FOOTY RECORD ISSUE 13 12 July 2014 $2.00

In recent times there has been increasing concern raised within community football across the state surrounding the implication of escalating player payments and the longterm sustainable nature of this growth on clubs and leagues into the future. As part of a coordinated effort to tackle this issue on behalf of community football, AFL Victoria has commissioned an anonymous online club survey to help identify player payment issues and how they are impacting on-field competitiveness, club sustainability, volunteer recruitment and retention, as well as ideas on how they can be better managed into the future. All WRFL club presidents and administrators have been notified of the survey via email earlier this week and are requested to form a group of relevant representatives from within the club to complete the survey by 5pm on Friday the 25th of July 2014. The survey will take around 30 minutes to complete and will form part of the process that will provide important feedback that will be critical in ultimately shaping a state-wide solution to this issue. For more information on the survey, please contact AFL Victoria North West Planning Manager Darryl AFL VICTORIA SEEKING THE ASSISTANCE OF CLUBS Collings on (03) 8341 6074 or by email at darryl. collings@aflvic.com.au In other news, Round 13 marks the end of an era as Division Two will be split to form an eight and six club contest as the much anticipated Division Three competition comes into form. To view full fixtures for the remaining five rounds of football for both Division Two and Three, be sure to visit our website at www.wrfl.asn.au. Also in this week s Footy Record, we check in to see how our WRFL players are tracking in the three local VFL clubs in Williamstown, Werribee and Footscray (p3) as well as take a trip back down memory lane to the old FDFL days as the Footscray and Yarraville Socials Football Club prepare for their next annual reunion at the end of this month (p5). Of course we have all the best players, goal kickers and team lists ahead of this weekend s matches, plus all your favourites including our WRFL Super Quiz (page 32), Celebrity Tipping competition (p31) and Images of the Week (p59). Until then, play hard, kick straight and let the games begin! The expansion of the Victorian Football League in the western suburbs has proved to be very beneficial to the Western Region Football League, with a number of former WRFL players pulling on the jumper s of Werribee, Williamstown and Footscray in the state competition this season. After 13 rounds this year, Williamstown are sitting at eight wins and four losses which has them in top four contention, currently sitting in fifth place by percentage. Williamstown Football Club Manager Chris Dixon said the WRFL competition is extremely important to the growth of the club, being that the league is in their backyard. It s been great to see so many players go from the WRFL to the Western Jets and then on to Williamstown, as is the natural progression for WRFL juniors who don t get drafted by an AFL club, Dixon said. Being completely stand alone this year, Williamstown Football Club can provide greater opportunities for WRFL players following this pathway as we have seen this year with players such as Jake McKenzie, Sam Critchley, Dylan Conway, Ben Casley, Charlie Nastasi, Josh Bench and Jack Charleston all representing the club at senior level. Former Altona player Jake McKenzie, who is the brother of Gold Coast Suns player Trent and current Williamstown player Kane, is one player who has been able to contribute well to the Williamstown senior side this year, playing as a rebounding defender. Williamstown Juniors Football Club is also well represented at the Seagulls, with former players Dylan Conway, Sam Critchley and Ben Casley in the senior mix, playing versatile key position roles at either end of the ground. Dixon said that local Spotswood product Jack Charleston was his usual reliable self in the senior side, while he mentioned Josh Bench (Altona) and Charlie Nastasi (Spotswood) are banging down the door of senior selection after displaying strong form in the Development League. Things are very similar down at Avalon Airport Oval as the Werribee Tigers Football Club also has a good crop of former WRFL players working hard in their ranks. Like the Seagulls, the Tigers are sitting at eight wins and four losses this season with a chance for a top four place still on the cards despite letting a few opportunities slip with a number of close losses earlier in the year. WRFL STARS KEEPING PACE IN THE VFL According to Werribee Operations Manager Stuart Balloch, some of the young players earning their stripes in the VFL are Harrison King (Werribee Districts) and Jason Robinson (Altona). Robinson in particular Balloch said has not looked out of place, playing as the 23rd man in the VFL senior side on occasions this year. Balloch also praised the efforts of James Taylor (Albion), Abdul Jaawad (Altona) and Ben Stretton (Yarraville Seddon) who have all shown strong development through season 2014. Footscray, new to the VFL this year have also given opportunities to some former