Welcome Address Dear Colleagues, As the development and availability of new targeted therapies boosted important evolutions in the field of clinical immunology, many of us realized the need for more intensive interaction and collaboration not only with fundamental immunologists and with industrial partners but also with our academic colleagues from other organ-specific disciplines than our own. Therefore, we initiated in 2004 an European Working Group of leading academic physician-scientists involved in clinical immunology, rheumatology, dermatology, gastroenterology, transplantation immunology, Our global aim is to create a forum for informal but intensive interaction and networking between translational immunologists from different organ-specific disciplines. The keys of our organization are: Focus on translational immunology with direct clinical relevance Emphasis on cross-disciplinary interactions and projects Strong interaction between academia and pharmaceutical partners, especially biotech companies focusing on immunomodulation and immunomonitoring Our organization is open and democratic. Therefore, all interested partners are welcome to join this initiative. Over the last four years, we have made a big step forward to reach this goal through the organization of the European Workshop on Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases in Amsterdam in 2006, Nuremberg in 2007, London in 2008 and Cascais-Lisbon in 2009. In line with the growing interest for this type of forum for discussion and networking, we are pleased to announce the Fifth European Workshop on Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases, which will take place on December 1 3, 2010 in Sitges-Barcelona, Spain. The workshop will again be a three-day meeting with thematic cross-disciplinary sessions as well as a lot of time for poster discussions and oral presentation of selected abstracts. We will also include 3 satellite symposia which are aimed to focus on immunomodulation and immunomonitoring, in close collaboration with pharmaceutical and biotech partners. This year the Workshop will be preceded by a Masterclass on Psoriasis and Associated Diseases organized by Frank Nestle (London, UK) and Bing Thio (Rotterdam, NL) on November 30 and December 1. This masterclass requires a separate registration as it is restricted to a maximum of 40 participants. Indeed, the aim is to have interactive sessions where the experts and the audience define together the actual state of the art in the field as well as the major challenges for the coming years. Accordingly, this masterclass creates an ideal environment for setting up collaborations and joined research projects. Together with the Organizing Steering Committee and the Scientific Committee, we look forward to your active participation in the Fifth European Workshop on Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases. General Information Dates Masterclass on Psoriasis: 30 November (afternoon) & 1 December (morning) 2010 ewimid 10: 1, 2 & 3 December 2010 Venue MELIÁ SITGES Joan Salvat Papasseit, 38 08870 Sitges Barcelona Spain Located in the heart of the Aiguadolç marina in the northern corner of the charismatic town of Sitges and well communicated with the international airport El Prat (Barcelona), the hotel is located right on La Marina and Balmins beaches, only a 10 minute walk from the centre of Sitges and near the Terramar Golf Club, one of the best golf courses in the region. The hotel provides a total of 307 rooms and has beautiful gardens from which to enjoy the swimming pool and cocktail bar. As an alterative to the leisure options, the hotel also has a fitness centre with a heated swimming pool as well as an extensive range of services such as a hairdresser, sauna, fitness classes, massages and beauty treatments. The city Sitges is on the Mediterranean coast, some 35 km to the south of Barcelona and only 15 minutes from the airport. The coast is famous internationally as a resort destination and is also a great place for business meetings. This privileged location gives the town a mild and warm climate. Sitges has preserved many of its important medieval features and of it history as a fishing and peasant village, and offers visitors a valuable architectural and cultural heritage, also thanks to artists and patrons such as Santiago Rusiñol, Ramón Casas, Miquel Utrillo and Charles Deering. This creative impulse has led to the creation of new projects over recent years such as the International Epic Car Rally, the International Film Festival, the International Jazz Festival and the Concerts in the Summer Cycle. All of this made Sitges an important centre for modernism and for the Americans, men who, on their return from their American adventure, ordered grand mansions to be built by modernist architects. 14
