From Inverness train station, there are regular train services to Aberdeen and also south to Perth, Glasgow, Edinburgh and London. The Caledonian Sleeper service operates daily between Inverness and London. Inverness is one of Europe s fastest growing cities, with a quarter of the Highland population living in or around it, and the City is ranked fifth out of 189 British cities for its quality of life, the highest of any Scottish city. In the recent past, Inverness has experienced rapid economic growth: between 1998 and 2008, Inverness and the rest of the central Highlands showed the largest growth of average economic productivity per person in Scotland and the second greatest growth in the United Kingdom as a whole, with an increase of 86%. Inverness College is the main campus for the University of the Highlands and Islands. With around 8,500 students, Inverness College hosts around a quarter of all the University of the Highlands and Islands students, and 30% of those studying to degree level.

Then take the right turn which is signposted to Fort Augustus on the B851 road. Follow this road south for nearly 4 miles and pass through the village of Farr. About 1 mile on the south side of Farr the entrance drive to the Artist s Cottage will be seen on the left hand side of the road. The driveway passes between the North House and South House and leads up to a wide spacious gravelled parking area by the front door. HISTORICAL NOTE The construction of The Artist s Cottage was the realisation of an unexecuted design created by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1900. The property was skilfully crafted and completed in 1992 from the original plans prepared by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The original plans and elevational drawings are now held in the Hunterian Art Gallery in Glasgow and it is from this original material that the working drawings for the house were produced. The present owners purchased the property in 1999 and have recently operated a highly successful and award winning bed & breakfast business from the property. He enrolled at the Glasgow School of Art at the age of 15 and a year later joined John Hutchison in his architectural practice to train as a draughtsman. After completing his apprenticeship, he moved to Honeyman and Keppie in 1889. In 1890 he won the coveted Alexander Thomson Travelling Studentship for Public Design and with his prize of 60 decided to travel to Italy and Europe. This trip was to change his life, and he was to develop an individual style, influenced greatly by his experiences in Europe. Few designers can claim to have created a unique and individual style that is so instantly recognisable. Famous around the world, Charles Rennie Mackintosh was an architect who designed schools, offices, churches, tearooms and homes as well as a designer of furniture, metalwork and textiles. His distinctive style mixed together elements of the Scottish vernacular and the English Arts & Crafts tradition with the organic forms of Art Nouveau and a drive to be modern. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Artists Cottage really is a unique property that has been built with modern materials to a classic historic design. The house essentially consists of a 2 storey cube shaped building which contains all the principal rooms to which is attached what was a single storey cottage and courtyard/walled garden area. Mackintosh titled the drawings An Artists Cottage and Studio probably intending the building to be for himself and his wife Margaret MacDonald. The house stands in its own grounds of about 0.62 hectares (1.53 acres) which include many fine mature trees. There is a separate building including garages and stores. The Artists Cottage has been built with enormous attention to detail, both inside and outside, priority being given to the interpretation of Mackintosh s intentions, whilst taking full advantage of modern building methods and materials. Externally, the strong batter of the main walls rises to softly rounded parapets interrupted by contrasting verticals and deeply pierced window openings, all of which presents a design of much sculptural force. Most of the windows on the ground floor have been patterned with leaded glass from designs taken from a variety of Mackintosh sources to create a stunning effect. The landing window on the east elevation and the drawing room window on the south are particularly outstanding features. ACCOMMODATION GROUND FLOOR The accommodation comprises an entrance vestibule off which is a Cloakroom and separate WC. There is a spacious Dining Hall with wide lattice staircase and a tall east facing lead window. The sitting room has a large south facing bow window with a deep sill and a further window overlooking the courtyard secret garden. The kitchen is fully fitted and equipped with a range of modern wall and base storage units. There is a study area adjacent to the staircase. Steps from the Hallway lead down to the single storey cottage wing which provides further flexible accommodation in the shape of 3 bedrooms each with ensuite shower rooms, a further single bedroom and 2 utility rooms. FIRST FLOOR From the Dining Hall, the wide lattice staircase leads up to a large bright galleried landing with extensive fitted bookshelves/cabinets. A further staircase gives access to a roof terrace with fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding highland countryside.
