Something for Terrestrial Orchids and Garden Plants Dr. George Tsambourkis Banana Peel - Part 1 It may sound odd to some, but Banana peel has been used in gardening for quite some time. It is not widely known because the users do not talk about it. People suffering from Potassium deficiency know quite well that Bananas are the best source of Potassium and they do eat a Banana a day (Doctors orders). Bananas of course are rich not only in Potassium, but also in Phosphorus, both important macronutrients. AOC & QOS AWARDS Growers Please Note: As from MAY 2O10, the Fees for Award Judging must be paid immediately after an Award is granted to an Orchid. The Fees for QOS Award Judging are $10 The Fees for an AOC Award Judging are $38.50 and $11 for a second Award on the same plant. AWARD JUDGING REQUIREMENT 24 hours notice is required for Award Judging at Q.O.S. meetings 48 hours notice is required for Award Judging at all other venues. For QOS Awards please contact Athol Rosenberg Phone 4635 2274 Or the area Representative For AOC Awards please contact Les Vickers -Phone 3396 8060 That makes Banana peel an ideal additive to a Potting mix. Normally, to use them in a garden, you cut the banana peel into small pieces and mix them up with the soil (should not be exposed). However, when you grow orchids you cannot add fresh pieces into the potting mix, because that will create unwanted problems. I am told, because I have never used Banana peel myself, that you dry the peels, then you grind them to a coarse grained material, like coarse sugar, and then you use them. Dry Banana peel is very hard, like dry hardwood, and therefore difficult to break or use as is.
