Collection Description Biographical Note Emily Wright is a professor of English at Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina where she is also the director of the Writing Across the Curriculum program, which works with faculty, staff, and students to improve the writing of all members of the campus community. In 2007, she directed the Southern Writers Symposium at Methodist University where the topic was "Neglected Southern Authors," and featured the work of Raymond Andrews. Raymond Andrews was born June 6, 1934 in rural Morgan County, Georgia. Andrews first published work was a short story published in Sports Illustrated in 1966. Over ten years later his critically acclaimed novel Appalachee Red was published by the Dial Press, and he received the James Baldwin Prize in 1979. The following year he and his wife divorced, and he published the second volume of the Muskhogean trilogy, Rosiebelle Lee Wildcat Tennessee. The trilogy was completed in 1983 with the publication of Baby Sweet s. During the 1970s and 80s, Andrews published essays and reviews, gave frequent lectures and readings, and participated in numerous writing workshops. In 1990 Andrews published a memoir of his childhood growing up in rural Georgia, The Last Radio Baby. The following year he published a new novel, Jessie and Jesus and Cousin Claire. Raymond Andrews took his own life in November 1991. Caroline Pafford Miller (1903-1992) was an American writer. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1934 for her first novel, Lamb in His Bosom, about her home state of Georgia. Miller was born and raised in Waycross, Georgia, and moved to Baxley, North Carolina, in the late 1920s. She married William D. Miller, superintendent of schools in the Baxley area, and the couple had three sons. Scope and Content Note The collection consists of research materials compiled by Dr. Emily Wright about Georgia writers, Raymond Andrews and Caroline Pafford Miller. The materials include copies of articles about the writers as well as writings by Wright about the authors. Also included is material collected and created by Joanne Bishop, niece of Miller. There is correspondence (including photocopies and transcripts of many letters) between the members of Miller's family as well as two hours of a recorded interview of Bishop by Wright.
