Effective August 1, 2014, all Brevard County certified contractors are reminded to renew their Certificate of Competency Cards for the 2014/2015 renewal period. Courtesy renewal notices were mailed the week of July 21, 2014. Please contact our office at 321-633-2058 option 0 if you did not receive yours. KNOW YOUR SCOPE Contractor means the person who is qualified for, and authorized to obtain building permits, and shall only be responsible for the project contracted for and means, except as exempted in this part, the person who, for compensation, undertakes to, submits a bid to, advertises to, or does himself or by others construct, repair, alter, remodel, add to, demolish, subtract from or improve any building or structure, including related improvements to real estate, for others or for resale to others; and whose job scope is substantially similar to the job scope described in one of the paragraphs of this section. FEATURED TRADE: *** SWIMMING POOL/SPA SERVICING CONTRACTOR *** Swimming pool/spa servicing contractor means a contractor whose scope of work involves, but is not limited to, the repair and servicing of any swimming pool, or hot tub or spa, whether public or private, or otherwise, regardless of use. The scope of work includes the repair or replacement of existing equipment, any cleaning or equipment sanitizing which requires at least a partial disassembling, excluding filter changes, and the installation of new pool/spa equipment, interior refinishing, the reinstallation or addition of pool heaters, the repair or replacement of all perimeter piping and filter piping, the repair of equipment rooms or housing for pool/spa equipment, and the substantial or complete draining of a swimming pool, or hot tub or spa, for the purpose of any repair or renovation. Water treatment that does not require such equipment does not require a license. In addition, a license shall not be required for the cleaning of the pool or spa in any way that does not affect the structural integrity of the pool or spa or its associated equipment. Fire Fact: U.S. fire departments annually respond to an estimated average of 3,810 structure fires in dormitories, fraternities, sororities, and barracks. These fires caused an annual average of 2 civilian deaths, 30 civilian fire injuries, and $9.4 million in direct property damage. Note: Dormitories include school, college and university dormitories; fraternity and sorority houses; monasteries; bunk houses; barracks; and nurses quarters. Learn more about campus safety Off campus housing is gaining popularity as well. Learn more about Off Campus Safety Fire Fact: The fourth deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history, a blaze at The Station nightclub in W. Warwick, RI, on February 20, 2003, claimed 100 lives. Night Clubs and other large Assembly occupancies are very popular with college students. Learn more about Night Club and Assembly Occupancies Safety Reviewing Plans for Compliance with the Fire Code Part 2 Occupancy Classification- the first piece of information we look for is the occupancy classification. Chapter 6 of NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 101 in the FFPC (Florida Fire Prevention Code) gives the definitions of the specific occupancy types addressed in Chapters 12-42 of NFPA 101. Chapter 6 also gives the definitions of multiple occupancies, mixed occupancies and separated occupancies. Each Chapter gives the requirements particular for that occupancy and will refer to requirements in chapters 1-11 of NFPA 101. NFPA 1 of FFPC Chapter 20 lists additional requirements by occupancy classification. Chapters 21-35 list requirements for specific occupancies. FFPC may refer to one or more of NFPA 1-5000. Please note that the FBC (Florida Building Code) occupancy classification may not be the same as the FFPC occupancy classification. Please be sure of your FFPC occupancy classification as you review your plans for compliance with the FFPC. Electric Code Committee Meetings are located at the HBCA (1500 W. Eau Gallie Blvd.) on the second Wednesday of each month. Current topic for discussion and review is the upcoming NEC changes.
