t h e l a n d s e e r s t j o h n s w o o d Sir Edwin Landseer, who inspired the name of this development, was a prominent artist who lived in St John s Wood. He is most famous for his lion sculptures in Trafalgar Square. The location of St. John s Wood was once part of the Great Forest of Middlesex, densely populated with oak trees. The area's name dates back to medieval owners, the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, an Augustinian order, who in 1323, were bestowed the land by the Knights Templar. The land was acquired by the Crown, and remained so until 1688, but it was not until the nineteenth century that residential development was initiated, beginning to form the St John's Wood that we recognise today. This tranquil area of tree-line avenues, full of Italianate villas and Victorian gothic architecture boasting large gardens, attracted many who valued the charm of living in rural calm so close to the city. A plethora of artists, authors, philosophers and scientists throughout the nineteenth century selected St John s Wood to call their home. Joined by craftsmen and merchants, St John s Wood gained an unmistakable village atmosphere, which has not only survived but is still celebrated for its unique appeal to this day. L o r d s Lord's Cricket Ground has existed on its current site since 1814, but its roots stem back even further, to 1787, when a ground was first established by Thomas Lord in nearby Dorset Fields (now Dorset Square). About to celebrate two centuries of world-class cricket in St John's Wood, Lord's Cricket Ground, widely acknowledged as 'the home of cricket', remains as popular a destination as ever before.
