The Boone County Journal December 22, 2017 1 $12.99 per year online at www.boonecountyjournal.com FREE at over 200 locations in Boone County, Harvard, Marengo, Genoa, Kirkland and Cherry Valley Before it was a City of Murals By Sofi Zeman In the downtown area of Belvidere, a vast amount of the city s original architecture can still be found today. While facades have been altered and reconstruction has occurred, it s not too hard to find glimpses of our town s past just by taking a stroll on South State Street. In this week s Journal, both of the pictures are from the same area on South State but from different angles in approximately the same time period. Across from the Boone County Journal s office, now a parking lot, the street-scape was significantly different at the turn of the century. On the buildings bordering todays parking lot currently display three murals. While most can assume that The City of Murals has not always been known for its artwork, it seems odd to most to imagine it any other way than this today. Instead of the parking lot there were several buildings, with a series of shops and offices to the left. Today, those buildings are Donn Gustafson s State Farm Insurance and the Hub Barber Shop. By looking at the image below, you can make out a tall, three-across windowed building to the left. That building today currently has Belvidere s largest mural that was recently repainted by the artist John Berry, who started the mural movement in Northern Illinois in the 1970s. Three buildings to the right is a different building currently a Country Companies Agency. As Belvidere grew to become the city we now know, changes needed to be made. As a result, the two buildings in between these two were removed for the parking lot of today. The buildings that follow to the left of the tall building still remain today. It s interesting to look at images from an earlier time when Belvidere wasn t known for the culture of its murals. Over time, the meaning of towns begins to change. Today, seeing these murals makes Belvidere, Belvidere. Many grew up seeing and appreciating these works of art. But, there was a time when that wasn t the case. The culture of a town is an important aspect in how it operates. These murals recall forms of culture in the city of Belvidere as a development over time and are certainly noticeable. The artwork of this town is what makes it memorable to both visitors and residents in Belvidere. In its own way, the knocking down of those buildings benefited the community at the time they were removed, but with hindsight, we can see that they were and are still today very valuable Friday December 22, 2017 Vol. 22, Issue 35 No. 1127 All of this calls the future into question. What can we expect to see from Belvidere in the years to come? Progress has been a constant theme, but it s often difficult to see the extent of it when you re living during a particular period. Decades from now, people in Belvidere will begin to forget about the Burger King that was replaced with an auto parts store. They re not going to remember the new Casey s as a cornfield on the corner of Beloit and Business 20, just as they forgot about the two shops on State from the past. It s nice to see how far the town has come over the course of a century. But, the development that s going to make an impact on the future Belvidere is going on right now. Belvidere Cemetery to Make Improvements By Sofi Zeman Since 1847, Belvidere Cemetery has consistently and respectfully provided its services to the residents of this town when burying their loved ones. Today, the Cemetery specializes in cremation, burials, arrangements, monuments, memorials, and making these emotionally sensitive procedures more manageable. The cemetery prides itself in its services, along with a beautiful scenery and chapel. Though the rest of the facility is fully functional and well-kept, efforts are being made to improve the cemetery administration building during the coming year. With a 170-year old business, comes the need for updating. The office that stands today is a small, two room establishment with no doors to separate them, providing a minimal amount of privacy for visitors. Various issues relating to maintenance has also inconvenienced the business for some time. Looking to improve and increase productivity for the citizens of Belvidere, a new building will be put in the place of the current administration office. Another hope of this project is to make the cemetery itself seem even more appealing Continued on page 2