WRFL players such as Todd Finco (Albion), Jase Perkins (Port Colts), Michael Fogarty, Christian Elliot and David Iaccarino (all from Spotswood). With all five players chalking up a combined 26 games this season, coach Chris Maple is impressed with their transition from the local league to VFL ranks. All five WRFL boys have acquitted themselves very well at the VFL level and have been fantastic with their dedication required in training, weights, and recovery, he said. They have also developed significantly as players and have showed good leadership and performed well at club level. Sitting atop the VFL ladder with nine wins in their debut season, the Bulldogs are tracking along nicely, with many fans excited about the prospect of playing finals. Yet Maple said that despite the hype, the side is focused on preparing to play the same way they always have. My expectations won t change leading up to finals, he said. Play as hard as you can, set up structurally how we want you to, train hard and invest time into your team mates. With a number of WRFL junior players also showcasing their talents with the Western Jets TAC Cup Squad this year, the future for WRFL players is looking bright. CELEBRATION of the F&Y SOCIALS By Kirstie Fitzgerald While football may seem like it is a whirlwind of stats, on field performances and premierships, at its core, its clear football is far more valuable than what appears on paper. For four-time premiership player Barry Bennett, of the Footscray and Yarraville Socials Football Club, it was just as important about what was achieved off the field, creating bonds with teammates which have lasted beyond the final siren. Despite how successful the club was, it s always a great feeling to catch up with a number of old teammates, coaches and officials after all these years, Bennett said. Originally formed in a tin shed in the early 30s, the F&Y Socials joined the then Footscray Districts Football League in 1945 and quickly established themselves as a powerhouse in the competition. Enjoying outstanding success in the late 1950s early 1960s, the club secured four premierships in five years, before officially going into recession in 1975. To play in all those grand finals and only lose one, were great years, Bennett said. It was a fantastic club to play for and it had a really good social environment, which made it even more enjoyable. It is through this social environment and friendships which is driving Barry s passion for the annual F&Y Socials reunion luncheon, held on Friday July 25 from 12noon at the Pound Cafe at Whitten Oval. With more than 130 past players, coaches, umpires and officials turning up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the club s 1963 premiership last year, Barry said that this was another great opportunity to reminisce on old times. MAKE YOUR NEXT FUNCTION LAST A SEASON BOOK YOUR NEXT EVENT AT THE VALLEY AND EACH GUEST WILL RECEIVE A 2014/15 SEASON S PASS WRFL CEO Bob Tregear pictured with Barry Bennett at the F&Y Socials reunion last year. Photo: Kirstie Fitzgerald As always, our greatest challenge is finding all our old teammates and former members to celebrate this great day with, so hopefully through the WRFL and football community the word will spread and a number of our past members will show up and enjoy a great day. If you know of anyone who used to be involved in the F&Y Socials, please extend an invitation to them and forward their details to myself. To RSVP to the event or for more information, please contact Barry on 0400-848-923 by no later than July 18. We are able to cater for all styles and occasions. Six games to go till the finals and the final five is set and unlikely to change. So what is left for those sides who will have their mad Monday on August 18th? Pride for the players and an early start to getting it right for 2015 for the clubs. Players futures will be decided in the next few weeks, both by the players and clubs, as they take stock on an unsuccessful season. Sunshine has been the big disappointment of Division One and in the next six weeks can regain some pride. Last week they hit the front at the final change, but in the spirit of their season, just could not close the deal in the end against Werribee Districts. You won t find anyone willing to back the Kangaroos this week against Deer Park and rightly so. Condos and Wong did a number on Albion last week, and will probably do it again this week. Our radio Match of the Day is between Altona and Hoppers Crossing. The Vikings are very capable of winning this game, while the young Hoppers side is building in confidence every week, and though they will have the occasional hiccup, the Warriors should keep its winning run going. Port Melbourne Colts host Werribee Districts, and the sheer class of the Districts should get them home. Good to see De Pelligrin back last week and the continued good form of the Dean Brothers makes them a real chance for a great finals series. St. Albans was disappointing last week against Spotswood. They were slow, predictable and lacking intensity against a much slicker Spotswood outfit. This week coach Marcus Barclay can try a few things against the Eagles. I did