Page 1 7. Narrative Description This is a one-story concrete block commercial building that appears to have been built around 1940. It replaced an earlier stone gable-roof one-story building on this site. The concrete block construction is visible along the east side and rear section. The façade is enamel block, with cream block with dark blue block accents. The bulkhead under the large display windows is the dark blue block, and it curves at the right/east end back to the single-door entry. Dark blue accents are then found along the west/left side of the building and across the top. Glass block was utilized for the transom window area. The front parapet continues along the east side. The original building appears to have extended the depth of the lot, with an addition built to the east of the rear/north end in 1946. This addition is also concrete block, and it would have provided direct access into the rear of the building from 6 th Street. The small one-story corner building to the east within the L of this building was demolished in the 1990s. 8. Narrative Statement of Significance appears to contribute historically and architecturally to the potential Downtown Commercial Historic District (#29-03685). The building appears to have been built around 1940 for the Lind family, constructed of concrete blocks with an enamel façade. The streamlined modern design and curved bulkhead reflect the downtown design ethic of the 1940s. operated here from the early 1940s to the late 1950s. This significant downtown business had operated at two other downtown locations prior to moving into this building constructed by the owner-operator. This history contributes to the significance of the historic district. The building may also be individually eligible under Criterion C for its modern architectural design. Further research and assessment of the interior would be required for full individual evaluation. The building is currently noted as contributing in the West Jefferson Street Historic District (1991, #29-00001), though it had been evaluated as noncontributing due to its later date of construction. Lots 797 and 798 at the northwest corner of Jefferson and 6 th Street were subdivided as part of the Starr & Starr Subdivision in the early 1870s. Peter Starr sold Lot 3 at the corner to Cook and Lauman on April 24, 1873, and they sold the west 19 feet of Lot 3 (20 feet) to George Hauber on June 27, 1888 (Transfer Book 4, p, 302). Sanborn fire insurance maps show a smaller one-story building here in 1892, 1900, and 1930. This one story building appears to have served as Hauber s Lock Shop. George Hauber operated a locksmith business at this address in 1890, and he is last listed here in 1912. In 1916, Paul Hauber s lock shop was then operating at this location (city directories). An undated photo shows the earlier frame Hauber building. A historic plaque on the front identifies the construction date of the current building as 1922, though no primary information was found to corroborate that date, and it appears to be incorrect (date of the start of, at another location). Paul Hauber continued to operate the locksmith business here through the 1930s and 1940s. The building (west 19 of Lot 3) was transferred from Ida K. A. Hauber to Paul C. Hauber on September 11, 1937. Paul Hauber was last listed here in the 1940 city directory. On July 2, 1940, Paul Hauber sold the building to Mae Lind (Transfer Book 10, p. 376). She continued to own it at her death in 1977, and it was then sold by executor. A portion of Lot 2 to the east was sold

Page 2 to C.R. and Mae Lind on February 19, 1931, and interest transferred to only Mae Lind on July 2, 1940 as well. This appears to have then set the stage for the construction of the current building. The 1952 Sanborn map shows a concrete block building the full depth of Lot 3 and extending to the east at the rear into Lot 2. The 1942 city directory continues to list, operated by Clayton R. Lind, at 506-508 Jefferson. Lind started as manager at Federal Bakery at 410 Jefferson, and he bought it around 1922, changing the name to. It operated here until December 1933 when he moved to 506-508 Jefferson. In 1942, McKay s Cut Rate Drugs is listed at 602 Jefferson. So, the building may have been built by the Linds and initially rented, or it was possibly built between 1942 and 1945 specifically for the bakery to move here. Per the 1945 city directory, was listed at 602 Jefferson. A note in the December 31, 1946 references that an addition was built at the rear of Lind bakery on Jefferson (Hawk-Eye, December 31, 1946, 8). continues to be listed here through the 1950s, with the tag line We Cater to your Desires. The 1955 listing also notes that they had oven fresh bakery products and specialized in decorated cakes. is last listed here in the 1957 city directory, and it was still operated by Clayton R. Lind. The 1960 directory shows One Hour Martinizing Cleaners in the building, operated by Jack Tuggle. Sickel s Laundry was here in 1963. From 1965 into the 1970s, it was Ingersoll Shoe Service and Sales. Dorothy Lind Caviezel and her husband John sold the building to Katherine Cline in 1986 (Transfer Book 10, p. 376). It was the location of Dixon s Locksmith service until 2011. The building is now vacant, with rehab begun. 9. Major Bibliographical References Brower, Steven. West Jefferson Street Historic District. National Register of Historic Places nomination form.
