Between 2003 and 2013 Mark worked with Perumal Pedavoli Architects and with Studio [R] Architecture and Design, where he became Associate in 2007. During these 10 years of practice Mark has demonstrated design excellence through his roles as Design Architect and Project Architect for a large body of built work for residential, commercial, retail, industrial, educational, and government clients. Many of these projects have been published both locally and internationally, and have received a number of architectural awards. Mark is currently principal of Mark Szczerbicki Design Studio, which he established in 2013. Based in Sydney, the studio offers a full range of services and operates within a wide spectrum of site, budget, social/cultural and planning control frameworks. Mark is a Registered Architect in NSW and his practice is an A+ Member of the Institute of Architects. Mark s architectural approach is based on design research and collaboration, which allows his studio to operate simultaneously at many scales and to pursue interests ranging from art, furniture and lighting design, through to urban planning and adaptive re-use. Recent examples of successful collaborative projects include the winning scheme for the new Gosford Regional Theatre in 2013 in association with Perumal Pedavoli Architects, and 2 nd place in the Freefall Design Competition for the National Arboretum in Canberra in 2014 in association with Woolacotts Consulting Engineers. Mark has also participated in many international competitions, with a First Honourable Mention in the Machu Picchu Tourist Lodge competition, and more recently a special jury prize from a jury lead by Daniel Libeskind in the WWII Museum Competition in Gdansk, Poland. As well as architectural practice, Mark maintains an active involvement in architectural education. Mark has been a design tutor at UTS, the University of Sydney, and UNSW. Between 2011 and 2013 Mark was coordinator of the 3 rd year Urban Studio at UNSW, run in parallel with the Rural Studio led by Glenn Murcutt. Mark is currently a tutor in advanced modelmaking at UTS, and teaching a 5 th year graduation studio at UNSW, which he will also be cocoordinating in 2015. Since 2011 Mark has been an organiser of the Urban Islands Masters Studio an independent cross university program that brings renowned architectural practitioners from around the world to Sydney's Cockatoo Island. The program is the only one of its kind in Australia and has attracted guests such as Flores & Prats from Spain and Nat Chard from the UK. Many of the Urban Islands alumni are now influential and award-winning practitioners. Mark s involvement in the architectural community has been significant. He was the recipient of the Byera Hadley Travelling Scholarship in 2007, and based on the resultant research he designed and curated a major exhibition at Sydney s Customs House as part of the Sydney Architecture Festival and Art & About program in 2009. Mark assisted the Board of Architects in NSW in developing their Architecture Insights website, and participated in workshops with NSW High Schools to develop the NSW design curriculum. Mark was invited by the City of Sydney to curate further exhibitions exploring the urban fabric of Sydney, and has been invited to lecture at the Sydney Architecture Festival and at various Board of Architects events. SELECTED BUILT PROJECTS HOUSES PARTY WALL HOUSE An extensive re-modelling of a historical terrace house in Birchgrove, originally built in 1885. The concept for the project is to use a 90cm wide strip of space along the common wall to house as many functions as possible, in order to free up the rest of the space. This 'thick wall' includes vertical circulation, kitchen, bbq area, storage, toilets, laundry, skylight, AV/data hub, and a wine cellar. The renovation gives a new life to this heirloom. RODD POINT HOUSE A two-stage project to transform an existing 2-bedroom cottage into a 4-bedroom house. The design maximises space and natural light by opening onto landscaped courtyards on the northern and southern side, and by the introduction of a large void space above the dining room. The dining room extends through an outdoor kitchen and terminates with an in-situ concrete garage and carport. A simple roof form floats above the dark first floor cladding with an exaggerated eave overhang providing weather and sun protection to the interior. DRUMMOYNE HOUSE The principal organising element of the house is a two-storey high entry volume which extends out into a shallow pond and water feature in the back yard. The entry allows for vertical circulation via an open stair and is crossed by a bridge linking the first floor living and kitchen areas. Bedrooms are positioned on the ground floor and open onto landscaped courtyards, while elevating the living spaces above to capture panoramic views of the surrounding area, the Harbour Bridge and CBD. HUNTLEYS COVE CAR MUSEUM CONVERSION A unique bespoke garage/museum building in Huntleys Cove housed a collection of racing cars. Our client purchased the building and asked for it to be converted to a residence while retaining the character and features of the original structure. A new kitchen and study space were added on the lower level, while the existing upper level mezzanine was subdivided into bedrooms. The steel spiral staircase was re-positioned as a feature of the new living/dining space, which doubles as parking for a Harley Davidson.