think Lachy Badderley looked good down back with Michael Spooner pretty impressive up forward. The young Albion side were never in the hunt against Deer Park and I think it might be déjà vu all over again this week. Division One Reserves Report Facing another top four opponent in Werribee Districts, Sunshine pulled off a huge away win to leapfrog the Tigers into third spot and consolidate their position in the top four. Coming off a surprise loss against Hoppers Crossing last weekend, Sunshine jumped the home side to open a 15-point lead at the first change. By three quarter time, the lead had grown to 29-points and although Werribee Districts came home hard, Sunshine survived a goalless final term to win 9.12.66 to 7.9.51. Aaron Batty kicked three in a best on ground display for the Kangaroos while Kyle Frahm added two for the winners. Andrew Taylor and Anthony Limina both kicked two for the Tigers who have now lost their last two games after stringing together eight wins in a row. The big beneficiaries of the Tigers slip up were Altona who won their third game on the trot to leap into second spot on the ladder after they defeated Yarraville Seddon. In a low scoring game, the Vikings opened up a 24-point half time lead before falling behind by five points at three quarter time after the Eagles dug deep to kick five goals to none in the third quarter. Altona rebounded in the last, keeping the Eagles scoreless and winning 9.10.64 to 7.6.48. Brett Miller was best for Altona with two goals, while Adrian Spiteri also booted two majors for the winners. Michael Volpi kicked four of Yarraville Seddon s seven goals as the Eagles remain in ninth place with just two wins this season. Deer Park remains in fifth after they took care of business against a winless Albion outfit. Trailing by five points at quarter time, the Lions snapped back in the second term to cruise to a 14.7.91 to 9.6.60 win. In other games, Hoppers Crossing jumped to sixth spot after they defeated Port Melbourne by 38-points. The Warriors have now won two in a row and remain an outside chance of playing finals, while St.Albans remains two games clear on top of the competition ladder after they trounced Spotswood by 75-points. Sunshine face another tough challenge in Round 13 as they host fifth placed Deer Park. Albion welcome Spotswood who will be looking to rebound from their big loss. Altona face Hoppers Crossing at home, while Werribee Districts will be looking to end their losing streak away to Port Melbourne. Finally St.Albans come up against Yarraville Seddon at home as they look to maintain their advantage atop the Division One Reserves ladder. TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING The penultimate round before the divisional split provided an ample example as to why incoming division three is so desperately needed. With margins ranging from 82 to 230-points, it wasn t quite a round for the underdogs. One of the sides to enjoy a big win was North Footscray who bounced back from consecutive beltings to dish out some punishment of their own on a hapless Tarneit. It s been a tough debut season for the Titans and their lack of defensive pressure will give new head coach Max De Groot serious headaches. It was almost routine seeing a handful of Devils sweep down the wing and deliver the footy lace out to full forward Robert Cavka. Cavka was virtually unstoppable, marking everything and could have finished with more than his eventual tally of eight goals. Kieran Murphy also added a touch of class to the Devil s forward half and kicked seven of his own. In extracting some positives from the wreckage, Tarneit need not look any further than centre square duo Ryan Delekta and Thomas Robertson. Their willingness to run with the footy and take the game on was a high point and no mean feat when the scoreboard continues to tick against you. The big margins around the grounds saw individuals kick big bags one of those was Wyndhamvale s Paul O Shea who kicked 14 and climbed to equal second on the goal kicking table as the Falcons demolished Braybrook by 159-points. Despite their recently improved form, Sanctuary Lakes struggled against the Caroline Springs defence as they were held to a single goal in their 14-goal loss. Similarly, Laverton managed just five majors and suffered a heavy defeat to league leaders Glen Orden. Despite the 132-point margin, for a side close to the foot of the ladder it is far from a terrible performance against the benchmark side. Manor Lakes had an astonishing 16 goal kickers as they trounced North Sunshine. The percentage boost from the 181-point win is invaluable for the Lakers who know climb to sixth on the ladder. Parkside walloped Albanvale to the tune of 230-points as the Magpies kicked an astonishing 39 goals. There are few better examples as to why the divisional split is so important, despite Parkside s fearsome reputation, Albanvale are far from the DIVISION TWO seniors REPORT worst side going around. Finally Sunshine Heights demonstrated the gap between the top four and the rest as they lost by 98-points to the Roosters. The talented Yze boys combined for four goals apiece. As seems to be the yo-yoing nature of