SBW Correspondence and other papers of Bishop Simon and Mrs Jean Barrington-Ward 63 items, 1970-1994 Presented by Bishop Simon and Mrs Jean Barrington-Ward, probably in Spring 2000 (Acc.19/7) Catalogued by Carol Pickering, volunteer, about November 2000 The papers mainly comprise letters sent to Revd Simon and Mrs Jean Barrington-Ward from overseas mission partners and friends during the time Simon was General Secretary of the Church Missionary Society, from 1975 to 1985. Simon Barrington-Ward was born in 1930. He obtained his B.A. at Magdalene College, Cambridge in 1953. After a short period spent in Berlin, he trained for the priesthood at Westcott House, being ordained in 1957. He was Chaplain of Magdalene College between 1956 and 1960, leaving to take up the post of lecturer in religious studies at University College, Ibadan, Nigeria. Returning to Cambridge, he was appointed a Fellow and Dean of Chapel Magdalene College in 1963 and later became the Principal of Crowther Hall, the Church Missionary Society Training College at Selly Oak, Birmingham. Between 1975 and 1985 he served as General Secretary of the Church Missionary Society. During these years, a period of missionary re-examination, he travelled worldwide to see the Society's activities and was also known for his deeply insightful and inspiring articles in the Society's Newsletter. In 1984-5 he also acted as a Chaplain to the Queen. He was consecrated Bishop of Coventry in 1985. At Coventry he continued to preach widely on the Church's mission and also took a leading part in a reconciling relationship of the City of Coventry with Dresden, which had each notoriously suffered from bombing during the War. At his retirement in 1997 he returned to Cambridge, accepting a post of Honorary Fellow and Chaplain at his old college. He was created Prelate of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George in 1988 and has been a member of the Prince of Wales Advisory Group on Islam. He was a trustee of the Henry Martyn Trust from 1998, chairman 2002-04. He is author of Love will Out:Anthology of Mission for Today s World:CMS Newsletters, 1975-1985 (Basingstoke, 1988) 1
