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University Technology of Malaysia. Following her graduation, she gained a breadth of experience in the design of excavation, slope stability and ground improvement works through different projects in Singapore. She further obtained her PhD from National University of Singapore in cement-treated soil column in 2015 then joined Golder Associates in Hong Kong. She is currently providing geotechnical expert support service especially DCM related advisory for the HK Airport Authority in HKIA 3rd Runway reclamation works. In the HKIA 3rd Runway, DCM has been adopted as the main ground improvement technique to reclaim 400 hectares of land in which can be considered as one of the largest DCM works in the world. Speaker 7 Chris Lawson Chris Lawson, Managing Director of TenCate Geosynthetics Asia-Pacific based in Hong Kong, has worked in the field of geosynthetics for 30 years covering Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. Mr Lawson has been involved in developing the geosynthetics Standards and Codes of Practice, and is author of over fifty technical papers on the subject of geosynthetics. Speaker 8 Bruno Vingiani Mr. Bruno Vingiani is Senior Geotechnical Engineer at the Design, Research and Development Dept. of Trevi S.p.A., an international specialized contractor operating in the field of Foundation Engineering. He holds a M.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Padua (Italy) and a postgraduate diploma in Geotechnical Engineering. He boasts 30 years of uninterrupted experience in dealing with the underground. With half of this period spent managing construction jobsites worldwide and the rest in designing deep foundations and soil treatment interventions at the headquarter of the company, he has acquired a comprehensive and qualified knowledge in performing structural and plastic diaphragm walls, driven, bored and CFA piles, rock and ground anchors, soil improvements by cement and chemical grouting, jet grouting, deep mixing and compensation grouting.
