1 Emil Bach House 7415 N. Sheridan Rd. Just to the north, the Emil Bach House (1915) was designed as a compact urban home that turned inward to provide privacy for the family. Check out the historic designation plaque near the front gate. Who was this home s Prairie Style architect? Frank Lloyd Wright 2 Mundelein Center for the Fine and Performing Arts 1020 W. Sheridan Rd. Mundelein College (190), now part of Loyola University, built this Art Deco gem as the first selfcontained skyscraper college for women. What are the two women figures holding? Torch, Globe, Book Superdawg 66 N. Milwaukee Ave. Since the late 1940s, Superdawg s distinctive building, along with winking Maurie and Flaurie, has welcomed hungry Chicagoans. What big geometric shape, popular in roadside Mid-Century Modern architecture, is found on the building? Diamond 6 Amundsen High School 5110 N. Damen Ave. Built in 190, Amundsen High School was named for Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. What s his quote found above the main entrance? A brave man may fall but cannot yield. 7 Conrad Sulzer Regional Library 4455 N. Lincoln Ave. For the Sulzer Regional Library (1985), architects Hammond Beeby & Babka, who also designed the Harold Washington Library, were inspired by German Neo-Classical architecture. In the 1920s, as the Irving Park neighborhood was growing quickly, developers tried to attract tenants by making their buildings stand out. Basket of flowers 4 Riviera Motor Sales Company Building 5960 N. Broadway St. The Riviera Motor Sales building, along Edgewater s Auto Row, featured large plate glass and Venetian Gothic details. Ashland Ave. Resembling a massive Tudor castle, Lakeview High School was once the site of Illinois first township high school. Read the historic plaque at the main entrance. What year was the original township school built? 1874 5 Bohemian National Cemetery 5255 N. Pulaski Rd. North on Pulaski Avenue is the gatehouse to the Bohemian National Cemetery. Find the gatehouse s cornerstone to learn the year it was built. 189 10 Lincoln Trust and Savings Bank 94 N. Lincoln Ave. The old Lincoln Trust & Savings Bank (191) includes lots of classical details, including Ionic columns and triangular pediments. Walk south on Lincoln Ave. How many pediments can you find there?

11 DePaul Prep 6 N. California Ave. DePaul Prep was originally named for Father Francis Gordon, a Polish priest and founder of one of the country s largest foreign language newspapers. Look near the gym doors on California Ave. to find the initials of Father Gordon s religious order. What are they? CR (Congregation of the Resurrection) 15 Landmark s Century Centre Cinema 2828 N. Clark St. The Landmark s Century Centre Cinema (1925), just north on Clark St., is dripping with Spanish Baroqueinspired ornament. The building is covered in terra cotta, Latin for baked earth. Any color pigment could be added to the wet clay. What color is the terra cotta here? White 12 Schurz High School 601 N. Milwaukee Ave. In 1908, Jane Addams headed the Chicago school board that called for radical new school designs like Schurz High School. Inspired by the prairie, architect Dwight Perkins used unique Roman bricks to emphasize the horizontal lines in the building. Get up close. How would you describe their shape? Long and thin 16 Illinois Centennial Monument 150 W. Logan Blvd. In 1918, celebrating the 100th year of statehood, artist Evelyn Beatrice Longman was commissioned to sculpt a series of figures under the Illinois Centennial Monument. With wings on his shoes and his hat, one figure represents transportation. What two modes of travel is he holding? Train and steamship 1 Lorca Elementary School 21 N. Springfield Ave. Completed in 2010, Federico Garcia Lorca Elementary School, just north on Milwaukee Ave., was designed by SMNG-A Architects to include learning spaces with great views and lots of light. Look up at the third floor library on the corner. What materials are used here? Metal panels 14 Belmont Theater 165 W. Belmont Ave. Once upon a time you and,200 other movie fans could have seen these stars at the old Belmont Theater (1925). Look west on Belmont Ave. How many floors high are the building s twisty, helical columns? 