Connect with us @ www.insideoutside.in In the 21st century, one of the remarkable changes taking place in the urban landscape is the sheer expansion of it. Cities are where we increasingly live, earn, are educated and entertained. There are many who would not be able to live outside the excitments of our fastpaced cities. But at the same time, more and more people feel the need to escape the frenetic pace of our cities, take a breather, connect with nature. We have featured many such natural getaways over the years and increasingly in our recent issues. This issue s pièce de résistance comes from Sri Lanka, in a resort virtually hewn into a rocky hillside and hidden by curtains of ferns and creepers. While we are creating nature escapes, we are also preserving what we have in such abundance. Architects Anjali and Kiran Kalamdani have worked over 120 sites, from community precincts like Shaniwar Wada in Poona to the colonial Mahabaleshwar club to a beautiful Parsi villa in Bombay. Then there are those who are creating eccentric beauty from things that we would normally throw away. From an energetic designer from fragments of all kinds in Singapore to textile art, artists of collages of leftover textiles in Bombay, remind us both that we could consume less and reuse more. In addition to the roof above our heads to pavilions and museums, architecture is not anything if it is not memory and history. This week we feature The Punjab State War Heroes Memorial & Museum in Amritsar to record and honour the memory of the Sikhs who have contributed to various war efforts for their country. Hope you enjoy the issue. 15 inside outside august 2018

Shri Sakhargad Niwasini Devi Temple The Conservation Process When conserving a structure the architects keep in mind the original materials (such as basalt stone, wood, clay tiles) and techniques of working with those materials; modern materials are used only if they have been tested over a period of time or are compatible with the overall architecture of the structure. The Kalamdanis restored Jer Villa (built 1907) after a detailed `non-destructive testing of all timbers in the walls and roofs was undertaken. Wherever necessary the timbers were partially replaced or grouted with epoxy resin and wherever possible they were strengthened using steel plates. The restoration of floors, plaster, roofing tiles, doors and windows, railings and staircases, balconies and stained glasses was undertaken systematically, and electrical switches and light fittings, toilet finishes and plumbing fittings were handpicked to suit the originals. A conscious policy of retaining the originals to the extent possible was adopted Work often has to proceed with care especially in the case of structures that are in 80 inside outside august 2018
