HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF DESIGN Richard W. Jennings, D.Des., FAIA Richard Jennings is a Lecturer in the Department of Architecture, Research Associate, and graduate student advisor at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. An architect by profession, he developed and teaches several courses at Harvard including Managing the Design Project, Integrated Project Delivery Approaches, and co-teaches Leading the Design Firm. He also teaches in the Challenges of Leadership Program and other courses at the Office of Executive Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Richard is a founding member and core team member of two Harvard research initiatives: The RMJM Program for Research and Education in Integrated Practice and The Zofnass Program for Infrastructure Sustainability Research. In his research roles, Richard is in involved in the planning, organizing and directing of the programs and supervises a number of graduate research assistants on approximately a number of research projects. A graduate with Distinction of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design where he earned both Doctor of Design (DDes) and Master in Design Studies with Distinction (MDesS) and was the recipient of the Dimitris Pikionas Award for Highest Academic Achievement. Richard also holds Master of Business Administration, (MBA), Master of Architecture, (MArch) and Bachelor of Science degrees. Jennings is also a Senior Consultant with the New York City investment banking firm Environmental Financial Consulting Group (EFCG) where he provides advisory services to professional firms in the areas of marketing and client relationships; general management and leadership; firm culture; mergers and acquisitions; management and business planning; integrated practice and integrated project delivery. He is currently advising several large A/E firms. In his professional practice, Jennings directed the design and construction of a significant number of large commercial office buildings, hotels, retail and master planned, mixed-use developments for such clients as Prudential Insurance Company, Hines Interests, Marriott Corp., The Federal Reserve Bank, Exxon, and other clients during his more than thirty five years of experience in the design, construction and development industry. At age 43 he was one of the youngest architects to be elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects for his contributions to the practice of architecture. He passed the seven-part, 36-hour NCARB Architectural Registration Examination in one sitting prior to graduating from college. He is licensed to practice architecture in a number of states including seismic regions, holds the NCARB certificate, and is licensed to practice real estate. He has developed real estate and served as fee developer for clients, advised on real estate development for national firms such as CB-Richard Ellis and Prudential Insurance Company, and served as a consultant to owner associations and negotiated concessions with real estate developers. Unique in his profession, Richard has applied principles from other industries and disciplines to the management and leadership of professional design firms. In addition to his professional education and training, he has formal training in statistics, organizational behavior, systems analysis, financial and managerial and industrial accounting, real estate finance, real estate appraisal, microeconomics and macroeconomics, operations management, portfolio management, general management, consumer analysis, competitive analysis, organizational culture, and marketing. Richard has started and led professional design firms and served in the roles of Chairman, President & CEO, Managing Principal, and Principal-in-Charge of large architecture and engineering firms and projects, including principal and director of a 700-person globally operating architecture, engineering and construction management firm and his own nationally-operating architecture and planning firm. He has served as a Management Counselor at the Small Business Administration assisting startup companies in strategic planning and preparation of business plans and as a consultant to various professional service and real estate firms. Richard has authored case studies and articles at Harvard University, lectured at conferences and seminars, and prior to Harvard, taught the NAAB-required professional practice course at the Rice University School of Architecture for four years.