17 Ashland Avenue bridge 2220 N. Ashland Ave. The Ashland Avenue bridge house (196) includes beautiful Art Deco style bas relief stone panels that tell stories of the era in which it was built. Milwaukee Ave. The 1910 bridge over Milwaukee Ave. originally had a central support column between traffic lanes. Division St. The architects of the Division Street Russian and Turkish Baths (1906) designed the building with classical Greek Revival details. Look east on Division St. Below each second story window, you ll find triglyphs, an ornamental vertical bundle of three channels. How many total triglyphs can you spot? 20 2 St. John Cantius School 1010 W. Chicago Ave. The old St. John Cantius parish school (190) is now home to the Chicago Academy of the Arts. The building features Baroque era inspired details. How would you describe what s surrounding the second floor windows? Quoins (pronounced coins ); large stones that stick out from the brick 24 Poetry Foundation 61 W. Superior St. Architect John Ronan designed the Poetry Foundation building (2011) as a series of interior and exterior rooms. Walk north on Dearborn St. to see the metal screen surrounding the building and courtyard. How would you describe this metal? Perforated and corrugated 21 Polish National Alliance Building (Studio Gang Architects) 1520 W. Division St. In the 1920s more than 250,000 Polish Americans called this neighborhood home. For many new immigrants, the Polish National Alliance (198), just east on Division St., helped them get established in Chicago. What three letters (PNA s initials in Polish) can be found over the door? ZNP 22 St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cathedral 228 W. Rice St. St. Nicholas Ukrainian Cathedral s green pear domes (a flat variation of onion domes) have towered above the neighborhood since 191. Walk a block north on Oakley St. How many pear domes can you spot on the church s roof? 25 London Guarantee and Accident Building 85 E. Wacker Dr. In 192, this pair of mythical creatures watched over Michigan Ave. and the treasures insured by London Guarantee & Accident Co. Look carefully at the building. What are these creatures? Griffin (part lion, part eagle) 26 Chicago Cultural Center 78 E. Washington St. The grand Chicago Cultural Center was originally constructed as the Chicago Public Library. Its Beaux Arts style design contains ornament inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. Look up at the frieze, a horizontal band of ornament near the roofline. What animal can you spot there? Lions 1

State St. New methods of steel skeleton construction allowed the Reliance Building s frame to rise during the summer of 1894 at a rate of about one floor per day, shocking Chicagoans. And inexpensive glass meant windows could be huge. What type of windows are the tall, skinny ones seen throughout the building? Double hung windows 28 First Baptist Congregational Church 161 W. Washington Blvd. First Baptist Congregational (1869) is filled with Gothic Revival details. Over the front doors, you ll find a circular foil with arcs that divide up the circle. How many parts are found inside this foil? (trefoil) 29 Inland Steel Building 0 W. Monroe St. Architects knew the Inland Steel Building, designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, was special when it was built in 1957. But it s rare for any building to be recognized as significant so soon after construction. Look at the silver plaque on Monroe St. What year was it named an architectural landmark? 1960 0 The Rookery 209 S. LaSalle St. When the Rookery Building was constructed in 1888, it was one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world. The offices of architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root even had prime views of Lake Michigan. How many balconies project out from the building? 1 Railway Exchange Building 224 S. Michigan Ave. The Chicago Architecture Foundation, inside the Railway Exchange Building (1904), has Chicago s largest D printed model. Step inside to see it. What s the tallest northernmost building on the model? John Hancock Tower 2 Our Lady of Sorrows National Shrine 121 W. Jackson Blvd. In 1956, the Pope granted the title of Basilica to Our Lady of Sorrows National Shrine (1902), conferring special privileges on one of the grandest churches in the city. Look at the plaque near the front door. Which Pope named the building a basilica? Pope Pius XII Old Cook County Hospital 185 W. Harrison St. The Old Cook County Hospital (1914) once welcomed and treated thousands of new immigrants that could not otherwise afford care. Look at the terra cotta and stone ornament on the building s front. What figure and animal can you spot tucked in the Beaux Arts style facade? Angels and lions 4 Glessner House 1800 S. Prairie Ave. 50 years ago, the Chicago Architecture Foundation was born at 18th and Prairie Ave. Citizens came together to save the historic Glessner House (1886) from destruction. How many voussoirs (wedgeshaped stones) make up the stone arch over the Prairie Ave. door? 15

