Professor Dr Gregory Ginsberg (Philadelphia, USA) University of Malaya & Malaysian Society of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Distinguished Lecturer 2014 Citation by Dr Ho Shiaw Hooi (Senior Lecturer and Consultant Gastroenterologist, University of Malaya) Gregory Ginsberg is Professor of Medicine and Executive Director of endoscopy in the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He obtained his medical degree in Thomas Jefferson University School of Medicine and spent another 6 years in Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington where he completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Therapeutic Endoscopy. Following his zeal and passion for teaching and research, he took up the post of Assistant Professor of Medicine in University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and began his long and honorable journey in academic life and reaching his current positions in the university in the year 2005 and 2008 respectively. Not only does he hold many important positions and portfolio in his faculty and university hospital, respected and admired by his peers, he was and is entrusted with many task outside his hospital as well. He is the heart and soul of many renowned gastroenterology societies like ACG, AGA and most of all, the ASGE. In the year 2011/2012, he headed the ASGE as President, a position he served with great distinction. He has won countless awards such as 2004 University of Pennsylvania Luigi Mastroianni, Jr, Clinical Innovator Award of Excellence award, Top Doctors award, America s Top Physicians award, 2008 ASGE Distinguished Educator award, etc. just to name a few. A true clinician and academician at heart, he has over 150 peer-reviewed publications in many highimpact-factor-journals and sit in the editorial and reviewer board of many reputable journals. He is a highly sought-after speaker and was invited to speak and organize training workshop in many international platforms. For your information, he was also the invited faculty in our 2008 Endoscopy Workshop. His ongoing clinical research focuses on Barrett s oesophagus, including EMR, RFA and other ablation techniques; GI cancers (in particular EMR); ERCP; EUS; enteral nutritional access, in particular direct percutaneous jejunal feeding tube placement (DPEJ) and natural orifice surgery. Professor Ginsberg married his wife, Jane on 3 rd of Sep 1988 and is blessed with 4 daughters. His career path in endoscopy was very much crafted since young. His father, who was also a gastroenterologist, loved to record his endoscopy work using the same video camera that he would use to film birthday parties and family events without switching the film. So, to his family, watching the boring home movies would intermittently bring out some of the career-inspiring & beautiful endoscopic video such as torrential bleeding peptic ulcer, fungating gastric cancer, obstructive colonic tumour, colonoscopy with fecal loading due to poor bowel preparation and etc. It is then not surprising that he pretty much made up his mind to go into gastroenterology as young as a sixth grader. A field he thought would offer the ideal blend of cognitive and procedural challenges. And time has proven that the decision he made 40 years ago was the correct one. His mentor while he was a fellow at Georgetown University Medical Center, Dr. David Fleischer, pointed out that success in medicine is measured in three ways. As a teacher, can you do good research? As a doctor, can you take good care of your patients? And as a person, can you have a family life? Prof. Ginsberg manages all three well. He said. Ladies and gentlemen, it is my singular honor and pleasure to introduce Professor Greg Ginsberg, a man who is head and shoulders above the rest in the field of GI endoscopy, as our Distinguished Speaker for ENDOSCOPY 2014. 12
