Hawera Star Saturday 24 Apr 1880 Normanby Notwithstanding the irregularity of attendance caused by the late Maori scare, the school has been well taught, and has much improved in discipline and intelligence since last year. It has greatly increased in number, and as the master has no one to assist him, the lower classes are necessarily neglected. An active pupil teacher would improve it greatly. They passed a good examination in all the subjects, except reading and scope, which were moderate. Numeration and cyphering were exceedingly good points, the singing too, was very nice, and creditable to all concerned. The children have greatly improved in personal appearance, and are now neat and clean, and seem very happy. In fine, the school made a very good appearance; and Mr Hill has succeeded very well in the difficult work of improving the discipline and instruction. The chairman (Mr Quin) of the School Committee was present during the examination, and Mr Gibson, an ex-chairman, attended in the afternoon.
