The New American House The New American House project is a 12-home, green community located off Trailwood Drive, a quiet road close to downtown. Each custom home will be designed by a different local architect and the sustainable design of its infrastructure and homes, abundant green space, and proximity to transit, greenways, and other urban amenities promise to make this neighborhood an ideal choice for the environmentally -conscious homebuyer. This project will be one of a few private developments in the Triangle to adopt rigorous sustainable development guidelines. The New American House Green Builder Program will enable home owners to build houses that are resource and energy efficient, have lower maintenance requirements, and are healthier to live in than a typical home. In addition, the guidelines will help to protect the natural surroundings and ensure proper disposal or recycling of waste during and after the construction process. Meeting a market demand for energy efficient, custom-built housing, the New American House project sets an elevated standard for environmentally, architecturally significant living in the area. The New American House: The North Carolina School On April 4, 2006 The City Council approved the rezoning of eleven and a half acres of property on Trailwood Drive, making way for The New American House Project, a twelve parcel development that will demonstrate the virtues of sustainable building technology and modern architecture. The New American House Project is the outgrowth of a 2003 exhibition, The Art of Architecture, The North Carolina School, at Duke University s Nasher Museum of Art. Cited by Metro Magazine as a timely and beautifully rendered reminder of North Carolinas enduring tradition of modern architecture and the architects who design it," the exhibit featured architectural models, free-hand sketches, pastels, graphics and watercolors by 21 practicing North Carolina architects. We are going to take this project one step further and exhibit market-ready homes designed by 12 North Carolina architects. says curator, architect and developer Philip Szostak, AIA. Szostak and partners Frank Phoenix, Herman Green and Bill Patrick have joined forces to showcase their interest in revolutionizing the way homes are built, lessening their impact on the environment: We want to offer an alternative to buyers in the new home market by creating uniquely designed residences that will serve as modern case studies in sustainability. Szostak continues. "We will design and build these homes with real sensitivity to the way they touch the earth." Sustainabilty is defined by three guiding principles: environmental stewardship, economic vitality, and social responsibility. Everyone understands the need for environmental change," stresses partner Frank Phoenix, "but we need to incorporate economic and social impacts as well, redefining what it means to build in harmony with nature. Forty percent of the world s population lives in America, yet as a nation we consume more than 30% of the world s resources and emit over 40% of the world s greenhouse gasses. In the United States, consumption patterns are the result of life style choices made years ago when energy was cheap and the earth s resources, including clean air and water were thought to be inexhaustible. Ten years from now, sustainable homes will be the norm," says Phoenix, "not because it will be mandatory, but because it's the right way of doing it. It just makes 100 percent sense," he adds. "For a small amount of money, you can have a better, more energy efficient house. It's a no -brainer." The twelve homes will occupy only three acres of the total tract of the land, leaving approximately eight acres as community garden and open space. The partners anticipate breaking ground for the new project in the Fall of 2006.

Twelve Architects Chosen to Design Community of Sustainable Homes Twelve architects from the Triangle have been chosen to design the twelve homes for the New American House Project. Selected because of their design integrity, each firm will design a home that will model modern ideas for sustainable green homes. All twelve architect are associated with NCSU s School of Architecture as faculty or adjunct faculty. We wanted to give these firms the opportunity to explore the idea of what a new sustainable home would be. Each has shown their dedication to the art of architecture: Now they each can display their thoughts on the sustainable future of the house and how we build. Szostak continues. The Twelve Architects are as Follows: John Caleindo, Architect Cannon Architects Ellen Cassilly, Architect Roger Clark, FAIA Design Corps Dixon Weinstein Tonic Design Jessica Johnson Kenneth Hobgood, Architect Oxide Architecture Pearce Brinkley Cease + Lee Szostak Design Durham Chapel Hill Chapel Hill Tonic Construction Chosen as Preferred Builder Tonic Construction, known for its sensitivity to design and sustainable construction has been chosen as the preferred builder for twelve homes that will be designed. Tonic Construction and the developer will work together to insure owner, architect and builder communication to insure efficient and satisfactory construction practices.
