New homes for Norton New homes for heroes

About the site Norton Barracks were built as a home for the Worcestershire Regiment in 1877. The War Department purchased the 20.5 acre site for 3,500 ( 300,000 today) and spent a further 65,000 (more than 3m today) on the imposing barracks buildings. Since the barracks were sold in the 1980s the Worcestershire Regiment s archive was kept in an old Army building on the site. The archive was moved to the new Territorial Army HQ in Worcester city centre in Spring 2011, ending the Army s presence at Norton and making the site surplus to requirements. Most of the former barracks site is now occupied by housing and many of the new roads that were built The Napoleon Tree To mark progress on-site, and to commemorate the special link between Norton Barracks and important landmarks in British military history, Rooftop will be installing a plaque near the Napoleon Tree upon completion. reflect the link to battles that the Worcestershire s fought in. These include: Gallipoli Drive Lt. Herbert James won a Victoria Cross during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915 Cambrai Drive Battle of Cambrai November/December 1917 Gazala Road Battle of Gazala, fought in the Western Desert, 26 May-21 June 1942 Kohima Drive Battle of Kohima, fought in Northern Burma, April 1944 Salamanca Drive Battle of Salamanca, 22 July 1812 The development of affordable housing Rooftop Housing Group, in partnership with Wychavon District Council, is working on a development that will provide ten new affordable homes on the site for returning servicemen and women, as well as those who have retired from the Armed Forces. The scheme forms part of Rooftop s commitment to the Worcestershire Armed Forces Community Covenant. The site is one fifth of an acre and was surplus to requirements by the Ministry of Defence. Using this land to support service personnel seemed the most appropriate use, considering it is the last remaining part of the former barracks. Timescales Work began on-site Winter 2013 and completion is scheduled for Autumn 2014.

Shared ownership is a great alternative for those on a regular income who want to buy a home but cannot afford to buy outright. It works by allowing buyers to get a mortgage to purchase a percentage of a property and then pay rent on the remaining share. You are able to: own part of your home and pay rent on the other part have a monthly mortgage and rent which can work out cheaper than buying outright, and sometimes not much more than renting buy more shares or move if you want to only buy what you can afford so you don t overstretch yourself financially Almost anyone can apply to become a shared owner, as long as: you are able to afford the cost of the rent and the mortgage your joint household income is less than 60,000 you are able to secure a mortgage with an approved lender you have a minimum cash deposit between 5% and 10%, depending on the lender of the mortgage We give priority to: Ministry of Defence Personnel, first time buyers, our existing residents and residents from other housing associations.
