Racinowski, Editor/Manager July 4th Fireworks Safety Starts with Common Sense Tips 11th Ward Holiday Hours Using consumer fireworks on our nation s birthday is as American as apple pie, backyard barbecues and parades on Main Street. And it is equally safe if a few common sense rules are followed, says Nancy Blogin, President of the National Council on Fireworks Safety. Nancy notes that thanks to testing of consumer fireworks in China, through the American Fireworks Standards Laboratory and other testing programs, and rigorous enforcement of federal fireworks regulations by the CPSC, consumer fireworks today are safer than ever before. But Nancy notes that fireworks related accidents do occur each year, however, most could be eliminated if some basic safety steps had been taken. The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these common sense safety tips for using consumer fireworks in the hopes that injuries to consumers can be greatly reduced this season: Parents and caretakers should always closely supervise teens if they are using fireworks. Parents should not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. Fireworks should only be used outdoors. Always have water ready if you are shooting fireworks. Know your fireworks.read the caution label before igniting. Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Wear safety glasses whenever using fireworks. Never relight a dud firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. Soak spent fireworks with water before placing them in an outdoor garbage can. Avoid using homemade fireworks or illegal explosives: They can kill you! Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department And note these special safety tips, if using sparklers: Always remain standing while using sparklers. Never hold a child in your arms while using sparklers. Never hold, or light, more than one sparkler at a time. Never throw sparklers. Sparkler wire and stick remain hot long after the flame has gone out. Be sure to drop spent sparklers in a bucket of water. Teach children not to wave sparklers, or run, while holding sparklers. The National Council on Fireworks Safety urges Americans to follow these common sense safety rules this Fourth of July in their holiday celebrations. WEDNESDAY JUNE 29th, 2016 The 4th Annual Midway Fly Away 5K Run/Walk 5K Family Run/Walk, held directly on the Midway Airport Airfield, to benefit SCC/Special Olympics Chicago. One of the most exciting and unique 5k races in the city The Midway Fly Away 5K Run/Walk - will return to the airfield of Midway International Airport on Sunday, September 18, with an all-new one-mile kids race, The Midway Miler, added to the festivities. Now in its fourth annual year, the Midway Fly Away 5K Run/Walk offers runners and walkers of all fitness levels the opportunity to walk directly on the airfield of Midway International Airport. The Midway Fly Away 5K will once again benefit the SCC/Special Olympics Chicago. Registration in advance of the event is $40 for adults, and $20 for children 16 & under; The Midway Miler, open to kids 10 and under, is $15 per child. New this year, on-site registration will be available for $50 for adults. Registration is now open by visiting www.sochicago.org. At that website, participants can create a personal fundraising page where supporters can make tax deductible donations. Registered participants will receive a souvenir race t-shirt, post-race refreshments and free parking in the Midway Airport Economy Parking lot, located across the street from the Southwest Airlines Hangar, at 5050 West 55th Street. A variety of pre-race activities, including raffles with amazing prizes, as well as a myriad of family activities such as face painting, balloon animals, and much more, will take place at the event hangar on the airfield. The Midway runner, the person who places in the middle of the race, will also win Southwest Airlines tickets. Those who raise more than $250 will automatically be entered to win two round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States that Southwest Airlines flies with no restrictions or blackout dates. First place male and female winners will also be awarded a prize package. New this year, medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place male and female winners in a variety of age groups. All registered participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Doors to the Southwest Airlines hangar will open at 8 am. The Southwest Airlines Hangar is located at 5035 West 55th Street at Midway Airport. Upon arrival, participants will be shuttled to the event hangar on the airfield. All participants are required to bring a photo id for check-in, and must arrive prior to 8:30 am. Shuttle service will end promptly at 8:30 am. No backpacks/bags will be allowed on the course, however, there will be gear check available the day of the race. No wheels, including strollers, bicycles, tricycles, rollerblades, inline skates, will be allowed on the airfield. Special Olympics was born in Chicago at Soldier Field 48 years ago, in 1968. The Chicago program is now the largest in the State of Illinois. Today, there are more than 4.2 million athletes that take part in Special Olympics programs internationally. The Midway Fly Away 5K is presented by the Chicago Department of Aviation at Midway International Airport, Southwest Airlines, and Special Children s Charities/Special Olympics Chicago. Three De La Salle Student-Athletes Chosen to All-Chicago Catholic League Team De La Salle Institute proudly announces that three members of its baseball team were chosen to the 2016 All-Chicago Catholic League Team. Honored were senior infielder, Tom Duddleston; senior infielder, Josh Figueroa; and senior catcher, Justin Jackson. De La Salle finished its season with an overall record of 18-16 and advanced to the Illinois High School Association Class 3A Crestwood Supersectional before a loss to eventual state champion Lemont ended the campaign. The celebration was held on Monday, June 27 with the unveiling at 4:30 p.m. The new sculptures include Monet by Gary Lee Price and Girl in a Wetsuit by Elek Imredy. Price s Monet captures the Father of Impressionism as he works in a garden on his next great masterpiece. Price was inspired by Monet s role as a great contributor to society and the world of art. Imredy s Girl in a Wetsuit depicts a woman in a wetsuit with flippers and a diving mask. This sculpture is a commissioned reproduction of the original, which sits on a boulder off the shore of Stanley Park, Vancouver, British Columbia. It was placed there June 9, 1973. This sculpture has been fondly called Canada s Little Mermaid. Tripp Lite s latest acquisitions join other pieces installed on the property: Confluence, Quasi Möbius Strip and You Are My Sunshine. The collection connects the company to Bridgeport s growing artists community. