Give Blood with the Red Cross During National Volunteer Month The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood during National Volunteer Month this April. Donating blood is a simple way for those who are short on time to make a life changing difference. Volunteer donors are the only source of blood products for those in need of transfusions. Donors of all blood types are needed to help meet patient needs this spring. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver s license or two other forms of identification are required at check in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their predonation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting Red CrossBlood.org or calling 1 800 RED CROSS (1 800 733 2767). WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11th, 2018 St. Laurence High School Raises Over $8,000 for Family of Fallen Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer St. Laurence High School raised over $8,000 by selling special St. Patrick s Day shirts, with proceeds going to the Paul Bauer Memorial Fund. The fund benefits the family of fallen Chicago Police Commander Paul Bauer, who tragically lost his life on February 13. For years, our school has served countless police and firefighter families, and many of our alumni have moved on to become first responders, said St. Laurence High School President Joe Martinez. This cause resonates with so many of our students, families and alumni, and we are happy to have a small part in helping the Bauer family. We are proud of the outpouring of support that the St. Laurence community displayed over the past few weeks. St. Laurence was able to sell nearly 700 shirts in just three days. Students proudly wore the shirts as they marched in the South Side Irish Parade on March 11. The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation is grateful for the love and support shown by the citizens of Chicago after this tragedy. We are especially touched by the efforts of the students at St. Laurence who banded together to help raise funds for the Bauer family, said Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Director of Operations Frank Gross. As Mrs. Erin Bauer said in her thank you letter to the city, One man almost stole my faith in humanity, but the City of Chicago and the rest of the nation restored it and I want to thank you for that. The students at St. Laurence are another example of The good people in this world far outnumber the bad. Wilson Playground Spring News St. Patrick's Day Senior Event was a huge success. Shedd Aquarium Sparks Conservation Action During Earth Week at Shedd Shedd Aquarium is set to host a suite of events and activities leading up to Earth Day this year that are designed to get people of all ages and interests educated and inspired to play a role in protecting the environment. Taking place from Saturday, April 14 through Sunday, April 22, Earth Week at Shedd will provide visitors with individual ways they can take action for the Earth, like reducing their use of singleuse plastic items. Every year, approximately 1 billion people observe Earth Day (April 22) as a day to celebrate the planet. Typically a one day event to take action for the Earth, Shedd is expanding the celebration to a full Earth Week. On site, special events and kidfriendly activities will help guests learn how small commitments make big impacts for the Earth. Outside the aquarium, people can celebrate Earth Week with the Chicagoland community through Shedd organized clean up efforts across the city. On Earth Day of 2017, Shedd Aquarium began its endeavor to reduce plastic pollution locally with simple actions, like choosing to Shedd the Straw. Now, with 100 restaurants and counting! committed to the Shedd the Straw program and many people joining the movement individually, Shedd is challenging individuals and communities to go beyond the straw and reduce their use of other forms of single use plastics, like plastic bags and plastic bottles. Together, #LetsSheddPlastic for a world thriving with aquatic life, sustained by people who love, understand and protect it. Thursday - April 12th St. Rita Holds Groundbreaking and Naming Ceremony for the Bernard J. DelGiorno Campus, the Mrozek Family Fitness Center, and the John McNicholas Baseball Clubhouse On March 23, 2018 the entire St. Rita community came together to witness the official naming of the Bernard J. DelGiorno campus. In recognition of his most gen erous gift of $2.5 million, the campus, St. Rita s home at 77th Street and Western Avenue since 1990, will now be known as the Bernard J. DelGiorno Campus. Mr. DelGiorno, First Vice President of Investments at UBS Financial, said his immigrant parents settled on the south side 97 years ago, where he has spent his entire life. Mr. DelGiorno attended Calumet High School and then went on to earn three degrees from the University of Chicago in Hyde Park where he still resides. As a lifelong resident of the south side of Chicago, my intention was to help invest in the outstanding St. Rita High School legacy, students and facilities. This com mitment to the St. Rita capital campaign is an indication of my confidence in the quality of the staff, alumni, and superior educational process provided to the stu dents of St. Rita, Mr. DelGiorno stated. The campus naming in conjunction with St. Rita s $5.25 million Champions Will Be Made capital campaign ushers St. Rita into a new era of construction and cam pus renovations. Head of School Fr. Paul Galetto, O.S.A., Ph.D. said, This is a great moment in the history of our school and we owe a debt of gratitude to Mr. DelGiorno, Mr. Mrozek and the many benefactors who made this possible. Collectively they have given this school a bright future that will benefit the young men of the south side for years to come. Concurrent with the naming of the DelGiorno Campus, the St. Rita Community held an official groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the construction of the Mrozek Family Fitness Center. Ernie Mrozek 71 and his family continue their unprecedented support of St. Rita with a generous gift to help make the state of the art, 6,000 square foot fitness center a reality. Mr. Mrozek said, The Mrozek Family's commitment to St. Rita High School and its mission has never been stronger. As a Ritaman myself, past president and current chairman of the board, I know that St. Rita's mission to provide a well rounded, values based Catholic edu cation to young men on the south side of Chicago is more important than ever. The Mrozek Family Fitness Center will be open to the entire St. Rita community, so everyone can enjoy the healthy lifestyle that is taught and encouraged at St. Rita. The day also marked the construction of the John McNicholas Baseball Clubhouse, named in honor of John McNicholas. John was a member of the Class of 2013 and a former St. Rita Mustang baseball player who tragically passed away at the age of 15 from a brain tumor. Thanks to loyal support of donors, St. Rita is poised to construct the pre