unit intrductin: This unit examines the prfessinal practice f landscape architecture and architecture thrugh lectures, seminars, wrkshps and prjects centered n a prfessinal mentring prcess, the mentr scheme facilitated by ALVA staff, the Australian Institute f Landscape Architects (AILA), the Ryal Australian Institute f Architects (RAIA) and the prfessinal landscape architectural and architectural practices in Perth. Fr the design student, the unit will fcus n bridging the gap between the educatinal experience f design, and the abilities t practice the disciplines in business. Specifically the prcess f the unit will fllw thrugh the varius stages f practicing landscape architecture and architecture frm prject prcurement thrugh t cntract dcumentatin, prject and practice management t prject cmpletin. unit utcmes: Students will develp: Familiarity with the prcedures f landscape architectural and architectural practice, the realizatin and prductin f managed and designed landscapes and buildings as exemplified in bth large and small practices in Perth handling lcal, natinal and internatinal prjects frm bth the public and the private sectr. A basic understanding f ffice management, cntracts and the legal respnsibilities and bligatins required fr the practice f landscape architecture r architecture. An understanding f the institutinal cntext which gverns the practice f landscape architecture and architecture including natinal, reginal and lcal planning plicy and prcedures, envirnmental law and an appreciatin f the nature f the allied disciplines and specialist fields f knwledge. Experience in the frmulatin and management f prject design teams, prject research and prfessinal ral presentatin. Where pssible, pprtunities fr further mentrship and pssible wrk experience and emplyment with the prfessinal ffices. unit cntent: The unit is fcused upn the verall practice f landscape architecture and architecture in the wrkplace. One f the intentins f the unit is t enable students t develp sme familiarity with the day t day prcedures f prfessinal practice, and t gain a basic understanding f the peratinal cntext f practice. T this end the unit spends sme time establishing a fundamental understanding f hw ffices are rganized and run, and hw prjects are prcured and managed including prcedures fr bidding, cntract frmulatin, dcumentatin and administratin thrugh t prject cmpletin. The rle and respnsibilities f the prfessinal bdies respnsible fr and affiliated with the practices f landscape architecture and architecture are presented. Fr the landscape students, this unit is run in cnjunctin with Prfessinal Dcuments unit which prvides greater detail the in the preparatin f landscape prfessinal dcuments including dcumentatin plans, typical cnstructin details and written technical specificatins assciated with the tender and cnstructin f landscape wrks. Fr Architecture Students the unit is cmplimentary t ARCH 5560, Prfessinal Practice taught in 2007 by Sara Stace. While every effrt has been made t avid redundancy in either unit, students shuld be prepared fr sme crssver in tpics acrss the tw units. Each unit will deal with different aspects f cmmn tpics such as the registratin prcess, cntracts, and cdes f practice. The weekly structure f the unit is based arund the ALVA Mentr Scheme. In this scheme in which a wide range f practices in Perth participate, small student grups are assigned t a mentr practice, and usually t an individual in that practice. Students meet with their mentr ffices n fur scheduled ccasins during the semester t further investigate a schedule f structured tpics presented in class via lectures, seminars and wrkshps. Fr example, typical ffice emplyment prcedures will be utlined in class, and students will then investigate, dcument and present back t class the specific practices emplyed by their mentr and their respective ffice. Particular emphasis is placed upn teamwrk in this unit and t that end tw sessins have been dedicated t frming teams, the prcess f wrking in teams and the functining f teams. Gd teamwrk in Architecture and Landscape Architecture is essential t the successful executin f prjects, bth within the practitiners metrplitan ffice as well was in the brader cnsultancy and cnstructin team. 28 February 2007 Dear Office Mentrs: Subject: Prfessinal Practice Office Visits Office Mentr Scheme Thank yu fr participating in the Office Visits Prgram fr this year s Prfessinal Practice unit in Landscape Architecture & Architecture. Student crdinatrs f each grup will be in cntact with yur ffice in the next few days t cnfirm the time f the first meeting. Fur students have been allcated t yur practice: they will intrduce themselves n their first visit. Where pssible, we wuld appreciate if the times fr the subsequent three visits culd be scheduled within the Wednesday afternn allcated time slts fr this unit. We understand hwever that this will nt always be pssible. There are tw assessable cmpnents specifically derived frm the mentr scheme cmpnent f this unit. The first is a shrt written reprt f each meeting t be submitted in the week fllwing each visit t the ffice. Each grup will have the pprtunity t deliver this shrt reprt live at sme pint in the term as preparatin fr the majr cmpnent. unit rules, plicies & regulatins: Students will need t be aware f the Plagiarism and Assignment Extensin Plicies, as utlined in the Faculty f Architecture, Landscape & Visual Level Guide-bks. With respect t the latter, extensins will nt be allwed except n grunds f sickness r persnal prblems. Extensins are applied fr using the fficial Extensin frm available frm the frnt ffice, and presented t the Sub-Dean Ms Kate Hislp befre the submissin date, accmpanied by an explanatin in writing. The bject f these plicies is t ensure that all students are treated fairly, and that submissin date schedules, designed t prduce rdered and prfessinal wrk patterns fr students, are nt disrupted. The specific relevant faculty plicies include: Submissin f assignments FALVA Extensin plicy * (See