AIA SAN ANTONIO PEOPLE + PLACE PEOPLE AWARDS CALL FOR NOMINATIONS AIA San Antonio s People Awards recognize leadership achievement at significant stages in an individual s professional development. The Rising Star Award salutes young professional leadership. The Legacy Award honors a lifetime of AIA leadership. The Community Partner Award honors an individual outside the practice of architecture whose vision and influence is evidenced in significant urban, environmental or neighborhood impacts. NOMINATION PROCEDURE AIA San Antonio Chapter members are invited to submit nominations for our 2018 People Awards. The Nomination Form and Award Criteria are available on the AIA San Antonio website, www.aiasa.org. There is no limit to how many years a nominee may be submitted for an award; however, a recipient may receive a specific award only once. Awards are not given posthumously. Members of the current AIA San Antonio Design Awards Committee Members are not eligible to be nominated. There is no entry fee for nominations. NOMINATION DEADLINE 5:00 P.M. ON OCTOBER 5, 2018. Nominations should be submitted electronically via the online submission form on www.aiasa.org Nomination letters should be addressed to: Federico Cavazos, AIA Chair, AIA Design Awards Committee GENERAL SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS u Information submitted should specifically demonstrate how the nominee s achievements, work, contributions, and experiences meet the purpose and criteria of the specific award. u All nominations must be submitted in electronic file format using Adobe Acrobat (.pdf). Nomination materials are to be submitted as a single PDF file in the order listed, and within the limits listed in the individual award nomination guidelines. u Digital images contained in the PDF file are to be of low resolution. The submittal PDF file must be smaller than 15MB, use of PDF Optimizer and the Save As feature of Acrobat Professional will help make files compact without compromising integrity. u Upon final selection, nominators and/or recipients will be contacted to provide high-resolution images as needed. These images will be used for website and media announcements and award presentations at the People + Place Celebration. u Black text on a light/white background is preferred. Provide succinct narratives and descriptive statements with images. u Letters of support should be one page in length and explicit in their recommendation and reasons for support. u A page is defined as 8.5 x 11. PEOPLE AWARD CATEGORIES RISING STAR The AIA San Antonio Rising Star Award is awarded to a member who has shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in the early stages of his or her architectural career. AIA SAN ANTONIO PEOPLE + PLACE PEOPLE AWARDS CALL FOR NOMINATIONS COMMUNITY PARTNER The Community Partner Award recognizes an individual outside the chapter s membership for an extended commitment to community service and/or significant contributions to the community as evidenced in a positive impact on urban, environmental, or neighborhood issues. ELIGIBILITY Members of the San Antonio community who are not practicing architects are eligible for this award. CRITERIA Criteria for selection includes: u Work that has made a difference through leadership, or the singular effort of an individual that has positively impacted the community u Demonstration of an extended commitment to community service u Evidence of a significant, positive impact on urban, environmental, or neighborhood issues SUBMITTAL The submission should include the following materials, in the order listed, in a single PDF file: u Complete the 2018 online Nomination Form u A one-page nomination letter written by the nominating member summarizing the nominee s contributions and fit the criteria above u A biography of the nominee, including professional history, offices and positions held, honors, and activities, to include a bulleted list of contributions (not to exceed two pages) u Exhibits of a maximum of 6 pages with images and/or other materials that best demonstrate the accomplishments or effect of the nominee s contributions u 2-3 one-page letters of support that are specific in their recommendation and reasons for support u A photograph of the nominee LEGACY AWARD The Legacy Award recognizes an AIA San Antonio member for a lifetime of distinguished leadership and dedication to architecture, the profession, and the community. The award is our chapter s highest honor. This award recognizes members who, by their example and service, have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession and to the community. CRITERIA Criteria for selection includes: u Evidence of nominee s contribution of great depth and breadth, having an individual and collective effect and influence on the profession of architecture u Aspects of the nominee s work or life experience that may have reflected contributions or sensitivity concerning areas of special interest to AIA San Antonio, its members, and the architecture profession u Significant contributions to the practice of architecture u Significant contributions to the architectural profession u Significant contributions to the community SUBMITTAL The submission should include the following materials, in the order listed, in a single PDF file: u Complete the 2018 online Nomination Form u A one-page nomination letter written by the nominating member summarizing the nominee s contributions and fit to the criteria above u A biography of the nominee (not to exceed four pages). AIA SAN ANTONIO PEOPLE + PLACE PLACE AWARDS CALL FOR ENTRIES The AIA San Antonio Place Awards recognizes outstanding built and unbuilt architectural projects by AIA members that raise public awareness of the value of good design. Successful submissions should highlight design solutions that have made, or could make, a positive impact on individuals and communities affected by the project and accomplishing the goals of clients and users. They will be judged on quality of design, resolution of the program or idea, and innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique. Drawings and diagrams demonstrating the underlying concepts of the project are strongly encouraged. CATEGORIES BUILT u Construction