SELECTED BUILT PROJECTS PUBLIC AND COMMERCIAL PICCOLA SCUDERIA FERRARI Conversion of a warehouse into a state-of-the-art showroom and workshop for a boutique Ferrari dealership. A dramatic new two-storey high cobblestone-paved car stable is created to face the street. A sculptural timber-clad stair houses a merchandise display and leads up to a new office space on the first floor. The existing saw-tooth roof is retained for the workshop with new hoists and workshop spaces added. HIGH STREET SHOPPING ARCADE BOWRAL with Studio [R] Architecture + Design A new open-air shopping arcade connects the main street of Bowral with the public carpark. Designed as a series of shops and restaurants linking a series of courtyards and a public piazza. The arcade has been named High Street and has become a key through-link for the town s pedestrians. First floor office spaces complete the mix of retail and commercial spaces. The project has been widely published as an example of urban re-generation including in Green City - Contemporary Urban Design, Monsa Publishing, Barcelona. SYDNEY THEATRE BAR AT THE END OF THE WHARF with Studio [R] Architecture + Design and Alice Babidge Designed in collaboration with Sydney Theatre s set designer Alice Babidge, the new bar has been skillfully integrated into the heritage-listed fabric of the original finger wharf. Utilising an industrial aesthetic and custom-made detailing, the bar services theatre patrons, hosts musical concerts and performances. The Bar was officially openend by Sydney Thetare creative directors Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton in 2012. DUBBO REGIONAL THEATRE AND CONVENTION CENTRE with Perumal Pedavoli Architects A new state-of-the-art theatre facility for the Dubbo community. The project contains a 500-seat tiered theatre with state-of-the art facilities including a comprehensive, computerised sound and lighting control room, box office, acoustically designed auditorium, hydraulic orchestra pit, fly tower, dressing rooms, green room and refreshment bar. Since opening in April 2010, the theatre has attracted over 312,000 visitors and participants for shows, events, conferences and functions.

COMPETITIONS KINETIC CANOPY LOOKOUT Competition / 2nd Place A competition entry in collaboration with Woolacotts Consulting Engineers for a new feature for the National Arboretum in Canberra. An exciting engineering solution that embraces form, scale and technology to create a very special visitor experience - an organic viewing platform that rises from the forest floor using hydraulic principles, lifting the visitor up to view the forest and arboretum. The proposal celebrates the story and potential of engineering. GOSFORD REGIONAL PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE Invited Competition / 1st Place Mark Szczerbicki Design Studio collaborated with Perumal Pedavoli Architects on this winning scheme for a new Gosford Regional Performing Arts Centre. The project includes a new tiered theatre as well as a conservatorium of music. The judging panel selected this concept design, which was found to have the best vision in terms of innovation, energy efficiency, architecture and planning. WORLD WAR II MUSEUM IN GDANSK, POLAND Competition / Jury Prize This competition entry was a collaboration with Tom Rivard and Cundall ESD Consultants. The competition jury, chaired by Daniel Libeskind, commended our scheme along with the citation: This somehow whimsical entry stood out for its richness and narrative of presentation, bringing a very personal approach to the challenge of representing the anguish of war. The architectural expression represents the most extreme human suffering of the 20th century. TEACHING URBAN ISLANDS URBAN ISLANDS Masters Studio Urban Islands is a unique, independent cross university program that brings renowned architectural practitioners from around the world to Sydney's Cockatoo Island. Guest tutors each run an intensive 12 day workshop based on and about Cockatoo. Through processes of inhabitation and insinuation, each studio questions the nature of place making in an increasingly mediated world. The studio runs on a biennial basis, and is organised by Tom Rivard, Mark Szczerbicki and Olivia Hyde. 2013 Urban Islands Reviews, Flores & Prats Studio Group For full details see www.urbanislands.net

TEACHING STUDIO COORDINATION AND TUTORING 3rd YEAR URBAN DESIGN STUDIO 5tH YEAR GRADUATION STUDIO Mark has been a design tutor at UTS, the University of Sydney, and UNSW. Between 2011 and 2013 Mark was coordinator of the 3rd year Urban Studio at UNSW, run in parallel with the Rural Studio led by Glenn Murcutt. Mark is currently a tutor in advanced modelmaking at UTS, and teaching a 5th year graduation studio at UNSW, which he will also be co-coordinating in 2015. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT EXHIBITIONS THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME Exhibition Design and Curation/ Sydney Architecture Festival Using projects by architecture students from UNSW, UTS and the University of Sydney, along with key visions included in City of Sydney s Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan, the exhibition followed in the footsteps of imaginary city dwellers as they explored Sydney in 2030 through a variety of graphic and video media. An urban narrative by Tom Rivard of Lean Productions traced a graphic path through Customs House. TESTING REALITY Exhibition Design and Curation/ Sydney Architecture Festival The exhibition explored the changing role of the model in today s architectural practice. The focus of the presented material shifted from the usual static display of abstract objects to an interactive exploration of the processes, techniques, materials and people involved in the creation of architectural models. A modernist building designed in the late 1940 s by the iconic Australian architect Harry Seidler the Marcus Seidler House became the focus of a series of architectural models. PUBLISHED WORKS + PRESS Mark s work has been widely published in local architectural magazines such as Houses, Architectural Review and Architecture Australia. He has been interviewed in news publications including the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Telegraph. Selected projects have also been published overseas by Monsa (designoriented publishing house based in Barcelona) and Japan Architect Magazine. Recently the Urban Islands Masters Studio was featured on Sydney radio station 2UE. The studio has also been featured in the book titled Landscape Futures by Urban Islands past guest and founder of BLDGBLOG Geoff Manaugh. Mark s exhibition work for the City of Sydney will be included in the upcoming book Curating Sydney: Imagining the city s Future published by UNSW.
