Houses, Farmsteads, and Barns 13 Address: 1022 Baldwin Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-31-100-008 Year Built: 1880 Architectural Style: 1 ½ - story Farm House Other Buildings/Features: Site contains a house, large horse barn, and several other buildings. History /Descriptive Notes: The 1873 settlement map shows a building on this property belonging to Van Valkenburg as part of an 80 acre farm. Windows are original with working shutters indicating a European influence in architectural style. Address: 1303 Baldwin Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-30-400-020 Year Built: 1936 Architectural Style: Dutch Colonial Other Buildings/Features: Site has one main residence, a large barn, and several other buildings dating back to 1960 including a guest house. History /Descriptive Notes: The property of over 15 acres contains a large orchard with pear and apple trees. Field stone exterior walls, accents, and fireplace. There have been several additions and renovations, but, the interior still has the original wood floors. September 2008

History /Descriptive Notes: Although the tax records indicate the house was built in 1935, further research is recommended to determine the age or history of the barns. The 1873 settlement map shows a building on this property as part of the E. Mead 160 acre farm. The cupolas and style of the barns suggest at least the large barn is older than the tax records indicate. Address: 1324 Baldwin Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-31-200-005 Year Built: 1973 Architectural Style: Ranch Other Buildings/Features: Property has a large barn, silo and other utility buildings. History /Descriptive Notes: The 1873 settlement map indicates that this property is part of either the 160 acre farm of Mrs. A. Chapel or Mr. E. Mead. Although the tax records indicate the house was built in 1973, further research is recommended to determine the age or history of the barns. The cupolas and style of the barns suggest at least the large barn is older than the tax records indicate.

The 1873 Settlement map shows a building in this approximate area as part of the D.J. McWain property. Address: 2060 Baldwin Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-32-100-002 Year Built: 1955 barns / 1986 residence (per tax records) Architectural Style: not historic Other Buildings/Features: The tax records indicate (5) buildings including the house. There is also a silo on the property. History /Descriptive Notes: Although the tax records indicate the barns were built in 1955, further research is recommended to determine the age or history of the barns. The site was also identified as significant by Valetta Calder, a local historian. Per the 1873 settlement map, this site is part of the 160 acres belonging to W. M. Eames.

History /Descriptive Notes: The 1873 settlement map indicates a building at this site as part of the T. P. McWain property. The original stone foundation is still visible at the house. There is a barn and split rail fence. Site Name: The Lemme Farm Address: 3107 Baldwin Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-28-300-001 Year Built: 1880 (date source: tax records ) Architectural Style: 2- story Farm House renovated in Tudor Revival Style. Other buildings/features: Has a utility barn on site. There is an old ice house. The original property had an old granary and a chicken coop. Both are still standing but not on this parcel. History /Descriptive Notes: Mrs. Leona Auker was born in this house. They discovered many artifacts including china on site.

A garage was added in 1930 and 1960. History /Descriptive Notes: Wood siding with original windows and stone foundation. Fascia and soffits have white dentil detail. Addition off the back of the house, not original. The former residents owned the Log Cabin Flower Shop for many years.

History /Descriptive Notes: Originally a farmstead built by Charles Walton and currently houses Barb s Box Lunch and Catering. The 1873 settlement map shows a building in this location and according to the 1870 census, Charles Walton was a farmer residing on this property. A hand sketch of the site shows the house as it looks today with a horse barn, several other buildings, and a windmill. The property remained in the family for almost 100 years. Features (2) champion trees: a 90 tall Oak and 67 tall Hickory with two trunks. History /Descriptive Notes: The property has been a source of many Indian tales, such as using a stove on a back porch to warm their hands during the winter.

The 1873 settlement map shows a building in this location as part of the William Butts farm consisting of 80 acres. Prior to 1873, the property was acquired by Samuel Thompson in 1836. History /Descriptive Notes: The 1873 settlement map indicates a building at this site as part of the McNeil farm made up of 160 acres.

Myers Home 21 Address: 5239 Belsay Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-02-200-018 Year Built: 1880± Architectural Style: Greek Revival Other Buildings/Features: none present History/Descriptive Notes: The 1873 settlement map shows that a home existed in this location at the time. Based on this representation and the information provided on C. Faye Myers (see below), it is presumed that this is the first of the Myers farmsteads. The Myers family were pioneers to the area. Site Name: The C. Faye and Mary Myers Home Address: 5268 Belsay Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-02-200-019 Year Built: 1927± (date source: owner) Architectural Style: Colonial Other Buildings/Features: All barns and out buildings have been removed. History/Descriptive Notes: C. Faye and Mary Myers designed and built this home in which they ran a large dairy farm. In 1892 Faye was born at his fathers home at 5239 Belsay Rd (see above). In 1916 he started a Registered Guernsey Dairy Herd aristocracy for 50 years, winning numerous awards for his dairy herd. He served various board positions on a number of associations related to milk production. He also served 10 years on the Board of Education and donated land for the site known as Myers Elementary. They raised four children in this home: Nina, Nate, Addison, and Maribeth.

