01 CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTURE. Chipperfield was trained by Richard Rogers and Norman Foster. Since 1984 he is self-employed. He now maintains offices in London, Berlin and Milan, and a representative office in Shanghai. Chipperfield was the only British architect who was shortlisted to receive the contract to design the Tate modern museum in London. He designed the Figge Art Museum in Davenport and the award-winning River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames with green oak cladding, concrete and glass. Many of his buildings are, however, abroad, particularly in Japan and Germany. In January 2006 in Marbach am Neckar he handed over the Museum of Modern Literature as part of the German literature archive in Marbach. In 2007 he was awarded the Stirling Prize for it. In 2007 he was awarded the contract for the implementation of his award-winning design of the new building of the Museum Folkwang in Essen. He is a visiting professor at the London College of the Arts, a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and holds the Mies van der Rohe Chair at the Escola Tecnica Superior Arquitectura in Barcelona. Martin Godwin We build to protect ourselves from nature. Buildings neutralise nature. They help us to stay dry, cool and warm. Having achieved this protected condition we attempt to reintroduce, in a controlled way, the elements that we seek shelter from, for it is these elements that give significance to our life: a warm ray of light, a cool breeze, a view of the garden. 03 HIGHLIGHTS.
04 LANDMARKBUILDING. DAVID CHIPPERFIELD
04 LANDMARKBUILDING.DAVID CHIPPERFIELD The Landmarkbuilding is divided into four residential units - each equipped with a swimming pool, which are staggered in four buildings one behind the other. Each of the four apartments is joined to the mountain slope, enabling a maximum number of rooms to have a view of Lake Garda with a spacious, wide set of windows. Due to the consequent orientation to the valley, there are protected, private areas between the buildings which include terraces and pools. Living and sleeping rooms are located on two levels. The side rooms are located in the basement of each building. Based on the general concept, pergolas are in front of the wide set of windows, creating sun protection and privacy at the same time and also building the relationship with the remote and close landscape area. On the one hand, the regular rhythm of the pergola support in the longitudinal direction places the viewer into spatial relations to the vast horizon. On the other hand, the bordering natural area in the transverse direction is associated directly with the living room, framed by the pergola. The pergola area becomes a decisive conceptual element for the project. Due to the location of the Landmarkbuilding between the hotel on one side and the side facing the slope on the other, there is a public and a private area in the landscape area. The public side of the Landmarkbuilding facing the hotel organises the access situation. Every apartment building can be reached on foot through a path which has been built into the landscape. The living room turns away from the hotel and gets its individual privacy in the middle of the olive grove in the building configuration. The shared pool can be reached from the pergolas. With a view of Lake Garda, the sublime swimming pool nestles along the western slope back. The entrance to the shared underground car park in both buildings is organised by a low base-like gate building, which fits into the overall picture of the Landmarkbuilding due to its location and material formation. A spacious entrance situation receives the residents from the street. The top two buildings are connected by an access road above the property. The apartments are created with spacious relations between interior and exterior spaces which become protected islands within a commonly used olive grove. When positioning the building, value was placed on the roof space and attic of the uppermost building which is well below the public Belvedere and the Villa Matteo Thun so as not to impair the view.