2 December 22, 2017 The Boone County Journal THE BOONE COUNTY JOURNAL real journalism for a real democracy Dear Santa, We hope the past year has been good for you and yours at the North Pole. You are probably experiencing firsthand the effects of climate change on this planet. Polar Bears coming to town foraging for food and all that. I m sure they ve had plenty of arguments with the reindeer. And speaking of which, there s a commercial on Toronto radio that reports you bought a Subaru all-wheel-drive vehicle. Blitzen and a few of the other reindeer got to talking and are worried you re thinking of replacing them. Maybe you could explain to them that the Subaru is for grocery runs to Sobeys, double-doubles at Tim Horton s drive-thru, and to pick up the mail from Canada Post. But for intercontinental travel, come on! How are you going to get to Noumea? And get from New Zealand the long way to Hawaii and Alaska in only 23 hours using a Subaru? There s no way DHL or UPS are going to airlift things for you at any kind of affordable rate. Please reassure the reindeer that they have some of the best job security in North America! You re a jolly, kind-hearted old soul, and it s good of you to keep this tradition going. So please permit us to make a few requests: Obviously, our first is for a world at peace with enough food and medicine for everyone. After that, there are a few things we need in Boone County. We could really use a couple of buses to get us affordably to O Hare and Chicago. As a world traveler, you, of all folks, realize how ridiculous it is that our public transportation system takes us to Timbuktu via Las Vegas instead of through O Hare. We need a decent restaurant. The Huddle is long gone. Driving to Beloit or Rockford gets old. Please see what you can do. And most of all, bring a box of library cards. Drop one in every Boone County stocking. Give Jeremy a personalized, gold one. By the way, Debbie Bloom, the Ida Public Library r Obituaries r --In Our Opinion-- Santa Claus North Pole, Canada H0H 0H0 Branom, Yvonne, 86, Belvidere, December 9 Kreiman, Michael, 57, Belvidere, December 11 Matschke, Kathleen, 61, Belvidere, November 20 Runyan, Daniel, 77, Kirkland, December 12 Whalen, Francis Dutch, 92, Belvidere, December 18 Woods, Mary, 75, Belvidere, December 15 director was at the Belvidere City Council meeting the other day, pointing out that the library building is getting older and needs some serious repairs. I ll vouch for Debbie Bloom, Santa. She was a nice girl this year, and she handed out hundreds of eclipse glasses so everyone could safely see the solar eclipse last August. Leave her a nice book to read. And how about having the elves build her a brand new library building--large enough to serve not only Belvidere--but everyone in Boone County, including Jeremy! And just up the road in Janesville, there is a naughty boy named Paul Ryan. With $11 million in his campaign treasury, he has proposed cutting food aid to needy children and medicine for the elderly. And he did so only a couple weeks before Christmas! Santa, I don t think Paul should be getting more economic articles from discredited economists and the deluxe copy of Ayn Rand s work that he has been coveting. Instead, bring him some of the writings of Charles Dickens, and for this socalled, practicing, good Roman Catholic, a nice Bible. Be sure to remember the folks in Washington, DC. Bring each of Donald Trump s family members a Make America Great Again cap filled with coal. As supporters of a bygone fuel, they are sure to enjoy this immensely. Put a bottle of Xanax on top in The Donald s cap, so he ll calm down and quit firing off those embarrassing tweets that spread ill will and can only cause harm. While you are there Santa, would you please give a few Washingtonians a ride in your sleigh? To a place where Donald Trump will find out what it s like to be a refugee, Jeff Sessions will learn what it s like to be Black, and Mike Pence (assuming he isn t) can experience what it s like to be gay and discriminated against by deeply religious Christians. If there was hope for Ebenezer Scrooge, perhaps there can be redemption for this bigoted trio as well. And Santa, if I may, a few personal items: How about a pair of ice skates? Size 9-1/2. Secondhand would be just fine. Speaking of Sobeys, could you pick up some golden syrup (light treacle)? Much cheaper and easier to come by up there or in the UK. While you re in England, if you pass a Waitrose or Sainsbury s, some lemon marmalade? Again, as you probably know, it s ordinary and inexpensive over there. Here it s ridiculously expensive, and, as Mrs. Claus will tell you, a lot of work to make, especially for a small batch. When you stop by, we ll spare you the milk and cookies. There s some cold cuts and lobster salad in the fridge. Help yourself to the liquor cabinet, and, by all means, drink some of the good stuff. It s Christmas, after all! Be thankful you have Blitzen and his buds and don t have to put up with the TSA. Using airplanes and a Subaru would never work! Thank you, Santa, for all you do. LARRY D. MOTACEK Born September 2, 1939- Passed Away December 3, 2017. Larry Motocek, 78, of Waco, Texas passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family. Larry was born in Belvidere, Illinois. Larry served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force as a ground radar control specialist. Larry retired from Greyhound bus lines after 24 years, and later, as a state of Texas corrections officer after 10 years. He also worked security at Mexia State School. Survivors include: First wife- Betty (nee Edwards) Conklin; Children- one daughter and 2 sons- Brenda (with Paul Johnson); Larry (with Lisa Motacek); Richard (with Diane Motacek). Current wife- Lillie (nee Austin) Motacek; Step-children- Maurice Patrick (with Elena Patrick); Byron Patrick (with Patty Patrick). Brother- Don; Sisters- Diane, Marykay, and Martina Ann and many grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Memorial service was at 11 AM Friday on December 8 at Connally Compton Funeral Directors, Waco, Texas. Burial will be next to his parents (James & Virginia Motacek) in L eau Qui Court Cemetery, Niobrara, Nebraska. Memorials may be made to the local Waco, Texas No kill animal shelter. Guest book at HYPERLINK http://www.wacotrib.com/ www.wacotrib.com Cemetery, Continued from page 1 and inviting to visitors. The new building will be similar to that of the cemetery chapel and follow the design as shown in the architect s design plan image. The chapel was designed in 1905 by Frank Lloyd Wright, a world famous architect at the turn of the century. It was the only cemetery structure he ever designed. The style of the new administration building will coordinate with the Prairie School style design, better fitting to the historical aspects of the cemetery. The cost for this project, however, exceeds the Cemetery Association budget significantly. It is for this reason, that a fundraiser to assist in paying for the cost of construction is expected to be held relatively soon. A set date for the fundraiser is yet to be determined. Donations to the Cemetery Association of Belvidere will also be accepted and appreciated. Anyone who makes a donation to the cause will be rewarded with a tax deductible as well. Making a payment to Belvidere Cemetery before the end of the tax year has the potential to be beneficial to many Belvidere citizens. In doing this, there is an existing opportunity to assist the community and gain additional tax benefits simultaneously. The Belvidere Cemetery can be contacted at (815) 547-7642 or belviderecemetery@comcast.net. They are open 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday and closed on weekends. Merry Christmas. Happy 2018. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: Rep. Adam Kinzinger has for the second time this year betrayed his constituents of the IL-16. Instead of voting for what is right for his district, he votes to please Donald Trump and Paul Ryan. Last May, Adam Kinzinger voted in favor of the House Republican health plan. This plan was so terrible, the Senate did not consider it and eventually developed several versions of its own. This plan would have repealed major parts of Obama s health law capping future funding for Medicaid and cutting tax increases for high-income families, health insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies. The bill included nearly $1 trillion in tax cuts over the next decade, most of which would have gone to the very wealthy. People making more than $1 million per year would have received tax cuts of more than $51,000 according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. This bill would have resulted in 24 million people losing their healthcare insurance coverage and those that would still have their coverage would find their premiums increase by 15%-20% according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Despite this bill not being in the best interest of his constituents, he voted for it anyway. Recently, Adam Kinzinger voted in favor of the GOP tax plan. This plan will hurt the middle-class families of the 16 th District but once again he votes party line with Trump and Ryan. Rep. Kinzinger has claimed that cutting taxes of the wealthiest 1% and US corporations will create new jobs. That is not true. The Presidents and CEOs of the largest companies have reported they will use those tax savings, not for job creation, but instead to pay out more in stock dividends. This plan increases the standard deduction but eliminates several itemized deductions used by the middle-class such as student loans but retains the private school tuition deduction used by the wealthiest. This tax plan introduces a new tax deduction for those owning their own private jet and it allows the wealthiest to keep more of their money by eliminating the inheritance tax. Finally, this tax plan will increase the national debt by $1.5 trillion that will be paid for by the middle-class, not the wealthiest 1% (whose wealth often resides offshore). Rep. Kinzinger takes no initiative and simply does not care about the middle-class or his constituents, he only wants to impress Trump and Ryan. He goes out of his way to avoid interaction with the public. He has held only one town hall meeting in several years and would only take questions submitted prior to the meeting. Also, he gave a 10-minute meaningless speech at a recent Republican Steak Fry this past Fall and left immediately after. Such behavior demonstrates an elitist attitude. In 2018, we have a chance to replace Rep. Kinzinger with someone that understands and will represent the middle-class working families of the 16 th District. Let s vote him out and vote in someone that will listen and take some initiative to get things done. Wayne Borchardt Interested in Boone County?
