Musicality Musicality is a vocal ensemble based out of Curie High School which will appear at the Chinatown Summer Fair on Sunday, July 16th at 1:15pm on the Main Stage at 23rd St. & Wentworth. In 2008, music teacher Michael Gibson saw so much musical potential and passion in his students that he decided to start an after school group dedicated to singing. That group became Musicality, a safe haven where students could express themselves through music. Musicality even became a second family for many of the members. During the past eight years, the group has continued to spread their love of music through live concert performances, music videos and studio recordings. Musicality currently has 16 members ranging from ages 15 through 19. They were most recently semifinalists on NBC s hit series America's Got Talent where they performed at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. They are also a recent recipient of a grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are winners of the 2017 Young Entertainers Awards Scholarship. Join us as we welcome Musicality to the Main Stage at the Chinatown Summer Fair. NEWS 3506 S. Santa Lucia School Visits Lake Katherine The children participating in the S.E.E.P. program at Santa Lucia School took a fascinating trip to Palos Heights last week. Students went on a nature hike, and also learned about gardens, wetlands, woodlands, and prairie habitats as well as the creatures that inhabit these areas. While at the Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens, the children hiked through the beautiful grounds and gardens and saw beautiful Lake Katherine with its lovely waterfalls. The students observed some of the natural wildlife during their hike. Guides taught the children all about preserving these natural habitats and wildlife. Students got hands on with various small creatures found in the habitat, and even did some role playing as specific animals. It was great to teach students that so many interesting and beautiful places really do exist not far from their own back yards! About 260,000 taxpayers paid this year s First Installment for Tax Year 2016 using cookcountytreasurer.com, a 13.2 percent jump from last year s Second Installment. Property owners are embracing the trend toward online payments and we are moving right along with them, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said today, noting that payment can be made from any computer, smart phone or tablet. The bills were mailed to 1.75 million owners of homes, businesses and land with a due date of August 1, 2017. For owners who prefer to receive bills by email, the Treasurer s Office has introduced electronic billing. An ebilling account can be set up using an enrollment form at cookcountytreasurer.com. Property owners can also download a copy of their bill by going to the website, clicking on Make an Online Payment and entering their Property Index Number (PIN.) Information about other ways to pay can be found on the bills and the website. Owners should pay their taxes before the due date to avoid interest of 1.5 percent per month, as mandated by state law.

One cool judgement is worth a thousand hasty counsels. The thing to be supplied is light, not heat. Woodrow Wilson Back 2 School Illinois Launches Contest to Surprise Two Chicago Schools with Free Supplies for Every Student This Fall Back 2 School Illinois (B2SI), is a Chicago based nonprofit that provides tens of thousands of deserving kids from low income families with free school supplies to help them succeed in the classroom. B2SI is pleased to announce the launch of this year s Win School Supplies for Every Student in a School contest. Back 2 School Illinois holds the contest annually, in which the students of two Chicago schools win free school supplies. Each and every child at both of the winning schools receives their own B2SI kit, loaded with the core supplies they need for the year. Applications for 2017 must be postmarked by July 24th in order to qualify for the contest. Anyone can nominate a Chicago school and there is no limit to how many times a school can be nominated. Whether you are a parent, community leader, concerned citizen, student or member of a faculty, you can enter the contest on behalf of a school. The two winning Chicago schools will be selected over the summer and notified by August 7th. During the first week of classes this fall, the student bodies of both winning schools will be surprised by Back 2 School Illinois with the delivery of the free school supplies. While most students strive for success in the classroom, it can sometimes prove difficult when they don t have the necessary school supplies. With B2SI s annual contest, underserved Chicago students from the two winning schools are given the tools they need to thrive in the classroom. Providing these kits the first week of school lets the students know that they deserve a good education. There are over 1.2 million students in Illinois living in low income households. Last year alone, B2SI provided more than 890,000 school supplies to these students, says Back 2 School Illinois CEO, Matthew Kurtzman, Continuing programs such as the yearly contest allows B2SI to provide nearly 1,000 students in the first week with the supplies to begin their school year motivated and prepared. To date, almost 5 million school supplies have been given to in need children to ensure their academic careers are on a path to success. However, B2SI works to provide students with more than just supplies. The tools given out provide students with a sense of ease and confidence as they walk into school. To learn more, visit www.b2si.org. For more information on the contest please visit http://b2si.org/win school supplies for an entireschool contest. Wilson Playground News John P. Hot Topic: Summer Safety Summer is a time for family road trips, outdoor fun in the sun and hopefully lots of great weather. Here are some simple reminders to prepare for safe summer days: Stay cool in the heat: Keep cool and hydrated and minimize your time in the sun between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Drink plenty of water, find shade, visit cool buildings, slow down, bathe in cool water and wear light coloured clothing. Never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle. When the outside air temperature is 23 C/73 F, the temperature inside a vehicle can be extremely dangerous more than 50 C/122 F. When thunder roars, go indoors: Stay inside for at least 30 minutes after the last rumble of thunder. If you can hear thunder, you can get hit by lightning. Take shelter immediately in a sturdy, fully enclosed building with wiring and plumbing. If no solid building is available, you can take shelter in a metal roofed vehicle. Read more about severe summer weather. Stay safe while camping: If strong winds, hail or a tornado is developing while you are camping in a tent or tent trailer, move to the closest building or a hard topped vehicle. Make every effort to get to a suitable shelter. If no shelter is available, seek refuge deep in a thick stand of trees in the lowest lying area. Environment Canada has more summer weather safety tips. Avoid the bugs and their bite: Avoid being outdoors at dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. Keep in mind that ticks are often found along trail edges, mostly in wooded areas or tall grass. Light coloured clothing is less attractive to mosquitoes and allows you to see ticks more easily. Use an approved and safe insect repellent. Pack an emergency kit: You may have some kit items already, such as a flashlight, a wind up radio, food, water and a manual can opener. Make sure they are organized and easy to find in case you need to evacuate your home. Make a kit to go in a backpack. Whatever you do, don't wait until a disaster is happening to make a kit. Check out how to put together an emergency kit. Keep food fresh: Chilling food properly is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of food borne illness. Leftovers should be chilled promptly, but remember to throw them away if they have been out at room temperature for more than two (2) hours. Keep the fridge at 4 C (40 F) or below and use an appliance thermometer to check the temperature. Check out these food safety tips for leftovers. Make a (safe) splash: Never leave a child unattended in water, not even for a second. Pick the best time of the day to swim and avoid swimming at night and in stormy weather. The Red Cross offers tips for all kinds of water activities such as water parks, backyard pools and hot tubs. Stay safe on the roads: Make sure your children are always buckled up properly while in the car, even for short trips. And remember, the back seat is always the safest place for your children. Connect with care: Don t mention going away on vacation in your social networking status updates.you may also want to delete messages from friends who mention these things to avoid the possibility of someone robbing your home while you re away. Avoid geotagging photos. Most smartphones and many digital cameras automatically attach the exact location where a photo was taken and when you share it online, the geotag can give away your address or let criminals know that you re on vacation, which could make your home a target for a break in.