the fixture this year, the final round before division three is introduced is far more competitive on paper. The match of the round sees Glen Orden travel to West Footscray for an enticing encounter between two flag favourites. The Falcons host a Caroline Springs side that must start beating top four teams if they still harbour finals ambitions. Albanvale and Tarneit fight it out in an important encounter for the Cobras as sides jockey for division three finals places. It is the same situation as two sides in the running for those spots Braybrook and Laverton meet in a clash that will see how far this Magpies side has truly progressed. North Sunshine could not have asked for a tougher final division two fixture as they host Parkside while the clash between Sunshine Heights and North Footscray should prove far more competitive. Finally, Sanctuary Lakes will be quietly confident they can depart division two with a bang as they host Manor Lakes. A competitive display by the Sharks will encourage them they are moving in the right direction despite relegation. DIVISION TWO Reserves Report Six football clubs will be relegated by the end of the week as division two shrinks to eight in what will be a gargantuan moment for the competition. Although the move appears a sombre one for some, the fact remains that the best contested football on offer is yet to come in 2014. However, before that event transpires, one more fixture is yet to take place as four teams face of for the last time this season. North Sunshine will come up against competition juggernaut Parkside at Dempster Park, while Sanctuary Lakes will battle Manor Lakes at Featherbrook Reserve. Based on recent form, the Maggies and Sharks will go into the match as favourites this weekend, but as we all know in football-anything is possible. The rest of the competition will approach round 13 as if the split were already into affect. Glen Orden will want a fresh start against West Footscray. The Hawks sit at the foot of the mountain in eighth place and may be suffering from a lack of depth considering the overwhelming strength of their seniors. The Roosters are tipped by many to be playing off for a premiership in September, so the result could say a lot about where both these sides are at. Albanvale and Tarneit haven t had much reason to celebrate in 2014 but something is sure to give on Saturday when one of them acquires their first victory of the season. The result is important, because the win may serve for the ultimate springboard for a finals launch in the third tier. A victory just before the split is vital, as fixtures between the bottom sides have been largely close affairs. The dual between Laverton and Braybrook will also be intriguing. The Brookers will want to stamp their authority over the new division whilst Laverton will want to strengthen their gap over the bottom two sides of the competition. North Footscray and Sunshine Heights face off in an encounter that may highlight the round at Hansen Reserve. Percentage could be a factor, however a win for the Dragons would see them on equal points as the Devils. North Footscray knows how important a win is as it would almost certainly be enough to keep them in finals contention. TIV BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TRAINING Wyndhamvale and Caroline Springs round out the weekend s fixture, with the Falcons favourites at home. The Lakers have been a mixed bag this season. Their best football is good enough to compete with any side in the league and Wyndhamvale will be expecting a battle. History beckons for the reserves competition. UMPIRES CORNER By Graeme Hodgart The EJ Whitten Legends Game is always a great event. The recent game, won again by the Victorian team, was no exception. The crowd of about 25,000 boasted many families and also groups of young teenagers enjoying the atmosphere. Hopefully, the awareness of men s health especially in regards to prostate cancer was further extended and valuable funds were raised to assist those dealing with this deadly condition. The EJ Whitten Legends Game itself always has a very strong connection with the western suburbs. Firstly the great EJ Whitten grew up in Footscray, went to school at St.Augustines in Yarraville and later resided in Altona North. Let s not forget his 321 games for the Bulldogs after being recruited from Braybrook. Son, Ted Whitten Junior, who is the CEO of the EJ Whitten Foundation, played for Footscray & Yarraville Socials in the FDFL and went on to play 144 games for Footscray. Out on the field there were a host of ex-doggies including Nathan Brown as a runner while for the All Stars there were Nathan Eagleton and Paul Hudson. For Victoria there were Scott West and Tony Liberatore. Mitch Hahn, Steven Kretiuk, Paul Dimattina and Ryan Hargrave were all listed to play but not all of them made it onto the ground. To add to the influence of the west, Deer Park had three representatives listed in Hargrave, Ryan Houlihan and Brent Guerra. Even within the ranks of the umpires for the big game there was a well-known western suburbs lad whose talent was also on display in none other than Rod Davies. Rod was a budding junior field umpire