Military roles during World War 1, represented here ON LAND Private: A soldier of the lowest military rank Gunner: Equivalent to the rank of private. Operating the heavy artillery pieces, they were integral to the First World War from firing devastating bombardments to cutting wire and countering enemy batteries Trooper: Equivalent to the rank of private in a regiment with a cavalry tradition. Lance Corporal: Below the rank of corporal typically the lowest non-commissioned officer. The lance corporal was a team leader (4-5 men). Lance Bombardier: Equivalent to Lance Corporal in some branches of the army Corporal: Leader of a squad (consisting of 2 teams) Lance Sergeant: A corporal acting in the rank of a sergeant. They could be demoted by their commanding officer, unlike a full sergeant who could only be demoted by court martial Sergeant: The sergeant was in command of a platoon of about 30 men. Company Sergeant: Towards the end of the war a number of sergeants had to command entire companies. Companies consisted of 80-250 soldiers (three six platoons) and were usually commanded by a captain or a major Second Lieutenants: Second Lieutenants also in command of the platoon led their men on assaults. Because they were first over the top they had a very high casualty rate. Captains and Lieutenants: A Captain or a Lieutenant usually filled the role of Adjutant (in charge of battalion administration). They also undertook the duties of Quartermaster (responsible for stores and transport). Riflemen: The rifleman class was the base of each and team and the back-bone of any assault. Their movements could be a little slowed down because of their heavy rifles. AT SEA Able Seaman: A seaman with at least two years experience at sea Master (mercantile marine): Equivalent to captain - 2
This booklet contains the names, details where known and supporting documents of the World War One fallen listed on the St. Bartholomew s Memorial. They are produced in the order of the dates on which they died. The names of those commemorated here begin on PAGE 4 There are a number of names for which we have no details. We do not now know who they were, where, or when they died, or their connection to St. Bartholomew s. We would love to hear from anyone who can shed light on these poor men. Their names are found at the end of the list on PAGE 6. Details entries begin on PAGE 7: The information here has been taken from lists held by Richard Travell, Kent Archeology, and from documents held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as follows: Grave Registration Reports: Standard forms which detail graves for which the Commission is responsible within a particular burial ground. They provide basic details of the individuals, such as name, service number, rank, regiment, unit and date of death, and are listed in Plot, Row and Grave order. Registers: Produced by the Commission on a cemetery-by-cemetery or memorial-bymemorial basis, and eventually ran to 1,500 volumes. They contain an entry for each individual, with details of their rank, regiment, unit and date of death. Many of the entries also include additional information such as next of kin details Burial Returns: Recorded details of individuals who were originally buried in smaller or isolated cemeteries, but who, at a later date, were exhumed and reburied in war cemeteries. The concentration of cemeteries allowed otherwise unmaintainable graves to be moved into established war grave cemeteries where the Commission could ensure proper commemoration. Headstone Schedules: These documents provide details of what was actually inscribed on an individual s headstone. Their main purpose was to help manage the enormous programme of headstone production and engraving the Commission embarked on in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. Panel Lists: Lists of individuals commemorated on memorials or screen walls and reflect the details and layout inscribed on the panels. Individuals are commemorated in this way when their loss has been officially declared by their relevant service but there is no known burial for the individual, or in circumstances where graves cannot be individually marked, or where the grave site has become inaccessible and unmaintainable. - 3

B Ashpole, of the 7th Beds. Regiment, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Ashpole, of West End Kempston, which took place in France on January 19th. The Captain of his company, writing to his parents says: The Germans had exploded a mine that evening about 5pm, and followed this with a heavy bombardment of our line. Your son apparently entered the mouth of a mine shaft to take shelter and encountered a rush of gas which overcame him, and he was unable to get out. Two NCOs in his platoon pluckily entered the shaft in spire of the gas, and with some considerable difficulty succeeded in getting him out, but it was unfortunately too late. His loss will be much felt in the Company, where he was exceedingly popular, and you have our sincere sympathy in the sad circumstances. Sgt H Hassall, also of the 7th Beds, writes It was with deep regret I heard of the death of your son. He was a very goo clad all through his career in the Army. I always found him to be a willing worker no matter what was required of him, and also as clean as soldier as anyone could wish. Only half an hour before the mine exploded I was talking to him about Bedford, as I come from the town myself; also Kempston in a way is connected with me, as a sister of mine is in the Schools there. The two NCOs were Lance Corporal A Blanchard and Corporal J Ivory who were both award the Distinguished Conduct Medal for the rescue. - 16
