EXHIBITING SECOND HALF CAREER ARTISTS Curated by Preston Fitzgerald With the support of Dana Lazarus Cass, Aliya Brijnath, Jenny Marshall and Hanna Culhane The Second Half Foundation is an independent not for profit social enterprise that focuses on the development and delivery of innovative services that reach and support people in the second half of their lives. The Second Half Centre provides a place where people can come and enhance the quality of their lives through learning, volunteering and connecting with their community. With this exhibition we have brought together a very unique group of artists, who had varied careers during the first part of their lives and have now retrained as artists.we believe this group is a wonderful example of transformation and discovery and hope it will provide inspiration for people who are searching for new ways to develop in the second half of their lives. DANA LAZARUS-CASS built a successful career as a director of Image Bank and owner of Focus Gallery. In the second half of her life, Dana completed a degree in Ceramics from University of Westminster at Harrow and has gone on to exhibit her own ceramic works in several group shows. JACQUELINE CLARKE spent many years working as a food stylist until jewellery courses at Edinburgh College of Art and later Kensington & Chelsea College turned her career around. Her jewellery designs in sterling sliver, gold and glass are essential forms abstracted from nature - familiar objects found while walking in the woods and along the seashore. SAM FOGG is a specialist in the art of the European Middle Ages with departments also focusing on Islamic and Indian art. Following a friend s suggestion to attend a life drawing class, painting has opened a whole new chapter for him. He paints portraits, landscapes and interiors --- but still life is where he found the discipline to improve his eye and practice. LUCILLE LEWIN Rather than resting on her laurels after building and selling the Whistles fashion retail chain, Lucille went back to college (City Lit in Holborn) to study ceramics. Her ceramic pieces are intricate, delicate, glazed several times to deliver a strong sense of the sea coast where she spends much of her time now. SCOTT MEAD - Scott studied photography under renowned photographers William Eggleston and Emmet Gowin in the mid 1970's, prior to his banking career, and exhibited at that time. In 2010, several years after leaving investment banking, during which photography took a back seat, Scott had a solo exhibition at Hamiltons, London. Scott's work was selected and exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He was profiled in the BBC Culture Show in connection with his selection in 2012. JACQUE PAVLOSKY is a glass artist and kiln formed glass and sculpture tutor. Through the remarkable medium of glass she has come to explore a wider range of themes: architecture, nature, horses, as well as an ongoing exploration of the human condition and form. Jacque has recently set up her own studio with specialised equipment for working in glass and sculpture. CATHRYN SHILLING first studied glass in Connecticut following a successful graphic design career. After further study in London, she has gone on to create a large and varied collection of glass pieces using bold and experimental techniques like skilfully combining the fluidity and transparency of glass with metals and ceramic transfers. All of these artists are generously donating 50% of their proceeds to the Second Half Foundation with the exception of Sam Fogg, who is donating 100%.
