The origins of New Zealand Diplomacy R. M. DALZIEL Lecturer in History at Auckland University In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries most New Zealanders still thought of themselves as 'colonists' and called their country 'the colony'. But there were signs of change, reflected in the developing role of the New Zealand Agent General's office in London between 1870 and 1905. Five men held the office of Agent General in London: Featherston, Vogel, Dillon Bell, Perceval and Pember Reeves.
