Bulford War Graves Lest We Forget World War 1 1874 PRIVATE F. J. BEATTIE 41ST BN. AUSTRALIAN INF. 17TH APRIL, 1917 AGE 29 The Lord Gave And The Lord Hath Taken Away

Frederick Joseph BEATTIE Frederick Joseph Beattie was born in 1886 in Brisbane, Queensland to parents Joseph & Mary Beattie (nee Lawrie). Frederick Joseph Beattie attended Woolloongabba School. Frederick Joseph Beattie married Eva Brady on 1 st December, 1909 in Queensland. Births were registered in Queensland for Thelma Irene Mary Beattie (born 1910) & Frederick Thomas Oakley Beattie (born 1914). Frederick Joseph Beattie was a 29 year old, married, Stockman from Brisbane, Queensland when he enlisted on 12 th February, 1916 at Brisbane with the 49 th Infantry Battalion, 3 rd Reinforcements of the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.). His service number was 1874 & his religion was Church of England. His next of kin was listed as his wife Mrs Eva Beattie of Malcome Street, Hawthorn, Bulimba, Brisbane, Queensland. Frederick Beattie stated that he had previously been rejected as unfit for His Majesty s Service due to Hydrocele. Pte Frederick Joseph Beattie embarked from Brisbane on HMAT Clan McGillivray (A46) on 1 st May, 1916 & disembarked at Egypt on 13th June, 1916. Pte Beattie embarked from Alexandria on 6 th August, 1916 on Troopship Megantic. Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire. Pte Beattie was transferred to 41 st Battalion (11 th Training Battalion) from 13 th Training Battalion on 23 rd September, 1916. Private Frederick Joseph Beattie was appointed to Lance Corporal on 12 th March, 1917. Private Frederick Joseph Beattie died on 17 th April, 1917 at the Military Hospital, Bulford, Wiltshire from Pneumonia. A death for Frederick J. Beattie, aged 30, was registered in the June quarter, 1917 in the district of Amesbury, Wiltshire. Private Frederick Joseph Beattie was buried in Bulford Church Cemetery, Wiltshire Grave No. 3 Plot C Australian Reserve Section (CWGC Plot number 3. I. 3.) and has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone. Pte Frederick Joseph Beattie did not execute a Will. An advertisement was placed in the Newspapers for the next-of-kin of the late Pte F. J. Beattie. Pte Beattie s father wrote to Base Records, having seen the advertisement & advised them that the widow of Pte Beattie had remarried & he had no communication with her. A Marriage was registered in Queensland in 1917 between Eva Beattie & Henry Arthur Thomas. Mrs Eva Thomas contacted Base Records in May, 1918 to advise them of her whereabouts. War Pensions were granted to the following in respect of the service of the late Pte Frederick Joseph Beattie: Eva Beattie, widow - 2 per fortnight, granted from 21 st June, 1917. Thelma Irene May Beattie, Daughter - 1 per fortnight, granted from 21 st June, 1917. Fredk. Thos. Oakley, Son 15/- per fortnight, granted from 21 st June, 1917.

Private F. J. Beattie is commemorated on the Roll of Honour, located in the Hall of Memory Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, Australia on Panel 133. Private F. Pte Frederick Joseph Beattie was entitled to British War Medal only as he had not entered a Theatre of War. A Memorial Scroll & Memorial Plaque were also sent to Pte Beattie s widow Mrs E. Thomas (Remarried) (both sent January, 1922) The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists Private Frederick Joseph Beattie service number 1874 as being 29 years old & served with 41 st Battalion, Australian Infantry. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Beattie; husband of Eva Thomas (formerly Beattie) of Belwood, Belmont, Brisbane, Queensland. Born at Queensland. Commonwealth War Graves Commission Headstones The Defence Department, in 1920/21, contacted the next of kin of the deceased World War 1 soldiers to see if they wanted to include a personal inscription on the permanent headstone in Bulford Church Cemetery. Space was reserved for 66 letters only (with the space between any two words to be counted as an additional letter) & the rate per letter was around 3 ½ d (subject to fluctuation). The expense in connection for the erection of permanent headstones over the graves of fallen soldiers was borne by the Australian Government.