ALVA website) FALVA plicy n late wrk * (See ALVA website) FALVA plicy n digital submissins * (see ALVA website) Academic Miscnduct/plagiarism FALVA plicy detailed belw * (See ALVA website) Plicy n Academic Miscnduct Faculty f Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts Academic Miscnduct: What is it? Academic miscnduct includes plagiarism, cllusin and ther frms f cheating. Plagiarism ccurs when smene disguises r misrepresents the authrship r wrk and claims it as his r her wn. It can ccur in varius frms: (i) presenting, part r whle f anther student's essay, design prject r artwrk as ne's wn; (ii) cpying phrases, sentences r passages frm a published surce (usually an article r a bk) withut acknwledging this by qutatin marks and a reference; (iii) substantially cpying design elements r images frm ther design prjects r artwrks, such as t misapprpriate and misrepresent the substance, strategy r persnal expressin f the riginal design prject r artwrk; (iii) presenting in yur wn wrds an idea, argument r interruptin frm anther surce, withut indicating the surce by means f a reference. INSERT REFERENCES WHEN USING OTHER PEOPLE'S IDEAS. What are the penalties? Plagiarism strikes at the heart f ethical schlarship, and the Schl has grwn increasingly cncerned abut plagiarism in student essays. In additin t being a frm f fraud, plagiarism negates the value f essays, designs r artwrks as a means f develping independent thught, analysis, design strategy r creative expressin. If the Schl finds that yur wrk includes intentinal plagiarism the minimum penalty is that the essay, design prject r artwrk will be failed. Unintentinal plagiarism will als be penalised. The Faculty f Architecture, Landscape & Visual Arts views Plagiarism very seriusly and substantial r repeated plagiarism may result in a student's failing the curse r, in extreme cases, being expelled frm the University. The defense "but I have dne this fr ther departments r teachers" is unacceptable - it is rather like the driver wh, when caught speeding, cmplains that (s)he hasn't been caught befre. Fr further infrmatin n regulatins fr student cnduct and discipline, including penalty prvisins and appeals prtcls, refer t The Amended Statute N. 17: Student 20

Discipline. (www.uwa.edu.au/students/ data/page/19919/statute_17_regulatins.pdf) Hw t avid plagiarism: (i) Essay Writing The best way t avid plagiarism in essay writing is t get int the habit f distinguishing yur wn wrk frm that by ther peple. We assume that unreferenced wrk is yur wn, s make sure that phrases and sentences that are nt yur wn are in qutatin marks and given precise references, and that ideas and arguments that are nt yur wn are prperly referenced. In cases f cncepts r facts that are widely used r knwn this may nt be necessary fr example "liberals believe in the imprtance f individual freedm" r "Australia has six states". T avid accidental plagiarism, ensure that the ntes yu use t prepare yur essay clearly identify qutatins and have full references. Hw t reference? There are tw cmmnly used methds f referencing: One, smetimes called the Harvard systems, enables yu t signal the authrship f a qutatin r an idea in the text, with the full reference appearing at the end f the essay. Fllwing the qutatin r idea drawn frm anther surce yu shuld insert in brackets the surname f the authr, the date f publicatin and, in cases f a direct qutatin r where an idea is dealt with in sme detail in yur surce, the pages number(s). Sme examples f hw Harvard references appear in the text are: (a) (Berlin, 1969: 33) in the case f a bk (b) (Rawls, 1984: 37) in the case f a chapter in an edited bk (c) (Barry, 1990: 513) in the case f an article frm a jurnal These references refer t the precise publicatin details set ut in a list f references at the end f the essay, as fllws: (a) Berlin, Isaiah (1969) Fur Essays n Liberty, Oxfrd: Oxfrd University Press (b) Rawls, Jhn (1984) 'The Right and the Gd Cntrasted', In Michael Sandel (ed.) Liberalism and its Critics, New Yrk: New Yrk University Press. (c) Barry, Brian (1990) 'Hw Nt t Defend Liberal Institutins', British Jurnal f Plitical Science 20: 1, pp 1-14. In this system yu wuld nly use ftntes r endntes t add supplementary infrmatin t the argument in yur essay. Anther system, smetimes knwn as the Oxfrd system, uses ftntes r endntes, nt nly fr supplementary infrmatin, but als fr references t surces. The first reference t a surce is in full, the secnd and subsequent reference in an abbreviated frm. There is a variety f acceptable means r presentatin; we suggest the fllwing: (a) Isaiah Berlin, Fur Essays n Liberty, Oxfrd, Oxfrd University Press, 1969 (b) Jhn Rawls, 'The Right and the Gd Cntrasted', in Michael Sandel (ed.) Liberalism and its Critics, New Yrk, New Yrk University Press, 1984. (c) Brian Barry, 'Hw Nt t Defend Liberal Institutins,' British Jurnal f Plitical Science vl. 20 n 1, 1990 pp l-14 Subsequent references shuld appear in an abbreviated frm. lbid. refers t reference in the previus ftnte, with the page number if it is different frm the ne previusly cited. Op. cit. fllwing an authr' s name refers t a reference t a wrk that has already been cited. Add a date t distinguish different wrks by the same authr (eg. Rawls p. cit., 1984 p.37.) If yu use the Oxfrd system yu will als need t prvide a full bibligraphy at the end f the essay. There many guides available which give mre details f these referencing systems. (ii) Design Prjects and Artwrk It is cmmn practice t make use f surce material such as ther design prjects, r styles f artwrk. Hwever, in rder t avid the perceptin f plagiarism, yu are encuraged t clearly identify the surce material as a cmpnent f yur presentatin. This may be dne thrugh a cmbinatin f images and text. The cllaging r mntaging f apprpriating elements in rder t create a new wrk is an acceptable practice, hwever the substantial apprpriatin f anther wrk, such that the meaning and intent f the riginal has been brrwed withut reference, is unacceptable, and cnstitutes plagiarism.
