Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES June 21-27, 2014 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Usman Road should be declared as No Hawking Zone Sir, This refers to the petition filed by the East Usman Road Hawkers Association praying to Madras High Court that it restrain the civic authorities from evicting them by taking shelter under the recently passed The Street Vendors Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vendors Act 2014. It has been after several years of persuasion, overcoming legal hassles and other external forces that the Corporation managed to relocate/evict the encroachments. Most of the longtime pavement vendors on Usman Road and Pondy Bazaar have been relocated to the Hawkers Complex constructed exclusively for them. It is the new set of vendors who have taken the place of the old vendors who have petitioned the court under the umbrella of the Hawkers Association. The Court should vacate the petition in the interest of the general public or else the efforts taken by the authorities in clearing the pavements will be nullified. Further, most of the commercial establishments in the commercial hub of T. Nagar are constructed without proper fire safety norms. If the pavements remain encroached inhibiting free movement, then it could lead to a disastrous situation in case of a major fire or any medical emergency. While the Street Vendors Act 2014 envisages protecting the livelihood of the street vendors, it overlooks the freedom of movement for the common man. I appeal to the judges to not only dismiss the petition but also take this opportunity to declare Usman Road as a No Hawking Zone T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, No. 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar. Improper de-silting of storm water drains Sir, The storm water drains in Ramanathan Street (T. Nagar) are clogged which led to water logging during the recent rains. After we complained to the authorities, they deputed workers to clear the drains. However the workers are de-silting the drains only close to the manhole openings and not its entire stretch. When I enquired, the workers said it is unsafe to do it manually but can be done with a machine. I request the concerned authorities to deploy machines to de-silt the entire stretch of the drain. Nagar, are suffering for the past three years without Metrowater. There is no water supply in any of the adjacent or nearby streets. Our repeated complaints to Metrowater officials have only fallen in deaf ears. The matter was highlighted a month ago during the grievance meet held at the aegis of T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, wherein T. Nagar MLA V P Kalairajan, Councilor Video Saravanan and a host of Corporation and Metrowater officials were present. We had again given a written complaint on June 14 during the open house meet called by Metrowater in its area office in Muthur Krishnan Street, T Nagar. The residents are regularly paying their Metrowater dues in spite of the fact that they have not received a drop of water in their taps for the last three years. How can government agency deny the basic needs of the citizen? Who is accountable for this problem and why no one is taking responsibility to resolve the issue? Men on bike snatch wallet from woman Three men on a bike snatched the wallet from a 27- year-old woman in broad daylight as she was walking along Chamiers Road, Nandanam on June 19. Ankita Tandon (from Delhi), who was on an official visit to Chennai was walking to her office at around 12.30p.m after having lunch in a nearby restaurant, when three men on a motorbike pushed her down, grabbed her wallet and raced away. Ankita said that everything happened so fast that by the time she realized what had happened, the thieves had gone and she could not even note down or memorize the registration number. A case registered in Saidapet Police Station is under investigation.
June 21-27, 2014 Lost pet dog reunited with owner after report in Mambalam Times Following the report Two lost pet dogs rescued by Ammu Foundation published in Mambalam Times last week, one of the dogs was restored to the owner and the other was adopted by an animal lover. S. S. Uma (Founder, Ammu Foundation) said that the Labrador was reunited with its owner (a resident of North Boag Road) who contacted her after reading the news in the paper. His dog had gone missing over a week ago and he had since been searching for it. The other dog which was under the temporary care of animal activist K.E.S Jayalakshmi was adopted by a T. Nagar) was the youngest member of Magic Lantern (an amateur drama troupe) that staged Kalki s Ponniyin Selvan in Music Academy from June 8 to14. Kandiban had his first taste of acting last year when he played Captain Hook in a stage show English classic Peter Pan J. M. Barrie. Kandiban had casually gone with his father to watch a rehearsal session of Ponniyin Selvan and liked it so much that he told his father he would like to be part of the show.