eminent high school baseball clubhouse, locker room and concession facility. It will be located along the left field line of Mike Zunica Field. I could not be more excited about everything taking place at St. Rita. The John McNicholas Clubhouse has been a dream for almost ten years and I am incred ibly thankful to everyone who made it a reality, said St. Rita President, Mike Zunica. The extensive campus additions and renovations will include the installation of a new hardwood floor in the St. Rita Gymnasium and new bleachers for the Mustang faithful. The final piece of the ongoing campaign will be an $800,000 infusion into St. Rita s already robust endowment that will ensure its place among the top ranked Catholic Schools in the State of Illinois for decades to come. Located on the south side of Chicago, St. Rita of Cascia High School is 113 years old, founded in 1905. St. Rita is a Catholic, Augustinian College Preparatory School. All of the pop up nature play dates are admission free. We re dedicated to connecting people with nature by providing free, family oriented wildlife experiences in the heart of Chicago, said Lincoln Park Zoo Manager of Child and Family Learning Becky Lyons. Family Nature Days bring this mission to life, allowing all families in Chicago to connect with the nature all around them, thanks to the reach of Chicago Park District. We are privileged to have expert partners such as Lincoln Park Zoo that allow us the opportunity to be creative and develop nature programming for the community that otherwise may not be available, said Chicago Park District CEO & Superintendent Michael P. Kelly. The Family Nature Days series is an innovative initiative that connects Chicagoans with nature in our neighborhood parks. During Family Nature Days, children and adults are invited to engage in free play like fort building with natural items, including stumps and seeds, brush up on bird watching or nature hiking skills, and/or venture out on family scavenger hunts. Our city s parks will offer a new, fun educational model for connecting people with nature in their neighborhoods, and generate new environmental stewardship opportunities for everyone to enjoy. The schedule for the program is as follows: TODAY, Wednesday, April 11, 5 7 p.m., Bosley Park, 3044 S. Bonfield St. and Saturday, May 19, 4 6 p.m. Cornell Park, 5473 S. Cornell Ave. For more information on the Family Nature Days program, contact Lincoln Park Zoo at 312 742 2056, learning@lpzoo.org or visit www.chicagoparkdistrict. com. Permission granted Taste of Home WEDNESDAY, April 11th, 2018 Lipinski Introduces Bill to Help Bring Peace and Quiet to Residents Near Railroad Tracks Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL 3) has introduced the Expanding Resources to Establish Quiet Zones Act to provide local communities with additional resources to install the safety equipment necessary to create quiet zones, areas where trains do not sound their horns at crossings. These enhanced measures not only improve safe ty at grade crossings, but also relieve area residents of the irritation of hearing train horns at all hours. As someone who grew up less than one hundred yards from railroad tracks, I m very familiar with the hassles rail traffic can bring in the form of blocked crossings, noisy idling trains, and horns that wake people in the middle of the night, Rep. Lipinski stated. I promise to continue working to bring more peace and quiet to individuals and families who reside near railroad tracks, while also improving safe ty. This bill would help do that. Lipinski s bill increases the authorized levels of funding for programs that can fund quiet zones by a total of $95 million over the next two fiscal years. It also adds the definition of quiet zones to existing law in order to make it clear that these important improvements are eligible to receive federal funding. For years, trains came through the center of our town blaring their horns at all hours of the day and night, said Oak Lawn Mayor Sandra Bury. Congressman Lipinski recognized that this was a true quality of life issue for Oak Lawn s resi dents. Now, Oak Lawn enjoys the quiet zone benefits every day and this would not have happened without Congressman Lipinski. We are truly indebted to him and are thankful for this leadership. A quiet zone may seem like a small thing, but I can tell you that in Oak Lawn it has been truly transformative. Congressman Lipinski s determination and ability to bring groups together is a true asset, stated Chicago Ridge Mayor Charles Tokar. I want to thank him for his ongoing efforts to bring some relief to area residents in the form of establishing much needed quiet zones. It is my hope that this legislation will lead to good news for our community and other municipalities across the nation. As a community with busy railroad tracks running through it, we are grateful to have someone like Rep. Lipinski looking out for us, said Lockport Mayor Steven Streit. The tracks run very close to our Old Canal Days event, which takes place every June. With lots of families walking across or near the tracks, Lipinski recog nized potential safety concerns and was pivotal in our negotiations to get the trains to slow down while the event is going on. On behalf of the residents of Lockport, I want to thank the Congressman for all his hard work, and I look forward to one day seeing our community and the surrounding area benefiting from his quiet zones bill. Harper Meets with Volunteer Violence Prevention Group to Discuss Community Safety State Rep. Sonya Harper, D Chicago, recently sat down with her Violence Reduction & Trauma Response Team to teach and train community residents on how to prevent violent crime and how to respond during emergency situations. I am glad my friends and neighbors joined me to discuss the best ways we can prevent acts of violence as a community, said Harper. It takes a village of concerned citizens to band together and say no to crime while fostering peace and unity for others. Harper s Violence Reduction & Trauma Response Team met at her constituent service office to discuss the effectiveness of various methods to prevent violence locally and to determine the best practices to respond to a crisis. The volunteer group consisting of local residents meets regularly with Harper in an effort to raise aware ness about community safety and gun violence. Our residents cannot always rely on law enforcement to arrive quickly to a scene of crime, so it s important that community residents have the means to react in these situations, said Harper. My group of dedicated vol unteers will continue to meet regularly, and together we will work to reduce violent crime in our area. Harper represents the 6th District, which includes all or portions of Armour Square, Bridgeport, Chicago Lawn, Englewood, Gage Park, Back of the Yards, Canaryville, New City, West Englewood, and Marquette Park. 2525 S Michigan Michigan Ave., Ave., Chicago, Chicago, IL 60616 312-567-2000 w www.mercy-chicago.org ww.me. rc y-chicago.org
