First Generation 1. William Beattie, son of Andrew Beattie (4 Jun 1699-1762) & Isabel Isobel Atchinson (abt 17-1763). William was born in Castlehill, Eskdalemuir Parish, Dumfries-shire County, Scotland, on 17 Jan 1734. 424 William died - Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, on 30 Apr 29; he was 95. 424 William Beattie was a shepherd for the Curle family at Moodlay and Craikhope, at Annan, Scotland. He loved the rugged highlands and the sheep that roamed the hills, and if he was tempted to take his family to the new colonies, he resisted the temptation and continued the work he loved for sixty-eight years... from Century Farms of Westminster Township by Marguerite E. Murray A large grandfather clock was presented to him 15 September for being the oldest shepherd serving one master in Scotland. The clock is now in the home of Doug and Jessie Beattie. The inscription on the clock reads: The clock was purchased with a PREMIUM by the Border Agricultural Society on 15 September to WILLIAM BEATTIE CRAICKHOPE for serving the family of CURLE 68 tears as SHEEPHERD (sic) ON THE FARMS OF MOODLAY and CRAICKHOPE. On 6 Aug 1762 when William was 28, he married Jane(t) Anderson, daughter of James Anderson & Agnes Hastie, at Eskdalemuir Parish, Dumfries-shire County, Scotland. 424 Jane(t) was born in Eskdalemuir Parish, Dumfries-shire County, Scotland, abt 1738. Jane(t) died Dumfries, Scotland on Feb 1790. Descendants of Jane(t) Anderson 3 20 Fred L. Appleton

They had the following children: 2 i. Andrew (1763-28 Aug 44) 3 ii. Agnes (1765-) iii. Isabella Isobel. Isabella Isobel was born in Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, in 1767. Isabella Isobel died - Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland on 1 Apr 1771. Isabella Isobel was baptized at Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, on Feb 1767. Isabella Isobel married [unknown] Eden 393. 4 iv. James (Twin) (1770-2 Jul 45) v. Elspeth (Twin). Elspeth was born in Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, abt 1770. Elspeth died - Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland on 1 Apr 1771. Elspeth was baptized at Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, on 20 Mar 1770. 5 vi. John (1780- Aug 32) First Generation 4 20 Fred L. Appleton