5 R. R. Donnelly & Sons Company, Calumet Plant 50 E. Cermak Rd. In the 1920s, many of these were printed here (once the largest US printing plant). Walk north on Martin Luther King Dr. to Cermak Ave. to the R.R. Donnelley & Sons Calumet Plant. What animal, seen in terra cotta near the front door, guards this building? Horse 6 Cermak/Blue Island Sustainable Streetscape 1450 W. Cermak Rd. Dubbed the greenest street in the country, the Cermak/Blue Island Sustainable Streetscape was designed to reduce our carbon footprint. Look at the sign on the northeast corner. What is the name of the device used to light the streetscape at night? Hybrid light fixture 7 Little Village Academy 2620 S. Lawndale Ave. Just south on Lawndale Ave., architects from Ross Barney + Jankowski designed the Little Village Academy (1996) with cheerful colors, materials and textures. The curved stair tower even contains a three-story vertical sundial. Look at the sidewalk at the entrance. What symbol can you spot there? Sunburst 8 McCormick Tribune Campus Center at IIT 201 S. State St. Superimposed on the State St. entrance of the McCormick Tribune Campus Center, you ll find a 20- foot high image of IIT dean, professor and architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. His face is made up of tiny symbols and figures. What symbol can you spot in the bottom left corner of the glass? Light bulb 9 Bridgeport Arts Center 1200 W. 5th St. Originally a warehouse for Albert Fick and Co., a supplier of hotel and restaurant goods, the Bridgeport Arts Center (1911) has adaptively reused the train shed attached to the main building. How many brick arches can you find on the east side of this train shed? 1 40 Union Stockyards Gate 900 W. Exchange Ave. Before any of their famous skyscrapers, architects Daniel Burnham and John Wellborn Root designed the Union Stockyards Gate (1879) near Halsted and Exchange Sts. Cattle, sheep and pigs were once driven through the limestone gate. Read the sign next to the gate. How many head of livestock could be held inside? 100,000 41 City Hyde Park 5105 S. Harper Ave. The architects at Studio Gang had some geometric fun with the balconies on the south side of City Hyde Park apartments (2016) across the street. Look closely. What shape are these balconies? Parallelograms 42 Gerald Ratner Athletics Center at the University of Chicago 550 S. Ellis Ave. Designed to mimic the flying buttresses found in the Neo-Gothic architecture of the U of C Campus, the Ratner Athletics Center uses mast and cables to suspend the roof above the swimming pool. At the corner of Ellis and 55th St., how many masts hold this roof in tension? 12

4 Museum of Science and Industry E. 57th St. and Cornell Ave. The west side of the Museum of Science and Industry (189) features four caryatids, columns designed to look like female figures. Copied after ancient classical forms in Greece, caryatids hold up the roof with their heads. How would you describe their posture? They have one knee gently bent 44 Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago 915 E. 60th St. Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, architects of the future Obama Presidential Center, designed the 2012 Logan Center for the Arts at the U of C (60th/Drexel) with lots of daylight. The saw-tooth roofs let soft north light into classrooms and studios. How many triangular saw-tooth roofs can you spot? 10 47 Gary Comer Youth Center 711 S. South Chicago Ave. Home of the South Shore Drill Team, the Gary Comer Youth Center (2006) is the most colorful building along S. South Chicago Ave. Architect John Ronan designed the exterior with fiber cement panels that can be switched out if ever damaged. How many different panel shades of red can you find? 4 48 New Regal Theater (Avalon Theater) 79th S. Stony Island Ave. The historic New Regal Theater (now the Avalon Theater), east on 79th St., once transported moviegoers to another land with its Moorish-Revival style architecture. Look at the street level on the north side of the building. How many ogee arches (arches that curve in two directions) can you spot? 5 45 940 W. 6rd St. 940 W. 6rd St. The 1870 Illinois Constitution prohibited separate branch banks until 1987 when the law was fully repealed. This is why Chicagoans built so many grand neighborhood banks, including one just east on 6rd St., inspired by a Greek temple. What was the name of this 1926 bank? West Lawn State Bank 46 South Shore Cultural Center 7059 S. South Shore Dr. In 1916 architects Marshall & Fox designed the South Shore Country Club (now South Shore Cultural Center) to recall a grand Renaissance palace along the Italian coast. How many towers are found on top of the main building? 49 Original Rainbow Cone 92 S. Western Ave. A journey down to Florida inspired the Original Rainbow Cone s architectural design. Cottage Grove Ave. If you were standing here in 1881, you would not have found a bus shelter.
