TriangleOrchidSociety.org Orchidacea May 2017 Page The Orchid Society of the Triangle (Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill) and surrounding area of North Carolina Associated with Sarah P. Duke Gardens Orchidacea Monthly Newsletter of the Triangle Orchid Society May 2017 Harry Gallis: Novelty Phalaenopsis Recent Trends in Hybrids and Their AOS Awards May 8, 2017, 7:30 PM In the mid-20th century, novelty Phalaenopsis orchids were generally small flowered primary hybrids. Around 1980, many new forms of Phalaenopsis violacea and bellina were imported from Malaysia. In addition, Phalaenopsis venosa made its entry along with Phalaenopsis micholitzii. The decision by the USDA to allow importation of plants in sphagnum moss led to an explosion of imports from Taiwan. Initially, these flowers were for the mass markets, and later chance mutations led to the harlequin forms. More recently, the reinfusion of improved forms of Phalaenopsis bellina and violacea into novelty hybrids with compact inflorescences has led to great interest by boutique hybridizers and hobby growers. This presentation will touch on this history and explore recent trends in these hybrids and their AOS awards. Visitors are Welcome!
