(from the book HISTORY & FAMILIES OLDHAM COUNTY, KENTUCKY by OLDHAM COUNTY Historical Society)...the story of the first Presbyterian Church in Goshen whose origins go back 150 years...one of the earliest Presbyterian churches in the state of KENTUCKY, organized in 1825...first place of meeting was a community center...then a log structure which burned in 1887..new bldg. built that same year sold at auction 1984...in the 1890's a chapel was established at the foot of Goshen Lane...at first it was called West Goshen Presbyterian Church...later it was renamed Rule Memorial Chapel in honor of its founder, the Rev. John Rule. It was also called "The Bottom Church". In 1956 the church closed. There is nothing left of this chapel now except the trees and flowers that once surrounded it. Church of LaGrange. No dates. I have also learned that the Bible was found in the old log cabin where 3 of Elias's grandchildren lived in 1950. It is noted the cabin was on the left of Old River Rd leaving Louisville and crossing into Oldham Co line. I am anxious to find more info on Elias and his wife Mary Adams. It was note that Elias's parents were John and Margaret Barrick Huffman. Any info that anyone has on this Huffman lineage would be more than appreciated. worked with the Red Cross, and other work before her marriage. Her family moved to Millport, Ala after her husbands retirement from the Navy where he had farm land. She taught in the schools there for several years. They moved to St Simons Is, Ga where she taught school and Owen worked at Glenco Navy Air Base. They retired and moved back to Millport. Byrd had an art studio added to the home place on Black St. and taught painting classes to the locals in the small town. Some of her paintings were purchased and hung in several businesses and she was hired to do a Mural for a bank over in Columbus, Miss. Her most famous painting to the family was that of "Fleetwood", the old Smith home place in Belton, SC. Her husbands health and her health began to fail before it was completed. The painting of the house is just as her children and her sisters children remember it. Her Neice Connie encouraged her and gave her photos to start the painting. Connie has it in her home in Williamston, SC. Byrd is in an assisted living home in Fayette, Ala. 8. His father and mother, Henry Bell and Josephine Stonestreet Huffman died in Athens Alabama and are burried in the Athens Cemetery in Limestone County. Henry Bell died 1951 and Josie died 1953. They are in lot 1237 right next to my grandparents, R B Stonestreet and Mary Rose Huffman. R. B.'s parents were James Andrew and Josephine Ray Stonestreet. I believe the parents of Josie Stonestreet gave my Grandfather an opportunity to go to school to learn to read and write in exchange for chores.
