Racinowski, Editor/Manager Popular St. Barbara Teacher Retires One of St. Barbara s most popular teachers decided to retire at the end of the 2014 school year. Mrs. Phyllis LoPiccolo came to St. Barbara School in 1987. For many of those 27 years she taught third grade. She loved that grade level because she also was able to prepare the children for their First Holy Communion. After retiring from full-time teaching in 1997, Mrs. LoPiccolo stayed on at the school in a part-time position as the Spanish teacher. It was during this time that she also began the Fine Arts program at the school. She believed that city children should be exposed to the opera, symphony and the Art Institute. The fine arts program has grown to include the annual fine arts fair showcasing the art of St. Barbara students. Today, the art of students adorn the hallways of the school. Mrs. LoPiccolo also filled in when teachers left mid-year and did substitute teaching. Mrs. LoPiccolo returned to full time teaching responsibilities in 2008. This time she accepted the position as a fourth grade teacher and science leader. She continued to be instrumental in the development of the fine arts program as well as the science curriculum. Mrs. LoPiccolo has been an outstanding teacher. She understood that children learn best by doing. Her classroom was always a busy (and sometimes messy) place, but her children learned and they loved it! Nothing was ever taught in isolation. From poetry to reading to science to math, Mrs. LoPiccolo s world always had a connection. Mrs. LoPiccolo will be missed, but somehow we know that she will still be involved in St. Barbara School. Happy retirement Mrs. LoPiccolo! The Bridgeport Citizens Group encourages all Bridgeport residents to find out by coming out to the CAPS meeting, Tuesday, August 12, at 6:30 pm, at the 9th District Station. Building safe neighborhoods begins with taking responsibility for your own safety and protecting your personal property. Building safe neighborhoods also involves working with each other and with our police officers. Many issues raised by residents attending CAPS are worked on by BCG members through phone trees, research and watch groups. At each beat meeting CAPS officers and the BCG discuss a topic of interest to help residents build a safer community. The Bridgeport Citizens Group is a grassroots organization that collects data and helps residents find solutions to those issues raised at meetings. The 9th District Police station is located at 3120 S. Halsted. CAPS meeting for Beats 913 and 915 are held on the second Tuesday of each month. -PARTISANARTISAN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER SERVING BRIDGEPORT,, BACKB ACK OF THE YARDS,, CANARYVILLEC ANARYVILLE,, ARMOURA RMOUR SQUARE,, CHINATOWNC HINATOWN AND MCKINLEY PARK!! Mohandas E. Gandhi THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE Armour School The Hidden Gem of Bridgeport - News and Registration Armour School is the hidden gem of Bridgeport at 950 West 33 Place. Founded in 1901, it has been serving the community continuously for 113 years. We are situated on an idyllic campus-style park that encompasses two buildings-- a primary school for grades pre-k-2, and our beautiful Main building, with its castle-like exterior and impressive hallways, for students in grades 3 through 8. We are a neighborhood school, and more importantly, a family school that has seen multiple generations of families pass through our halls. All of our teachers are highly qualified in possession of State of Illinois Educator License with 85% of them with at least one or multiple master s degrees. The teachers are experienced and dedicated to the parents and students of Bridgeport. The Principal, Shelley Lugo- Cordova, and several other teachers have dedicated most of their career to our Armour School families and students for more than 20 years. Our school day begins at 7:45am with a drop off time of 7:30AM to accommodate our parents with childcare needs. Armour School provides students with a high quality and rigorous education. All teachers attend numerous professional development opportunities that bring new research based instructional strategies that are implemented in all learning areas in the classrooms. Armour School focuses on preparing students to be college and career ready through full implementation of the Common Core State Standards. We strive to create a rigorous, college and career culture. All students are actively engaged in reading and writer s workshop, active math classes, engaging hand on science classes, physical education more than the mandated CPS required time (at least twice a week), technology, and art during the school day. Technology is a major component in all classrooms and subjects starting in pre-school. Students learn the most up to date computer programs that will enhance their educational goals. There are two full computer labs, three class sets of ipads and 1 set of chrome books for student use. The science lab allows students to actively engage in the scientific process through hands-on interactive activities that are aligned to the New Generation Science Standards. All teachers implement lessons aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Algebra is offered to eligible students in grade 8 providing them the opportunity to take the algebra exam in 8th grade instead of waiting until high school. Community partnerships are a vital component of the school. Through community partnerships students have had access to international music concerts, performances by Chicago s Lyric Opera, International Music Foundations Concerts, and appearances by theater groups addressing important issues in the students lives. The Chicago Chamber Musicians provides music class to grades 2, 3, & 4. We have a very active sports program, tutoring, homework help, art, and through our partnership with the CYC (Chicago Youth Center ) we were able to provide dance, karate and other fun activities. Our other partners include CIS, (Communities in Schools Chicago) who provide cultural and other opportunities for our children through field trips, speakers and performances, and Target, who not only remodeled our two Media Centers, but continues to provide literacy support through the Children s Literacy Initiative program. Registration will take place August 20th - 31st, from 8:30a.m.-12:00p.m. Students entering grades pre-school, kindergarten and 6th must have a physical exam and proof of all required immunizations.all students entering kindergarten must have a vision exam. All students entering kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grade must have a dental exam. Armour School provides a half day 3 and 4 year old preschool. All kindergarten students receive a full day of instruction. Armour School does not have a uniform policy but has a Dress Code Policy for 2014-2015. Shirts shall be worn inside slacks at all times by all students. All clothing items must be of an approved color from the common color selections presented in this dress code policy. THE MAN WHO ADVERTISES HIS BUSINESS HAS ONE "!" - Page 3 Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago Back to School Celebration Greeting Ad Deadline is Monday at 5PM Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago (BGCC) has partnered with The Illinois Currency Exchange Charitable Foundation (ICECF) in their annual Back to School Celebration. The event was held at the Louis L. Valentine Club, 3400 S. Emerald, Chicago on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. During the event, 1,500 backpacks were distributed to underprivileged children. Each kit contained age-appropriate school supplies for BGCC members ages 6-18 years old that will be heading back to school in the upcoming weeks. Our Annual Back to School Celebration, supported by The Illinois Currency Exchange Charitable Foundation, provides our Club members with desperately needed school supplies and backpacks. Providing these basic resources prepares our Club members for the new school year, with renewed confidence, and more likely to achieve success, stated Alicia T. Vega, Vice President of Youth Development. The school supply donation comes as part of the ICECF's Back 2 School program. Now in its 10th year, the annual program has donated in excess of 3,000,000 school supplies to over 104,000 students across Illinois. In 2014 alone, ICECF estimates it will provide over 28,000 underprivileged students with 850,000 free school supplies. The program is the largest of its kind in the state of Illinois. While the Back 2 School program is a significant part of what we do, it is also an extremely vital part of the academic year for thousands of students throughout the state, added Matthew Kurtzman, Executive Director of ICECF. Partnerships such as this one with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago help us to make sure that the Back 2 School kits are going to those who truly can benefit from them.