who began his career in the FDFL in the late 1970s. Taking up flag waving, Rod was one of the goal umpires in consecutive A1 senior grand finals from 1981 to 1985. He then went into town and umpired 173 AFL games from 1987 until 1998 including a couple of grand finals. Rod was coach of the WRFL goal umpires for several seasons and is now coach of the AFL goalies. During the charity game, an interesting incident occurred when a player had a shot for goal after the siren. The ball was contested near the score line and came off hands and went through for a behind. The field umpire did not allow the score. A similar thing happened in a WRFL game recently. An after the siren shot for goal dropped short and a defender punched the ball which went through for a behind. This time the field umpire allowed the score. Some of the umpires involved weren t sure if the correct decision had been made. So at half-time they got out the rule book. Rule 12.5 of the Laws of the AFL relates to scoring a behind after play has ended. It says that a behind shall be recorded if the ball is touched by another player and the field umpire is satisfied that it was not assisted through by a player of the same team. Home of the WRFL Finals Division One U18 REPORT By Lavan Ruban Deer Park recorded their sixth win of the season after a consistent four-quarter effort earned them a 124-point victory over Albion at John McLeod Reserve. Seven-goal second and third terms by Deer Park saw their initial dominance transform into a rout, as Albion were unable to convert their effort on the scoreboard, kicking just two goals for the match. Despite digging deep to gain some control in the fourth quarter, it was too little too late for Albion, eventually going down 22.10 (142) to 2.6 (18). Josh Schembri kicked four goals for Deer Park, rotating through half-forward, centre, and halfback, bringing his season tally to 21. Timothy Knight was adjudged the best player for the Lions by coach Colin Clohesy, while the Cat s Caleb Macpherson who kicked both Albion s goals and Tyler Parkinson were the best for the opposing team. Around the grounds, Spotswood is firmly in grand final contention, after defeating the then-secondplaced Hoppers Crossing by 88-points. Mitchell Mclean and Charles Bettiol kicked four majors each for Spotswood, while Sam Davis was coach Matt Dean s best. Despite the results, Hoppers Crossing s Joel Radovanovic played another solid game. The score line of 17.10 (112) to 3.6 (24) sees Spotswood and Hoppers interchange positions on the ladder, with the Woodsmen advancing into second place. Altona remain in finals contention after their fourth win of the season, this time against Yarraville Seddon. The final margin was a comfortable 51-points. Vikings Joshua Kurtis, Steele Aburrow, and Jesse Zammit kicked three each, while teammate Heath Rafferty was judged the best on ground. Yarraville Seddon s Ross Celano again played well, and was coach Greg Wray s best. This Saturday, Albion will return home to host Werribee Districts, who are yet to lose this season, conceding a mere 258-points from nine games this year. Altona will play Hoppers Crossing at Grant Reserve, with the Warriors eager for a win after their crushing round 12 defeat. Wrapping up round 13 is Yarraville Seddon as they face an in-form Spotswood outfit, while Deer Park can enjoy their big round 12 win a little longer, as they enjoy the bye. Division TWO U18 REPORT By Kirstie Fitzgerald Home of the WRFL Finals It was a long time between drinks for Manor Lakes after breaking a six week losing streak in front of a home crowd against West Footscray/Sunshine. Getting a jump on their opponents early in the opening term, Manor Lakes took a swift three goal lead at the first break before unleashing spearheads Brodie Oakford and Aaron Campbell. The pair ran rampant in the Storm s forward fifty, booting a combined eight goals while their backline teammates were able to hold off the forward pressure from the hybrid squad, keeping them scoreless for two quarters. West Footscray/Sunshine s Shaun Kostizen and Jack Hargraves tried hard all day for their side, with Hargraves booting a vital goal for the visitors, but it was simply not enough to match the Storm s accuracy in front of the big sticks. The final margin 15.9 (99) to 5.6 (36). Down the freeway at Soldiers Reserve, the Tigers continued their winning ways, dismissing an inform Sanctuary Lakes outfit by 56-points. The run and carry from Werribee Districts midfield was simply too good for the young Sharks, registering twice as many inside fifties than their opposition. Sitting in second place behind Newport, the Tigers are keen to claw their way back on top of the competition ladder, as the Power extended its one game buffer with a 41-point win over Hoppers Crossing. With both teams kicking true in the opening term, there was nothing splitting the pair at the first break, as onlookers settled in for a belter of a game. However Newport turned up the heat, piling on nine goals to three to run home victors for the eleventh time this season. It was a much closer affair at a windy Wyndham Vale, with the Falcons scrapping over the line by a mere three goals.
