The Old Ship Hotel, Kings Road, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1NR Telephone: 01273 329001 This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all our guests and visitors. Introduction The Old Ship Hotel is right on the seafront perfect for an evening stroll along the promenade and close to events at the Brighton Centre. Parts of the building date from the 16th Century, but its architecture and character were defined in the Georgian era: the Prince Regent (later George IV) held his birthday party here in 1819. The hotel is situated on the sea front within walking distance to the town centre. We have 154 bedrooms, a gym and 10 meeting and function rooms. Throughout the hotel, there are steps leading to most facilities and where possible we are continuing to place ramps and lifts within the parameters of the hotel s listed building status. Car parking and Arrival There are 2 allocated blue badge parking spaces in the manned undercover on-site garage. It is advisable to pre book these spaces well in advance if required as they are released on a first come, first served basis. Spaces are also chargeable. The garage is located on the right hand side of the hotel. There is a bell at the entrance to the garage for assistance.
There is also parking in the large car park next to the hotel with blue badge parking spaces. There is level access to the hotel reception from the hotel garage parking. Porter service is available to help with luggage 24 hours a day. At the front of the hotel there are 3 steps with a handrail that lead to a revolving door to the hotel reception. For level entry at the front of the hotel, there is access via the bar and restaurant. There is a bell for assistance outside the bar entrance. Reception is on the ground floor and has level access throughout.
The reception area consists of patterned short pile carpet and light tiles. The area is lit by spot lights and overhead lights. There is additional seating in the reception area to check in. A familiarisation tour is available on request. We are able to provide a deafgard or vibrating pillow pad and our employees are trained to show you how to use it. We have a portable induction loop system and our employees are trained to use it. Lift to 5 floors, ground floor and gym This lift goes to bedrooms 101-124, 201-239, 301-331, 404-420, 504-520 and the gym. The lift door is 28 and the depth of the lift is 37. There is an alarm. There is good contrast with light walls, patterned short pile carpet and overhead lighting. Lift to 4 floors and ground floor This lift goes to bedrooms 126-155, 226-261, 326-351 and 426-451. The lift door is 30 and the depth of the lift is 38. There is an alarm. There is good contrast with light walls, patterned short pile carpet and overhead lighting. Lift to cellars, ground floor and 1st floor This lift goes to the conference and meeting rooms. The lift door is 30 and the depth of the lift is 53. There is an alarm and audible announcements. There is good contrast with wood walls, patterned short pile carpet and spot lights. Bedrooms There are 2 recently refurbished accessible bedrooms within the hotel (204 and 304). They are accessed via the lift or stairs.
There are no ground floor bedrooms within the hotel. Bedroom 204 and 304 The width of the bedroom door is 29 and the width of the bathroom door is 34. There is an alarm linked to the hotel reception in the bedroom and bathroom. There are 3 fixed rails and 1 drop down rail in the bathroom. The height of the toilet is 19. There is a mobile shower seat. The height of the double bed is 26. The height underneath the dressing table is 23. There is a lower rail in the wardrobe and a lower level spy hole in the door. There is a big button telephone. The electric sockets and light points are approximately 30 from the floor. There are some bedrooms within the hotel that are accessed by steps. In the other bathrooms throughout the hotel, the shower is located above the bath and rubber bath mats are provided.
Bedrooms offer the following: Lighting can be controlled at several points, there is good contrast between the floor, walls and doors, short pile carpet, all bedding is non feather, widescreen digital television with remote control and subtitles. Lounges There are a number of lounges on the ground floor that offer a wide range of seating. There is level access to all of these areas. Lighting is by spot lights and lamps and can be subdued in the evening. Steak-on-Sea Bar The Steak-on-Sea bar is located on the ground floor near the lounges and has level access. Service is usually at the bar, but drinks and food can be served at the table on request. We do our best to cater for any dietary requirements. Please contact us in advance with any specific requests. Where possible, all of our food produce is locally sourced. All employees can assist by running through the menus with you. The Steak-on-Sea Restaurant The Steak-on-Sea Restaurant is located on the ground floor and has level access throughout. There are large windows that overlook the sea. Lighting is by spot lights and overhead lighting and can be subdued in the evening.
The chairs are upright firm wooden chairs and the table linen provides a strong contrast with the dark carpet and wooden flooring. Breakfast is self-service, but drinks and food can be served at the table on request. We do our best to cater for any dietary requirements. Please contact us in advance with any specific requests. Accessible Toilet on the ground floor This toilet is situated on the ground floor in a wide corridor. The door is approximately 34 wide and there is level entry. Between the toilet and the wall is 47. The toilet height is 17. There are 3 fixed rails and 1 drop down rail. There is an emergency pull cord. There is fluorescent overhead lighting. The floor is non slip vinyl. The sink has a lever tap. There is good contrast between the flooring, walls and furnishings. The nearest accessible toilet is on the ground floor. The non-accessible toilets on the 1st floor are accessed by 2 steps. There are meeting room chairs with arms and standard function style chairs without arms used throughout our meetings and functions. Most of our meeting and function rooms have natural daylight.
The Cellars Private dining is available in our cellars on the lower ground floor. Access is via the lift or stairs. The Gym The gym is located on the lower ground floor and can be accessed via the stairs or lift. There is level access within the gym. There is a good contrast with the wooden flooring, light walls and equipment. This gym is unsupervised and the key is available from reception. Alfresco dining In good weather, dining is available outside the front of the hotel and there is level access.
Additional information All of our employees receive regular disability awareness training. We have a set of evacuation procedures. Should you require assistance, someone will come to your room and help you with evacuation either out of the building. We have an evac chair to assist. A water bowl is available just outside the main entrance for assistance dogs and one can be supplied for bedrooms where necessary. The hotel is dog friendly.