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) in partnership with Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies and Black & Veatch officially opened the world's largest nutrient recovery facility recently at the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) in Cicero. The MWRD is dedicated to becoming the utility of the future, said MWRD President Mariyana Spyropoulos. Ostara's technology is a solution to managing the overabundance of phosphorus while creating a revenue stream through the sale of the fertilizer. This is a win for the environment & a win for Cook County taxpayers. MWRD s new nutrient recovery facility is an example of how progressive technology can be implemented to transform a wastewater treatment facility into a resource recovery center, providing significant environmental benefits to the Chicago Area Waterway System and downstream to the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. Through Ostara s technology, phosphorus and nitrogen will be recovered to create a high value fertilizer, marketed as Crystal Green.The process is both economically and environmentally viable. The new facility has a production capacity of 10,000 tons of Crystal Green per year. As part of the commercial sale of Crystal Green, the MWRD will receive revenue for every ton of fertilizer it produces. By removing phosphorus from the water and returning it to farmers and other agricultural producers, this facility represents a significant shift in the wastewater industry from treatment to recovery for reuse. While excess phosphorous discharged to waterways can contribute to water quality problems, it is also a non-renewable resource which is essential for life. It is estimated that there are fewer than 50 years of phosphorus reserves remaining worldwide.most phosphorus is sourced from rock mines and must be transported considerable distances. Closer to home, however, this renewed water stewardship will pay an instant impact on area waterways, especially in Chicago, where river walks are being constructed and recreational use of the Chicago River and area waterways has increased dramatically in recent years. Cleaned water from Stickney WRP is released into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal southwest of the Chicago River so taking proactive steps in protecting the local watershed continues to be a priority for the MWRD. Designed to treat up to 1.44 billion gallons of water each day and serving a population equivalent to 2.3 million residents including the central part of Chicago and 46 suburban communities, the Stickney WRP discharges into the Chicago and Sanitary and Ship Canal, making it the largest water reclamation plant in the world. While tending to my garden west of Halsted the morning after arriving home from my trip, I was greeted by my old friends the English House Sparrow, House Finch, Cardinal, Mourning Dove, Common Grackle, and Starlings that frequent my backyard fence, feeder, and telephone wires. Although Bridgeport is a beautiful neighborhood with many lovely parks, it lacks many of the features that attract birds to other Chicago neighborhoods- namely proximity to Lake Michigan. So how does a Bridgeport denizen attract birds? This edition of the Bridgeport Birder will discuss this very issue. Like many of us, the best way to a bird s heart is through her stomach and thus the best way to attract birds to your yard is to put up a bird feeder. There are three elements to consider when erecting a feeder; the type of feeder, the type of food, and the location of the feeder. The type of feeder, in my opinion, is not important as long as it is squirrel proof. I have a three tiered tube feeder and it is quite popular. The type of food used depends on the type of feeder. Dry bird food which can be used in a tube feeder, for example, comes in many forms. Sunflower seeds are a favorite of a great variety of birds, while nyjer, for example, specifically attracts finches. Suet is a type of patty made from beef fat that many birders favor. Suet also attracts a variety of birds and requires a mesh hanging feeder made specifically to hold suet. Many birds prefer fruit such as apples and halved oranges. The next thing to consider is the location of the feeder. Do not hang a feeder off of your garage as the rumble of the door opening and closing may scare birds. Hanging a feeder off of a tree branch is a safe bet. Another way to attract birds is to plant native species. Although many local birds such as the Starling and House Sparrow are not native to North America, most of the local species you would likely see in your yard are. These birds evolved to feel themselves at home among native species. Planting native species also allows for zero or reduced pesticide use in maintenance, which leaves a positive ecological footprint, birding aside. The next tip for attracting birds goes hand in hand with planting native species: don t be afraid to get a little wild. Leaving fallen branches and brush piles will foster natural decay that perpetuates the natural cycle that supports birds. Finally, keep predators in check. Here is their story... Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants. Nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.the enemy jailed his wife and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. Nine adult learners were celebrated for their graduation from Aquinas English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Virginia Mercado, one of the graduates, was awarded the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship. Each year ALC awards the scholarship to a graduate who goes above and beyond the average student. The scholarship was created in memory of Sister Claudia Hinds, the Adrian Dominican Sister who founded ALC. Scholarship funds are used to further the student s education in English. According to Alison Altmeyer, the Executive Director of ALC, As a staff, we selected Virginia as the recipient of the Sister Claudia Hinds Scholarship because of her persistence in learning English. In her three years at Aquinas, Virginia committed herself to attending one-on-one tutoring sessions, participating in supplemental classes and studying English in our Computer Learning Center. She has truly embraced our mission. While dedicating herself to learning English, Virginia volunteered as ALC s Spanish Literacy Instructor, helping Aquinas lowest level learners transition to English instruction. In early 2016, Virginia also offered a workshop to her peers about taking advantage of the resources at ALC. Upon receiving the scholarship, Virginia said, I studied at the Center for three years and now I feel very confident speaking English. I m able to take the bus to my job and I can answer the phone in English and write down the orders [at my job]. Virginia also encouraged her fellow adult learners. Do not be afraid to learn, just keep ahead. When you fall, get up. Remember that you can do it. Virginia will use the scholarship to take ESL classes at Arturo Velasquez Institute.
