ACSR Report 2011-2014 ARCASIA Committee on Social Responsibility Timeline August 2011 Progress ACSR Chair (Ar. Joseph Kwan - HKIA) was nominated at ARCASIA Council Meeting in Danang November 2011 HKIA to be the Member Institute to provide the Secretariat support to the Chair during the tenure of his two year term HKIA set up Committee on Social Responsibility (SR) under its ARCASIA/CAA Committee December 2011 ACSR Chair sent out e-blast to all 18 ARCASIA Member Institutes requesting responses on: Name(s) of Representative to ACSR (Annex A) Suggested topics relevant to their countries (Annex A) January 2012 Preparation of Ppt. March July 2013 Liaise with SONA to organize a Universal Design Public Toilet for All Design Competition for Kathmandu, Nepal and a halfday post Forum-17 symposium on architecture and social responsibility in Kathmandu, Nepal Prepare a proposal for the above Programme. Nov 2013 April 2014 Consolidating the presentations materials of the ACSR Post- Forum Symposium and the winning entries of the Universal Design Public Toilet for All Design Competition for uploading them onto the ARCASIA website. Nov 2013 May 2014 Compile and edit the presentations materials submitted by Member Institutes participated in the 2 nd ACSR Meeting in Kathmandu October 2013 for uploading onto the ACSR webpage. May - June 2014 Prepare Meeting Agenda for the 3 rd ACSR Meeting in KL, Malaysia, on 24 June 2014 Send out reminders to 19 Member Institutes for the following: seek confirmation of their attendance to the Meeting provide name(s) of their Representative(s) to the Meeting prepare Country Report for sharing at the 3 rd ACSR Meeting prepare Report for follow-up actions from the 2 nd ACSR Meeting in Kathmandu in 2013 Jan June 2014 Coordinate with PAM to organize the 2nd Half-day Symposium on Social Responsibility and Architecture on 29 June 2014 in KL during ACA16 and on the Architectural Student Design Ideas Competition on Socially Responsible Architecture Prepare a proposal and budget for the above events with Ar. Norwina Mohd Nawawi (PAM) Co-Chair of the Symposium and the Design Competition for approval by President Pei Ing. Promotion of the Symposium and the Design Competition to students of all ARCASIA recognized Schools of Architecture. Oct 2013 June 2014 Prepare the first draft of ARCASIA Charter on Social Responsibility to be presented to ARCASIA Member Institutes for discussion at the 3 rd ACSR Meeting, the ARCASIA Office Bearers Meeting and at the Council Meetings held during 24-26 June in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. April August 2014 To contribute to the ARCASIA Booth at UIA Congress in Durban, South Africa, during 3 7 August 2014. To assist UIA Region IV WP Architecture for a Sustainable Future on Seminar with the theme: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY of ARCHITECTS ON CLIMATE CHANGE as Keynote Speaker on 4 August 2014. June Dec 2014 To refine the ARCASIA Charter on Social Responsibility based on the comments received from the 3 rd ACSR Meeting, ARCASIA

Office Bearers Meeting and Council Meetings held on 24-26 June in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The final draft is expected to be completed by HKIA Members in early 2015, then circulate to ARCASIA Member Institutes for comments and endorsement. President Pei Ing to launch the Charter at the ARCASIA Forum to be held in Thailand in 2015. Attended and participated as a Keynote Presentation at the IAP International Forum on Social Responsibility at Islamabad in November 2014 Chaired The ARCASIA Roundtable on Social Responsibility (SR) at Islamabad in November 2014; drafted and adopted a Resolution on Social Responsibility to be conveyed to the ARCASIA Council at the Council Meeting to be held in Ayutthaya, Thailand in November 2015 Provided a Lecture entitled: Universal Accessibility - The New Design Paradigm for the 21st Century to 4 th & 5 th year students and staff of COMSATS Institute of Information Technology in Islamabad Attended the Handover Meeting in Bangkok on 17 January 2015 to inform the Incoming ACSR Chair Ar. Rita Soh (SIA) on activities to be followed up in 2015-16 Ongoing On Disaster Management and Mitigation: Prepare a Directory of the Architects/Experts with experience relating to various aspects of natural disaster design, pre and post-disaster, management and mitigation, reconstruction, supervision, training, etc. Compile a Resources Publication on all aspects of natural disaster, design for rural and urban context, fire, flooding, earthquakes, typhoons, etc. websites, International and Regional NGOs. Form AEA ARCASIA Emergency Architects group/institute to provide aids and assistance to our region in the event of emergencies without seeking assistance from outside our region. Develop ARCASIA knowledge base and resource people within and for Asia. (JIA already has a Committee on Anti -Disaster Measures as reference) Ongoing Updating the ACSR Facebook

Proposed Initiatives of ACSR under ARCASIA 1. To include a SR Category in future ARCASIA Awards 2. To allocate a session for SR discussion in each ARCASIA Forum and Congress 3. To enhance discussion and sharing on SR topics in Student Jamboree 4. To organize SR related architectural design competitions for the profession and for students 5. To include SR related design courses into the Curriculum of Schools of Architecture through ACAE 6. To promote the introduction of SR related practices into professional practice of the industry through ACPP 7. To encourage the implementation of SR related designs to complement sustainable designs through ACGSA 8. To facilitate Architects and Practices to adopt ISO26000: Social Responsibility as a core value of their organization through their conception of social responsible and sustainable architecture

ACSR Follow up Actions in 2015 Onwards 1. ACSR Charter on Social Responsibility to be completed and launched at ARCASIA Forum18 in Ayutthaya, Thailand in November 2015. 2. ARCASIA Emergency Architects (AEA) to continue with the compilation of a Directory on Experts with experience on disaster related designs and projects; and a Resources database on codes, design guidelines, research and literature on disasters. 3. AEA to collaborate with Asia Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in Bangkok on post-disaster reconstruction and disaster management, and be ready to provide technical assistance to areas affected by disasters in the ARCASIA region. 4. To construct the universally accessible public toilet in Kathmandu, Nepal in association with IDEAS Project and SONA in 2015. Budget available from Malaysian Sponsors at US$12,000.00 (Ar. J. Kwan will continue to coordinate and liaise with all parties to implement this ARCASIA Project). 5. To assist all future Forum and ACA Organizing Committees to include social responsibility topics and issues within the main Forum and ACA programmes. 6. To continue to promote and highlight social responsibility topics through architectural competitions for students and the professional. 7. To continue to promote Good Practice Designs in social responsibility through ARCASIA Awards. 8. To collaborate with ACAE to formulate the principles of social responsibility and promote the inclusion of these curriculum as part of architectural educations in Schools through ARCASIA Member Institutes. 9. To encourage commitment from Member Institutes to promote socially responsible architecture in their CPD Programmes. 10. Work with other ARCASIA Committees to promote and encourage social responsibility; ACAE, ACPP, ACGSA, Young Architects.