22 Site Name: The Kerr Memorial Farm Address: 6136 Belsay Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-11-200-002 Year Built: circa 1903 Architectural Style: Victorian Other Buildings/Features: A large dairy barn and two additional out buildings on site. History/Descriptive Notes: The abstract shows a Gilbert Phelps as land owner in 1835, followed by the Pierson family of the City of Flint, which suggests no home was present at the time of their ownership. After leaving her husband in Port Huron, Ms. Ada Black, who purchased the property (132 acres) in 1903 is believed to have built this home. It is named the Kerr Memorial Farm (Ada s maiden name) as represented in the photo to the left. The age of the barns and other out buildings is not known but could be older than the house since it was farmed by the Pierson family. Photo courtesy of property owner

Site Name: The Cheney/Schumaker Home Address: 6189 Belsay Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-11-200-003 Year Built: 1887 (date source: owner) Architectural Style: Victorian Other Buildings/Features: Horse barn (from 1876, was moved to new location on site in 1980). A hen house and granary from 1924 still exist. History/Descriptive Notes: This home was built by Charles and Alma Cheney who lived here from 1886 to 1936. The kitchen was added around the 1930 s. Schumakers became owners in 1936 until 1979 when it was purchased by Mr. Darryl Ertel. There are currently only 5 owners to this property. Portraits of Mr. and Mrs. Cheney have been kept with the house, as well as a photo of the house which shows that this home has remain virtually unchanged. The original cistern is still located in the basement. In 1980 the barn (dated 1876 per owner) was moved closer to the house. 23 Address: 5311 Center Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-03-300-001 Year Built: 1900 Architectural Style: Victorian Other Buildings/Features: unknown History/Descriptive Notes: Little known other than Carl and Pearl Reese lived here with there two children Sam and Alice.

24 Site Name: The Baldwin Farm House Address: 6200 Center Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-09-200-008 Year Built: 1886 (date source: owner) Architectural Style: Greek Revival Other Buildings/Features: none per tax record History/Descriptive Notes: According to current owner, who holds the original abstract, this is known as the Baldwin Farm. Further research is recommended. Site Name: The Conquest Farm Address: 1101 E. Cook Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-19-300-018 Year Built: 1928 (date source: owner ) Architectural Style: Georgian Revival Other Buildings/Features: Original silo and chicken coop remain. Landscaping is from the Conquest family garden including rhubarb plants. History/Descriptive Notes: This house was built across the street from the original which burned in the 1950s. It was rolled over by logs and placed on a new foundation. It was formerly a dairy and crop farm. Much of the barn wood was used as trim as the house was renovated. Rocks throughout the property were once part of foundations.

Site Name: The Luther Seaver Home Address: 1490 E. Cook Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-30-200-015 Year Built: 1880 (date source: owner) Architectural Style: Farm House Other Buildings/Features: unknown History/Descriptive Notes: First land owner (160 acres) was Ira Davenport in 1836. Luther Seaver purchased 80 acres (per abstract) in 1855 and later died in 1910, leaving his estate to his four sons: Myron A., Willard L., Casper A., and Dor W. Dates indicate that Luther built this house, however, the exact year should be verified. Son Willard Seaver and wife Mertle sold property to J. Edington Burroughs in 1925. Current land owner purchased property from the Pearson Estate and is still farming the land today.

Cook Road was named after him by Consumers Power Company due to the extensive electrical facilities that ran through his property.

Worden in 1837 and sold to Levi Parsons in 1835. Abigail M. and Edward D. Parsons purchased the land in 1890 and Ivan E. and Bessie M. Parsons purchased in 1918. Based on the 1870 census, Edward was a single man operating a farm. The 1880 census shows he and Abigail both operating a farm with one child Cassen.

Site Name: The McFarlen/Embury Farm Address: 8160 Embury Road Tax Parcel Number: 12-21-100-003 Year Built: 1860 Architectural Style: Colonial revival Other Buildings/Features: One out building built in 1966 per tax records. History/Descriptive Notes: The age of this home (from tax records) in comparison to the 1873 settlement map suggests that this could be the home of John and Margaret McFarlen. However, it is also known as the Embury Farm where Elmer and Phillip both lived at different times. Phillip was the postmaster in Grand Blanc and Elmer was married to Emma Bush, daughter of Jacob and Amelia Bush.
