In addition, we had many members of the Sunrise Club as our special guests. The first speaker, introduced by President Charles Seaman, was Margaret Anderson who opened Ontario's first in-resident cancer hospice in Oakville. After the death of her husband, Ian, in 1990, at 59 years of age, Margaret realized there was a need for quality end-of-life palliative care service in a homelike setting for individuals diagnosed with terminal cancer and a limited life expectancy. After 7 years of effort and lots of resistance from bureaucracy, she opened the Ian Anderson House, a six-bed hospice in a 4,700 sq. ft. house on 1.8 acres with beautiful gardens. This facility offers, without charge, quality care by medical professionals and trained volunteers to anyone who cannot be given the necessary roundthe-clock care in their own homes. Margaret and her son began the project by setting up the Ian Anderson Foundation with a donation of $1million. Almost 1,400 residents have used the facility since 1977, staying for about 10 days on average. For the first 8 years, there was no government funding but that changed in 2005. However, the hospice still needs to raise about $700,000 annually to continue operating. Margaret continues as a volunteer board member and Executive Director. Sheila Bateman, president of the Sunrise Rotary Club expressed our thanks to Margaret for all her efforts. Our

second speaker, introduced by Karen Kirkwood Whyte, was Jon Wood who is leading a dedicated group of volunteers to look into a hospice in Chatham. Jon started his study about one year ago and his committee is recommending a local hospice of about 10 beds. There is currently one in Sarnia with 10 beds, open 18 months, and operating at 88% occupancy. His group has received funding from LHIN and is preparing a business plan and funding feasibility. Most people prefer to die at home, but many currently spend their remaining days in the hospital for the extensive care required. A hospice is a better solution at a much lower cost. John was thanked by Rotarian Carolyn Barko. Keith Dawson Carolynn Barko (President-elect Rotary Club of Chatham), John Wood, Margaret Anderson, Karen Kirkwood-Whyte, Sheila Bateman (President Chatham Sunrise Rotary), Charles Seaman (President Rotary Club of Chatham)
