The exhibit is arranged in sections, focusing on the architects, the Elizabethan Studio in which some of the worked, the houses of worship they designed, and a digital slide show celebrating other work in the city compiled by the AIA Long Beach / South Bay Chapter, Long Beach Design Forum and Studio One Eleven. The work of these architects can be found throughout the city. Using photos, plans, and narrative the exhibit illustrates how the city grew and the impact of these architects on the city s commercial and residential spaces. Each architect s story is unique. Joseph Halstead Roberts is best known for the Californian, St. Regis, Babb house on Country Club Drive, commercial and residential buildings which are featured in the exhibit. Jess Jones work includes residences, Memorial Hospital, and at Long Beach City College the Art Department, Life Science and Administration Buildings. Palmer Power s work includes El Dorado Branch Library, Mrs. Earl S. Daugherty residence, the Signal Hill Police Department, and Cubberly Elementary School. William Lockett worked on Memorial Hospital, Los Altos Branch Library, Grace First Presbyterian Church, and many tracts along Los Coyotes Diagonal. Richard Poper s work includes the Dr. Malcom Todd Residence in Park Estates, Phil Trani s Restaurant, along with many residential and commercial projects. As the city expanded beyond downtown, houses of worship were built in the new neighborhoods, including California Heights United Methodist, Los Altos United Methodist, the Navy Family Chapel, Community Presbyterian, Grace Brethren, St. Thomas of Canterbury, and Temple Beth Sholom. Another exhibition focus is the Elizabethan Studio at 501 Termino Avenue, with its important past with local architects. Built by Joseph Roberts, it served an office to Kenneth Wing,

Jess Jones, William Lockett, and Richard Poper. (The attached backgrounder has a list of addresses and neighborhoods with more details about the HSLB s holdings about the work of these men.) The exhibit opening will be held on Thursday, August 28 from 6:00 pm-9:00 pm. There will be a suggested $20 contribution at the door. Light hors d oeuvres will be served. Panelists are being secured and will be announced at a later time. Exhibit and program sponsors are welcome. Please contact Julie Bartolotto 562/424.2220 or email julieb@hslb.org. ###

Suburban Architecture Exhibition Backgrounder The Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association has funded the Historical Society of Long Beach s latest exhibition, preservation and research project, The Suburban Architecture of Roberts, Jones, Power, Lockett, & Poper AIAs. For years the HSLB has collected materials about Long Beach. Its largest architectural collections can be traced back to two donors Richard and Phyllis Poper and Mary Ellis Carlton. The Popers made several donations over the years which included the work of Palmer Power, William Locket, Jess Jones and of course Richard Poper. Carlton contributed materials pertaining to Joseph Halstead Roberts. The foresight of the Popers and Carlton are to be commended. Over the past six months interns, volunteers, and staff members at the HSLB have been cataloging, digitizing and preserving these collections which are available for the public to study. Exhibition The exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, August 28 at 6:00pm.
