BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH George Washington New (27 Feb., 1819-10 April, 1891) married Adelia Carter, later a Civil War nurse, on 1 Nov., 1841. They had a son, Frank R. New. Dr. George Washington New served as a surgeon in Company F&S of the 7th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He died in Indianapolis in 1891. Adelia Carter (~1824-9 May, 1892) was born in Kentucky. She married George Washington New on 1 Nov., 1841. They had a son, Frank R New. Carter served as a Civil War nurse. She died in Indianapolis in 1892. Frank R. New (June 1843-21 August, 1921) was born in Marion County, Indiana to George Washington New and Adelia Carter. He married Nettie Moore on 8 March, 1893 after both his parents passed. He moved to Los Angeles in 1911 where he divorced Moore. He died and was buried in Los Angeles in 1921. John Chalfant New (6 July, 1831-4 June, 1906) was born in Vernon, Indiana. He is the younger brother of George Washington New, though his brother outlived him. He married Melissa Beeler on 24 May, 1854. They had a son, Harry Stewart New. Beeler passed away in 1867, after which John married Elizabeth Rowena McRae on 8 Sept., 1868. They had two daughters, Elizabeth Chalfant New and Rowena McRae New. Melissa Beeler-New ( ~1834-16 Sept., 1867) was born in Indiana. She married John Chalfant New on 24 May, 1854. They had a son, Harry Stewart New. She passed away in Indianapolis in 1867. Harry Stewart New (31 April, 1858-9 May, 1937) was born in Indianapolis to John Chalfant New and Melissa Beeler-New. He married Kathleen Virginia Mulligan on 18 Oct., 1880. Mulligan passed away in 1883. Harry remarried in 1891 to Catherine McLean Brown. He died in 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland. Elizabeth Rowena Mcrae-New (4 Feb., 1845-19 Feb., 1935) was born in Louisiana. She married John Chalfant New in Virginia on 8 Sept., 1868. They had two daughters, Elizabeth Chalfant New and Rowena McRae New, the latter whom she outlived. She died in Indianapolis in 1935. Mary Easton Thompson-Starr (1 Dec., 1856-27 May, 1911) was born to Mary Chalfant New, the younger sister of George Washington New, and William Clinton Thompson in Indianapolis. Mary married Horace Chipman Starr on 4 March, 1879. They had a son, William Thompson Starr, and a daughter, Marie Wilhelmina Starr. She died in Indianapolis in 1911. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This album contains 42 photographs and 3 tintypes from the family of George Washington New. Most photographs are unidentified. Eleven photographs have names listed underneath their slots in the album. The names appear in the order of George Washington New, Adelia Carter, Frank R New, Mary Thompson Starr, Elizabeth Rowena McRae-New, John Chalfant New, Mary Thompson Starr, Harry Stewart New,, Elizabeth Marie New, Melissa Beeler-New, and Harry Stewart New. Two small tintypes take up two slots on one page. They are unlabeled. The third tintype, about the size of the photographs remains loose at the end of the album. The album holds cartes de visite, which are small portraits mounted on cards.