Second Generation Family of William Beattie (1) & Jane(t) Anderson 2. Andrew Beattie (William 1 ). Andrew was born in Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, in 1763. 393 Andrew died - Ontario, Canada on 28 Aug 44. Buried in Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery, Lambeth, Ontario, Canada. Andrew was baptized at Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, on 3 Jun 1763. Immigrated abt 23 to Lambeth, Ontario, Canada. 393 Emigrated abt 23 from Lambeth, Ontario, Canada. Andrew Beattie was married in Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire County, Scotland. He and his wife Jane (Thomson) Beattie moved to Ettrick Parish in Selkirkshire County, Scotland. When their daughter Jane was born in 1797 Andrew Beattie was an indweller at Beldford in Ettrick. He may have moved to Eskdalemuir Parish in Dumfriesshire County. Before he came to North America he may also have lived in Southdean parish in Roxburghshire County and in Northumberland County England because he went to New York with others from there or he may have lived in Castleton Parish in Roxburghshire. Andrew Beattie emigrated to United States, to New York State. He may have lived in Seneca County between Geneva and Ithaca, New York. His son William (born 1795) was married in Geneva, N.Y. in 22 to Martha Beaden. Andrew and his family came to Upper Canada in 23. Andrew probably settled on Lot 71 west side of Talbot Road, on the north side of Lambeth. Lambeth was at then called the Junction. It was where the North Talbot Road met Commissioner's Road. Andrew was said to have come to Canada with 4 sons and 4 daughters and a sister, a widow, Mrs. Isobel Eden. Mr. John Routledge, who settled on Lot 72 on the Talbot Road was from Northumberland County, England where he had lived on the farm of Burnfoot. He had been a cattle dealer and had often visited Scotland buying cattle. In 17 (or 19) he moved his family to Seneca County, New York. He was said to have come to Westminster about the same time as Andrew Beattie. The Rev. William Proudfoot wrote on February 33: "Andrew Beattie, an old man of Eskdalemuir, who lived down near St. Thomas, called to-day. He seems to be a good man, to have a delight in evangelical preaching." "The old man appeared to me to talk very sensibly, and very much like a Scotchman. How is this to be wondered at. The Americans talk about everything, but chiefly about dollars, whereas Andrew Beattie thought of the doctrine of the Holy Bible while tending his flocks amongst the moors of South Scotland. It will be long ere America contains a population resembling the shepherds of Etterick, and Yamous, of Liddesdale and Ayrosbor - there used to live men of God who fed upon the Gospel and who loved it, the Descendants of Jane(t) Anderson 5 20 Fred L. pure marrow of the truth. Mr. Proudfoot may have been writing about this Andrew Beattie in his journal because Andrew was then an old man of 70 years. Andrew did not settle near St. Thomas, but Mr.Proudfoot was new in the area and might have made a mistake, or Andrew might have been living there at that time. One might assume he was referring to this Andrew Beattie because it seems likely this Andrew Beattie had lived in Eskdalemuir, where his daughter Jane joined the church. Mr Beattie had lived in the United States and may have mentioned this to Mr. Proudfoot. Rev. Proudfoot wrote of the Americans and the dollar. Mr. Beattie may have come to Canada because he did not like the materialism of the Americans. One might also assume that this "old man" as described by Rev. Proudfoot, would not likely marry a year later. However, Andrew Beattie married Isabella Boston, the widow of James Dickson. Rev. Proudfoot wrote in his diary on 7 May 34:" Andrew Beattie called to ask me to proclaim him and Isabella Boston for marriage." He then wrote of proclaiming their marriage on May th at the English Settlement, May th at London and on May 25th at the Bethel Church on the Proof Line. On 27 May 34 Rev. Proudfoot wrote in his journal: "Rode up to Lobo and married Andrew (Beattie) and Elizabeth (sic) Boston. The wedding was a very becoming one. Warm even hot." Rev. Proudfoot mistakenly called the bride Elizabeth although he had written Isabella several other times earlier in his diary. He recorded the marriage on the marriage register with Isabella's name correctly written: "May 27 34 Andrew Beattie to Isabella Boston of Lobo." Isabella Boston was from Lobo Township. Two Ferguson brothers, John and Andrew, left Melrose, Roxburghshire, Scotland in June if 19 and they settled in Lobo on Lot Concession 3 in 21. Before leaving Scotland Andrew Ferguson had married Janet Boston, and the history of Lobo Township, Middlesex County has the further information about them that "some of whose people followed to Lobo later." There was a village on the border of Lobo and London townships named Melrose after where these people had come from in Scotland. Isabella was likely Janet Boston's sister. She named a daughter Janet, who married John Elliot, the son of Helen Murray and John Elliot Jr. Andrew Beattie died 28 August 44 at the age of 81. This strongly dedicated Presbyterian Scot is buried in Trinity Anglican Cemetery. This Cemetery, on the NE 1/4 Lot 70, North Talbot Road in the village of Lambeth in Westminster is owned by the general public of Lambeth and not the Anglican Church. The land for Trinity church and cemetery was left by an early pioneer Jeremiah Schram who died in 26, leaving one acre of land to the use of a burying yard, with a grant and liberty to build a place of worship to any denomination professing Christianity Second Generation 6 20 Fred L. Appleton

conformable to the Church of England. This property was next to the Beattie property and Andrew Beattie's daughter Margaret was married to Jeremiah Schram's son Peter. I determined this Andrew Beattie must have married Isabella Boston although he was quite elderly, by a complicated method. On the 51 Westminster census there was an Isabella Beattie who owned Lot 71 North Talbot Rd. along with James Beattie, son of Andrew Beattie. The census has that she was living in the household of Thomas Head or she was living with her daughter since I think she is mentioned twice. Isabella is listed twice on this Westminster census, once as Isabella Beattie, age 63 with a Margaret Boston age 15 living with her. (Part 2, p. 7. # 17; Pt. 2 p. 5 # 40). However, on that Westminster census in the household of John Elliot and his wife Janet Dickson there is an Isabella Dixon age 64 and a Margaret Boston age 15 (Part 4, p. 197-199). She was, I have assumed Janet's mother Isabella Boston, who married a Dickson. I have assumed Isabella Dixon and Isabella Beattie, although different ages are the same person because both had Margaret Boston listed with them and because on the 61 census for Westminster in this same John Elliot's household is Isabella Beattie age 75. This proved the woman who owned former Andrew Beattie property was the Isabella Dixon whose maiden name as Boston.. Since she was born c.1786 in Scotland and was an older woman when she married again it seemed possible she could have married Andrew Beattie as a second husband. On 6 Dec 1793 Andrew first married Jane Thomson at Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland. They had the following children: 6 i. William (9 Nov 1794-29 Jul 70) 7 ii. Isabella (1795-1 Sep 83) 8 iii. Jane (6 Jan 1797-2 Sep 77) 9 iv. Jeanette (1799-51) v. Margaret (03-90) vi. James (05-29 Dec 65) On 27 May 34 Andrew second married Isabella Boston at Westminister Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. 3. Agnes Beattie (William 1 ). Agnes was born in Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, in 1765. Agnes died - Scotland. Agnes was baptized at Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, on Jan 1765. Agnes married John Scott. Second Generation 7 20 Fred L. Appleton

