Caterham is a popular commuter and market town in the Tandridge District of Surrey. The town is administratively divided into Caterham on the Hill and Caterham Valley. Church Walk Shopping Centre is a small shopping mall situated opposite Caterham railway station. Two of the major supermarkets have a presence including a Waitrose store. William Hill Interiors are a well-known local furniture supplier who has been established in Caterham since 1948. The North Downs Way, part of a national trail network is popular with walkers and passes very close to the town. This ancient pilgrim route passes from Farnham in the West, through Surrey and all the way to the Kent Coast at Dover. Within a few miles of the town centre you will find wild commons and woods including Old Park Wood and Happy Valley. The Viewpoint at Gravelly Hill is a particular local favourite enjoying far reaching views to the South Downs. Caterham has a sports centre, tennis courts at Queens Park and various golf courses close by, including The Surrey National Golf Course which is within three miles. Football is well catered for with local teams of all ages. Caterham Cricket Club now share facilities with The Old Caterhamians Rugby Football Club which was established in 1928. There is also a skate park called Skaterham built on the grounds of the former Guards Chapel. A community arts centre and theatre are situated in the Old Caterham Barracks. In the town centre the Miller Centre is a theatre and community centre that puts on regular nonprofessional shows, films and is host to a number of clubs and community groups. Caterham has its own annual carnival first started in 2009, a library and a radio station, called Ridge Radio. There is a good mixture of independent and state schools in the area. The two most notable private schools are Caterham School, a co-educational school for pupils aged 3 18 years and Oakhyrst Grange School, a preparatory school for boys and girls aged 4 11 years. De Stafford is the main state secondary school.