completed after January 1, 2013, and prior to August 1, 2018 u Member of AIA San Antonio and licensed with the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners at the time of the project s completion UNBUILT u Commissioned or noncommissioned projects under construction, not yet in construction or not planned for construction u Design completed after January 1, 2013 u Member of AIA San Antonio RESEARCH + DESIGN AWARD **NEW CATEGORY** u Project started after January 1, 2013, and prior to August 1, 2018 u Member of AIA San Antonio DIVINE DETAIL u Construction completed after January 1, 2013, and prior to August 1, 2018 u Submitted by an Architect or Associate who is a current member of AIA San Antonio STUDENT u Current students or recent graduates from UTSA and San Antonio College Architecture programs may submit assigned studio projects, theoretical projects, research projects or competition entries which were completed after 2016 and while at UTSA or SAC. u Student award projects will not be showcased in the Design Awards Exhibition. u Projects showcased in the Student Gallery are ineligible for Award consideration. COTE AWARD The Committee on the Environment (COTE) Award recognizes excellence in sustainability as defined by the Measures of Sustainable Design which envision the enduring prosperity of all living things and seek to create communities, buildings and products that contribute to that vision. In addition to the place awards text, submittals for this category must be accompanied by an additional 250-word describing the relevant sustainable criteria. Not all of the Ten Measures of Sustainable Design are required to be described in order to qualify. Narrative can be used to describe only one measure. Refer to Attachment A for the Specific Measures. The following metrics questions will need to be included below your additional descriptive text, in the same pdf. You will need to copy and paste the bulleted list below and apply your answer. u Is potable water used for irrigation? (y/n) u Is potable water used for space cooling? (y/n) u Is rainwater collected on site? (y/n) u sf/occupant - during typical occupancy (# of sf) u Walk score (from walkscore.com. 0-100%) u Does the project comply with energy code prescriptive requirements? AIA SAN ANTONIO PEOPLE + PLACE PLACE AWARDS CALL FOR ENTRIES COMMUNITY IMPACT AWARD Any Design Award submittal located in Bexar County is eligible for the Community Impact Award. This award recognizes a project that positively impacts the community. Submittals for this category must be accompanied by an additional 150- to 250-word Community Impact Award statement explaining how your project addresses one or more of the stated criteria: u ECONOMIC DISPARITY. Architecture or the design process indicating reduced disparities in the economics of the larger community or individuals served by the project. u EDUCATIONAL INEQUITY. Projects that address inequities in our education system and those that increase the quality of education. u COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. The design has led to increased civic engagement. u HEALTH OUTCOMES. Projects that improve health outcomes on the larger community or individuals served by the project. u HUMAN RIGHTS. Projects that contribute to the respect and observance of human equality and fundamental freedoms for all, without regard to race, sex, language or religion. u DESIGN EXCELLENCE. Projects that integrate effective social outcomes with the highest level of design expectations. If your entry qualifies, please check the designated box on the Place Entry Form. REQUIREMENTS u For Built and Unbuilt projects where several parties share responsibility for a project, the Architect must be an AIA San Antonio member and credit must be given to all who substantially contributed to the project. Primary portions of the design of the project submitted must be performed by AIA San Antonio members and their firms. u An entrant may submit an unlimited number of projects completed anywhere in the world. u Multiple entries of the same project will not be accepted. Efforts by successor firms and individuals or joint venture members should be coordinated prior to entering a project. Disqualifications resulting from multiple entries are not the responsibility of AIA San Antonio. u Separate entries of related projects are acceptable (for example, the interior completion of a lease space by one Architect in the building designed by another Architect). u Submission of a project represents permission from the submitter, the owner and photographer to publish the project. u Projects that have won AIA San Antonio Design Awards in prior years are not eligible for re-entry. However, a project that has previously been awarded the Mayor s Choice Award, COTE Award, and/or a Community Impact Award may be resubmitted. SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS u Each entry will be judged solely by a PDF presentation and written project description. u Two-Part Online submission required (payment & project entry). JURY PDF A PDF presentation containing no more than 20 pages shall be used for jury review. No more than 4 pages required for Divine Detail. The electronic filename must be Jury18ProjectName.pdf. Each submittal should be concise and of high graphic quality. Submittals may not contain sound, animation, video clips, panorama movies, hyperlinks, or links to other files. Each PDF file should not exceed 20 MB. Individual images used shall not exceed 1024 x 768 resolution. Do not identify the entrant or the entrant s firm in the Jury PDF. Entries will be judged for their documented R+D methodology, impact on the building industry, and potential to advance the aesthetic, environmental, and social value of architecture. Digital technologies such as software, modeling programs, mobile apps, and analysis tools are welcomed. Research that better informs design locally and globally are also encouraged. ELIGIBILITY u R&D Project commenced after January 1, 2013, and prior to August 1, 2018. DESIGN AWARD EXHIBITION AIA San Antonio will hang an exhibit of all 2018 Design Award submittals in the Center for Architecture Gallery. Student Award submittals are not eligible for the exhibition.