They had the following children: i. Arcibald. Arcibald was born in West Buccleugh, Scottland, on 7 Oct 1790. Arcibald was baptized at Ettrick, Scotland, on 26 Nov 1790. ii. Janet. Janet was baptized at Buccleughs Hall, Ettrick, Scotland, on 31 Jul 1792. iii. William. iv. John. John was born on 3 Jul 1796. v. James. James was born in Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, abt 1767. 4. James Beattie (William 1 ). James was born in Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, in 1770. James was baptized at Craikhope, Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, on 20 Mar 1770. Immigrated in 30 to Canada. 393 Emigrated in 30 from Scotland. James died on 2 Jul 45. 23 Buried in Pond Mills Cemetery, Westminister Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. 23 Occupation: 1798, Shepherd. Must attribute James Beattie and his wife Margaret Oliver lived at Craikhope in Roberton Parish, Roxburghshire County, Scotland where James was a shepherd. Their children were born at Craikhope. In 30 James Beattie and his wife and eight children left from the port of Annan, Scotland, on Solway Firth and sailed to Liverpool. They had decided to emigrate to Westminster Township in Upper Canada where James' brother had been living for several years. The Beatties appear to have saved enough money for their passage and to have had money to buy property when they reached Westminster. The Beatties left Liverpool on a sailing ship for North America. The sons Robert, Andrew and James were accomplished pipers and were offered free passage to Montreal if they would pipe for passengers during the voyage, but they preferred to travel with the rest of the family and they refused to go on the larger faster ship. The Beatties arrived at York in Upper Canada in August of 30. They were met by James' brother Andrew. They spent some time with him at the Junction while looking for property. In September of 30 James Beattie bought Lot West half, and Lots and 15 on Concession 2 in Westminster, a total of five hundred acres, from Joseph Webster. This property was next to Andrew Beattie's son William's property, Lot 16 Concession 2. Mr. Beattie paid $ 1,0.00 in gold for this property, described as first-rate medium clay soil with an even terrain, sloping slightly, and with large stands of timber and natural drainage to the south. The deposits of red clay on Lot 15 was used to build their brick house in 36. They called their farm on Lot 15, Castle Farm. Second Generation 8 20 Fred L. Appleton

James Beattie divided his five hundred acres among his children. Andrew took over Lot 15, Castle Farm. James gave Robert Lot on Concession 2 in 37. Robert died that year and his wife Margaret continued to live on this property with her children. James Jackson, who married a cousin of Robert's lived on this property in 42 when Margaret was the proprietor and he probably managed the farm. In 39 James Beattie transferred Lot West half Concession 2, to his daughter Helen (Ellen) and her husband Robert Shannon. This one hundred acres was not as large as the others that were two hundred acres each. James Beattie had already bought his son James two hundred acres, Lot North half on Concession 3 in Westminster, in 32. James Beattie and his wife died in Westminster Township, Middlesex County and they are buried in Pond Mills Cemetery. On Dec 1798 James married Margaret Oliver at Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland. 399 Margaret was born in Roberton Parish, Selkirkshire and Roxburghshire, Scotland, in 1777. Margaret died on 26 Jul 44. 23 Buried in Pond Mills Cemetery, Westminister Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. 23 Immigrated in 30 to Canada. 393 They had the following children: i. Helen [Ellen] (17 Sep 1799-79) ii. iii. William. William was born on 7 Jan 01. William died - Scotland. William was baptized on 19 Feb 01. Janet Anderson. Janet Anderson was born in Scotland in 02. Disembarking at Hamilton, Mrs. Beattie and her family proceeded to London, following plans they had prepared before leaving their homeland.
