The 11th Ward recently sponsored the annual Spelling Bee for 5th grade students at Armour Park, located at 3309 S. Shields. Each participant was given a list of 100 words, twenty-five of those words were chosen as the contest words. An additional 10 unfamiliar words were given in case of a tie. Cook County Commissioner John P. Daley and Alderman James A. Balcer are pleased to announce the winners of the 11th Ward Spelling Bee: 1st place Emily Ecklund, St. Jerome School; 2nd place Ashley O Donnell, Santa Lucia School; 3rd place Mary Claire Mangan, St. Jerome School; 4th place Kailyn Thrash, Santa Lucia School; and 5th place Nicholas Lozano, St. Jerome School. Alderman Balcer and I would like to thank all the students who participated in our spelling bee. Brighton Park Library Computer Classes in April Our CyberNavigator will be offering classes in basic computer and internet skills and Gmail this month. Computer Class One, mouse and keyboarding skills, is for people with no computer experience. Class One will be offered on Saturday, April 3 at 1pm and on Thursday, April 22 at 5pm. If you are comfortable using a mouse and keyboard but want to learn about using the internet, then Computer Class Two is for you. Class Two will be offered on Thursday, April 8 at 5 pm & on Saturday, April 17 at 1pm. If you are familiar with the internet and would like an email account, the Gmail class is for you. The Gmail class will be offered on Saturday, April 10 at 1pm. Each session lasts one hour, Registration is not required, space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Santa Lucia School News The Lightning Places First and Second The Santa Lucia basketball teams played Bridgeport Catholic Academy on Saturday, March 6th on the last day of the 2010 season. The 1st & 2nd grade team placed second and the 3rd & 4th grade team placed first. The younger team showed great defensive skills and amazing teamwork. Each player used the tools that they learned during practice out on the court, said Ms. Rodriguez, the 2nd grade teacher and Assistant coach. The 3rd and 4th grade team showed great passing skills and played very well together as well. Mr. Steve Burrows is the head coach of both teams. Balcer announce that the parking passes and stickers for the White Sox Parking Program are available to be picked up at the 11th Ward Office, 3659 S. Halsted. To be eligible to receive a pass or sticker, the individual must present a valid Illinois driver s license or state identification with an address within the boundaries of the parking program. As in the past, we caution all about the illegal distribution or sale of the stickers and guest passes. VFW Thank You It is with great appreciation that Donald Kozicki, Commander & James Frenden, Senior Vice Commander, and the members of Bridgeport VFW Post 5079 wish to express their sincere thanks to all our members, friends & community neighbors who so generously made donations to our recent clothing drive. In the weeks of the drive, District officials came to Post 5079 to pick up collected items over a dozen times and the amount of clothing that Post 5079 had collected far surpassed all expectations! The collected clothing was distributed to Homeless Veterans and the excess clothing will be brought to the VA Hospital, where it will be handed out to veterans in need.
